Anti-Intellectualism: Why is it Dangerous?

My name is Claire and I’m currently a sophomore in highschool who is exponentially concerned with the rise of anti-intellectualism within the United States. More specifically, within our very own public education system.

Anti-intellectualism can be defined as the general opposition towards, distrust, and/or denial of intellectual practices and pursuits. However, why is it dangerous? It’s important that it is first understood what intellectual practices and pursuits are. An intellectual practice or pursuit can be defined as any and all things that require logic, reasoning, and research. This definition encompasses STEAM, which stands for “Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics”, literature, philosophy, etc.

The blatant denial of science and the banning of literature is ever growing. According to PEN America, there were approximately 10,046 titles that were banned from public schools within the 2023-2024 school year. Examples include but are not limited to: •“The Handmaids Tale” Authored by Margaret Atwood. This book was banned due its depiction of sexual violence, critique of religious extremism, and its feminist themes. •”The Holy Bible(King James Version)” This book was banned because of concerns about it being suitable for younger audiences. •”1984” Authored by George Orwell. This book was banned because of its portrayal of a totalitarian government, depictions of censorship, explicit sexual content, and ‘pro communist content’ •”Fahrenheit 451” Authored by Ray Bradbury. This book was banned due its criticism of censorship, using God’s name in vain, and profanity.

A common theme you may notice in most of these books is the critique of totalitarianism and fascism. These books being banned is clearly censoring these critiques from minors in schools.

Another book that has been banned is “Night” which is a Holocaust memoir authored by Elie Wiesel. It’s been banned in school districts due to concerns about it being too graphic to be taught in public schools.

This banning of books may as well function as the banning of knowledge and differing opinions. In books of literary merit, many people find that those books provoke new thoughts, awarenesses, and systems of thinking. This is similar to the censorship and denial of scientific fact.

Anti-intellectualism is so inexcusably rampant that it provokes dangerous denialism from top government officials. Entities such as the CDC, FDA, and WHO have been long-time supporters of vaccines and vaccine mandates. According to the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases, “Since 1924 childhood vaccinations have prevented more than 100 million cases of serious disease”. In contrast to these facts, top government officials such as Donald Trump or Robert F. Kennedy jr., have expressed their distrust (a common theme in anti-intellectualism) in the science behind vaccines. When asked during a press conference in a Mar-a-Lago, President Trump stated “I don’t like mandates, I’ve not a big mandate person” when asked about whether or not schools should mandate vaccines. Secretary Robert F. Kennedy jr. is a known critic and skeptic of vaccines. During his confirmation hearing, RFK jr repeatedly asked to see the science behind vaccines. When presented with the facts, he was nothing short of dismissive.

With evidence of anti-intellectualism being on the rise within our public policy, it begs the question of what is the point of trying to stop it? Why is anti-intellectualism dangerous?

The danger of anti-intellectualism is that it leads to willful ignorance because so many people fear knowing what they do not. Willful ignorance may be more impactful than knowledge, for it is more reckless. When we ignore science and censor things we don’t agree with it is impossible to move forward. When we dabble in things we refuse to understand, it turns into a mosaic of our own design that we cannot decipher the meaning of. Intellectualism, which is inherently tied to intellectual pursuits, has lead to groundbreaking inventions like the lightbulb, wifi, the Schaffer Paragraph, steam engines, and so much more. This alone is evidence that anti-intellectualism will, undoubtedly, slow us down. That is the danger of anti-intellectualism.

Education Department Launches online anti-DEI portal

https://enddei.ed.gov/

So here is a website the Fed just created to “report” schools for DEI practices. I hope they understand this works both ways. Please encourage any student that experiences discrimination in schools including private religious schools to use this tool. Also please share with trolls so they can flood it with complaints LOL- I’m sure they will confuse whatever AI program that is process I bc these complaints because you know the government does not have the staff or the capacity to actually process this information.

Backstory with advice needed.

Growing up, my biological father didn't want me to be labeled with a learning disability, which made things challenging. Thankfully, my grandma encouraged my mom to have me tested, as I was struggling to keep up with my peers. I believe my difficulties stemmed from a mix of ADHD and a lack of support at home there wasn’t much practice with numbers or letters, and we moved around a lot, which didn't help.

When I finally got to a school that genuinely cared for me, I was pushed back a grade. My IEP teacher was incredible; she truly loved being an educator and put in so much effort to help me read and understand math. For the first time, I was making progress and I loved school! This woman made me feel loved. I'm tearing up thinking about it. I'm an adult and still remember her.

However, we moved again in 4th grade, and the new school didn’t provide the same level of support. My mom wasn’t encouraging me to focus on my studies, and I didn’t put in much effort either. This pattern continued throughout my education, with more moves and a lack of consistent support. My new IEP teacher was frustrated with me for not doing homework, but she didn’t take much action to help.

It wasn’t until 8th grade, when we finally settled in one place, that I had another caring teacher. Despite a rough home life my parents fought a lot, and I felt neglected compared to my siblings. They all had the same dad but not me and felt obvious constantly reminded. My step dad was also a creep and no one believed me. Anyways, I made progress that year. Just having someone believe in me made a huge difference. Unfortunately this IEP teacher wouldn't be able to follow me to high school.

In high school, I didn’t talk about my home life, and I pretended everything was perfect. I graduated in 2018, even though I didn’t put in much effort. Now, as an adult, I’ve started working and skipped college, feeling like I wasn’t smart enough due to my toxic upbringing.

Meeting my husband changed everything. I'm ashamed of this but wanting to get out of that toxic house and knowing I needed money I went after him for financial security. However I've fallen so much in love with this man. He’s shown me what real love looks like and helped me realize that I’m not stupid. I can learn and grow. However, I still struggle with math and want to go back to school, but I’m unsure how to tackle this challenge. Like will it even be possible? I wouldn't even be surprised if I don't even have a high school comprehension of math. I read and write just fine but math is not good.

I'm very interested in becoming a teacher myself, especially because everything I went through has made me stronger. I'm also more aware that some kids could be going through terrible situations, and my impact could be incredibly important for them.

Also p.s To all the teachers out there your impact is life changing . The struggling kid who seems disinterested may need you more than you realize. Please don’t give up on us.

Why can't box tops automatically go to schools?

I don't understand why I have to do additional work to help out. I already paid for the product and now I have to worry about submitting it. Why not automatically distribute to schools in the area where it was purchased? I'm sure that a large majority of eligible shoppers likely don't participate.
I understand the argument of mistrust & that would be my only reason against such a system. However thinking about how much money is being withheld from schools is sad.
A school is limited to $20,000 in box top funds per year, that's 2000 box tops. I'm sure that is surpassed many times... Thanks for any inputs!

How important is school district ranking?

When I was a student in K-12 education (I assume that’s the term to refer to kindergarten to 12th grade), the 2 times I moved (K-5th grade, 6th-8th grade, 9th-12th grade) it seemed school district ranking didn’t matter. All 3 districts were underfunded and overcrowded. It seemed to me there was the smart group of kids that excelled regardless of their school education and the group of kids that always did badly regardless of their school education. It came off to me that school district ranking was just about the ratio of overachievers to underachievers. I had several valedictorians I knew, they all had the same GPA of about 4.2/4.0. But anecdotes are not evidence. So I want to know how much school district rankings do matter?

"alternative" behavioral schools schools - what the h*ll?

Er, hi. I went to an alternative school. That is to say--not specifically special education alone, but focused on both neurodivergent or delinquent students. Here's the thing: these schools are a nightmare.
Not in a flashy, abusive way.
But in the way that there's thousands if not millions of students being pushed through them every year, but they exist primarily as a means to shuffle kids out of the way of the "real" schools and limit their futures rather than educate. Every year that goes by I realize how drastically my life was affected growing up in these--no real expectation I would or could ever attend college or learn a trade. It was like a holding pen for kids that don't fit in.
Frankly it's been 10 years and I still think about it every day. It's a horrific liminal space where kids futures go to die, but that's not what bothers me.
What bothers me is I've never met someone who went to one that I don't personally already know. What bothers me is I've literally never heard a single person talk about what these schools are doing. What bothers me is they never seem to face any consequences for their complete neglect of their students and their students outcomes. The schools are *bureaucratically designed for this.* They regularly change locations, names, or structure. No alumni, no reunions, nobody tracking what happens to the students after they get out.
The teachers themselves are actually fine, usually. Some of the best people I've ever known, when they actually stick around--the turnover rate is huge.
I don't...know what to do about it? This problem feels too big, and too invisible to most of the world, for me to bring any awareness to it on my own. But I've never seen a single other person talk about it. Millions of kids with their prospects dwindling by the minute and all I can do is sit here and say "that's rough buddy, been there too."
I've never even seen this category of schools mentioned in *fiction,* let alone real life.
Has anyone else even heard of these? Was my childhood even real? Maybe some of the schools are fine and I had bad luck, but I've been to 4, and they were all nightmares.

edit--awkward double word in title, what?

Do we need a massive overhaul of our education system?

I feel like we are still running basically the same system, even though we have learned so much about behavior and psychology since public education began. Developmentally, kids struggle with sitting in a classroom all day, watching videos, doing repetitive tasks, and listening to lectures. Those who are more concerned with meeting expectations work hard to memorize information, take a test, but because of their age they quickly forget what they learned.

Humans learn best when they are interested in a topic and can explore it in engaging ways. Teachers don’t become educators because they love the idea of filling kids' heads with information they will likely forget. Should districts ditch the current model and shift to more project-based learning, where students use core subjects to solve real-world problems rather than simply memorizing facts? Are educators interested in teaching in a way that is fun and engaging—so long as they are given the support and resources to do so?

Can I Reappear for JKBOSE Exams After Failing in 2023?

Hi, I was a student of class 11th in JKBOSE in 2023 but failed in 3 subjects. I tried to reappear privately once but didn’t continue after that. Now in 2025, I want to take the exam again.

Is there any issue I might face while reappearing? Can I still register and clear my exams? Any guidance on the process would be really helpful.

Thanks in advance!

Channel ID Ranges & Recommendations for Educational YouTube Channels

Greetings, fellow r/education community!

Table of contets

  1. Overview of My Project
  2. Core Database Tables
  3. Current Status and API Implementation
  4. Questions and Channel ID Suggestions

1. Overview of My Project

I'm developing a database model for a centralized resource management system within a competence-level-based education framework. This system is designed to track individual learning progress across various subjects (e.g. Mathematics, Biology, Technology, Languages), farther split into 1 "General" Topic each and various "Specialization" Topics that build upon those "General Subjects".

If you're curious and want to take a closer look onto the edicational system I've crafted: Level system for school subjects (Google Sheets)

Each Topic is divided into Levels that define specific competencies and prerequisites. In parallel, a centralized teaching resource repository stores resources (e.g., teaching videos, documents) that are linked to one or more Topic-Levels. Resources have versions and support multiple languages.

Ultimately, the system integrates user data, school information, and even job competencies to provide a comprehensive, globally accessible educational platform.

2. Core Database Tables

tbl_topic: Contains all subjects (e.g., General Mathematics, Analysis, Algebra, English).

tbl_topic_level: Defines the competence levels within each Topic (e.g., MAT0 Level 1, Algebra Level 6).

tbl_resource: Stores teaching resources, each having at least one version (tbl_version) and one language version (tbl_lang_version).

ctbl_resource_to_level: A many-to-many table linking resources to relevant Topic-Levels (e.g., an AI resource may be linked to both Artificial Intelligence Level 4 and Computational Linguistics Level 5).

tbl_source & tbl_source_author: Manage external sources (such as YouTube videos) that can be referenced by resources.

3. Current Status and API Implementation

I’m currently populating the database with sample data, focusing on tbl_source with educational (mostly scientific) YouTube videos.
Why YouTube Videos?
They can serve as standalone teaching resources with minimal versions (often one language), allowing me to automatically populate several tables simultaneously. Over the past three days, I’ve developed an API that processes a YouTube URL to:

  • Retrieve the video’s transcript.
  • Generate a concise, formal scientific abstract from the transcript and video description (using Vertex AI).
  • Create a CSV row (for tbl_source) with all relevant data.

tbl_source Fields: sourceID,source_typeID,source_URL,sauthorID,source_title,description,created,updated

So far, I've generated 916 entries for tbl_source and expect the number to grow into the thousands. Here are a couple of examples:

1. Row Example ("random" row 420):
31021,1,https://youtu.be/eu6i7WJeinw,31,"Cross products | Chapter 10, Essence of linear algebra", "This video provides an introductory overview of the cross product of two vectors. It leverages linear algebra, specifically determinants, to calculate the cross product's magnitude as the area of the parallelogram formed by the two input vectors. The sign of the result reflects the vectors' orientation, determined by the right-hand rule. The cross product itself is a vector perpendicular to the plane spanned by the inputs, with a length equal to the parallelogram area. A deeper exploration is promised in a subsequent video.",2016-09-01T03:54:15Z,2016-09-01T03:54:15Z

2. Row Example ("random" row 69):
42067,1,https://youtu.be/Jip3BbZBpsM,42,"What Causes The Phases Of The Moon?", "This video explains lunar phases using a model of the sun, Earth, and moon. The moon’s phases are due to Earth’s shadow and our changing perspective. A lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes into Earth’s shadow, appearing reddish due to atmospheric refraction and scattering of light, with dimming effects from dust. Spectroscopic analysis of eclipsed exoplanets may reveal atmospheric composition, potentially indicating life.",2011-12-12T18:33:33Z,2011-12-12T18:33:33Z

4. My Questions and what I've come up with so far

Every Source always has (...at least...) 1 Source Author
while every Source has a sourceID and every Source Author has a sauthorID

yesterday, I had the idea that it would be neat to reserve specific ID (ranges) for certain YouTube Channels based on Numbers related to them.

The following is the List of ✅ Channels already covered, ☑ Channels on my TO-DO list,
with sauthorIDs and starting sourceIDs I've thought of so far (empty = no idea so far):

Status Channel sauthorID starting sourceID
Veritasium 42 42000
3blue1brown 31 31000
Steve Mould
Vsauce 1 10000 or 100000
Vsauce2 2 20000 or 200000
Stand-up Maths 314 314159
Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell 12 12013
CGP Grey
MinutePhysics
Physics Girl
Numberphile
SmarterEveryDay
SciShow

Now to my QUESTIONS:

1a. What do you think about these ID suggestions so far?
1b. What are your suggestions for neat sauthorIDs and starting sourceIDs, especially for new channels?

2a. Do you have any recommendations for educational YouTube channels or specific videos that I haven’t added yet but should definitely cover?
2b. Additionally, what ID ranges would you assign to these new channels?

Thank you in advance for your feedback and recommendations. I'm excited to refine my database model further based on your insights!

Northwestern Illinois Association Special Education Data Breach

A leaked archive of internal data has revealed that the Northwestern Illinois Association (NIA), a regional special education cooperative, has experienced a data breach. The organization serves seventy-two school districts across ten counties in Illinois.

NOTE: We are sharing this information to raise awareness and encourage individuals and organizations to prioritize cybersecurity. Our goal is to help others understand the growing threat of ransomware and the importance of proactive security measures.

With its headquarters in Sycamore, Illinois, the NIA provides specialized services for children with low-incidence impairments, including hearing, vision, and orthopedic disabilities. The organization operates satellite offices within three regional sub-divisions and collaborates with fourteen special education districts and twenty nonpublic agencies.

The archive, obtained by a hacker group known as CICADA3301, reportedly contains 50 GB of files. The exact contents of the breach have not been disclosed, but the exposure of sensitive information has raised concerns about the privacy of students, staff, and partner organizations.

Ransomware attacks are on the rise: The number of ransomware attacks hit a record high in 2023, and the trend continued in 2024 despite law enforcement disruptions.

New ransomware groups emerge quickly: Groups like RansomHub and Qilin replaced older, disrupted groups like LockBit, demonstrating the resilience of ransomware as a threat.

Double extortion is now standard: Most ransomware attacks involve stealing and encrypting data, increasing pressure on victims to pay ransoms.

Attackers exploit known vulnerabilities: Vulnerabilities like Zerologon and CitrixBleed remain popular entry points, highlighting the need for up-to-date security patches.

What’s your favorite educational YouTube channel for young kids?

Hey everyone!

I’m looking for fun and educational YouTube channels for kids around the early school years (ages 4–8). Something that keeps them engaged while actually teaching them cool stuff about the world—science, nature, history, or even everyday life skills.

Do you have any favorites that your kids love?

I recently came across Little Explorers Universe, and it does a great job of explaining everyday topics in a simple, engaging way. Curious to hear what other channels you’d recommend

School looking for videoconferencing partners

Hello fellow teachers,

Ever wondered what it would be like to be in China?

Hi! we’re a Senior High School (ages 15-18) in China. I’m reaching out to any schools who might want to do a cultural exchange videoconference with us. We’re looking to learn more about the world (and hope that the world might want to learn about us).

The usual format of our videoconference is about 45-60 minutes long. During which, our kids from each side will give a small presentation, followed by a Q & A session, followed by each side doing a small demonstration (we will teach your kids Kung-Fu), followed by a live game (the “Guess Who” game).

After the videoconference, we hope to do a small package exchange whereby we will exchange small-value items like photos, magazines, train-tickets, stamps, etc. We can also follow that up with a pen-pal project.

Needless to say, we do not charge anything for this project.

We normally connect via Microsoft Teams (as Facebook, whatsapp, etc. is banned in China).

Do message me directly and we’ll set something up! I look forward to seeing you soon!

Kids really need to be taught to think critically and how to properly research and discern information: 6th grader believes Hitler killed Jews for being “fake Jews.”

TLDR: 6th grader I know believes Hitler killed the Jews because they were fronting as fake Jews due to not being black. It makes me wonder how we can teach kids how to figure out truth from fiction without having pushback from groups politicizing the issue, since even the Associated Press is now being dubbed with the “legacy media” coin.

While I am pursuing my Masters in Data Science, I am a single parent who works as a crossing guard for my city. It’s actually great pay for the time I spend and I like to help kids, especially teenagers. It’s also my main/unwritten role to be their mentor.

So, yes, I have bonded with some of them. In particular, a sixth grader who walks to school spends a lot of time talking to me. The other day he asked me if I knew that the original Jewish people were black. I said yes, as I do understand that the original Israelites were of a darker skin tone. I think it is disputed whether they were all dark and also the range this took on - were the majority a tan/modern middle eastern color or were they more sub-Saharan African appearing? So, that’s why I say I understand it to be true, but I don’t want to make guesses about their exact phenotype.

He then said, “that’s why Hitler killed the Jews, it was because they were ‘fake Jews.’”

Don’t worry, I corrected him. But it’s just a deep sigh with this one. He did not mean to be anti-Semitic; so please throw that variable out with this one. He’s a nice, urban black boy who apparently has a homeroom teacher who voted for Trump. But who knows where he got this information- he said he’s only allowed on YouTube and no other socials.

But what do we do with this? I know that my education taught me exactly how to really research things and verify them. It taught me how to discern truth and critically think. But it seems that most of this learning how to research and discern and critically think for oneself is now absent from school systems.

How do we get schools to teach our children to know truth from falsehood if everything turns into something political? If I would suggest that we teach them how to verify information they see online and general critical thinking skills; at least the former, if not both suggestions, would be politicized by some with comments about “the legacy media.”

Any ideas?

What are good degrees I could pursue in this market with my background?

I’m a veteran, with 6 years of military experience as a weather forecaster. I have these degrees already:

AS and BS: Meteorology

BA: Interdisciplinary - Environmental Sciences Concentration

I have had zero luck getting a private sector job in meteorology or environmental. With the government axing the National weather service and EPA, it seems even more dismal.

I have 10 months of GI bill remaining to pay for school, and I may be able to reinstate up to 36 months because of employment difficulties.

What Bachelor’s/Master’s degrees have a chance to pay decently and be employable in the age of AI and cutting of federal work?

I considered computer science, but it seems many of my peers in that field are also struggling with layoffs, and the market has become over-saturated.

Reneged Shot at District COO

I have worked in facilities for a school district for the last 20 years.

Recently, our facilities director retired and the decision was made to replace him with a COO that would oversee facilities, transportation, and food services.

Our HR director informed me that we would be using a national search firm to post the position, but they would "definitely be open to interviewing internal candidates." He sent me a link to the job posting, and encouraged me to apply.

I applied, with letters of recommendation from a district executive, a principal in good standing, a VP from a private college, and a director from our district tech department.

I did a first round interview, and it went wonderfully.

Of the 50 or so people who were initially interviewed, according to the gentleman I interviewed with, 10 would be passed for a second interview.

When those 10 were passed on to the district, I was mentioned specifically. This is according to our HR director.

Despite this fact, the HR director informed me that they would actually not be interviewing internal candidates after all.

I've talked about this with a number of colleagues, and confusion seems to be the standard response, with a slight touch of outrage. Trades people, custodians, bus drivers, principles and administrators, coordinators, and teachers. It's safe to say, without being accused of hyperbole, everyone was taken aback by this.

Our former facilities director left somewhat of a toxic environment behind, with middle management that relies on micromanaging, surveillance, and harassment. It is a hostile work environment in many respects, and requires a top down culture change. Someone new, would come in none the wiser, and would be receiving progress reports from the toxic individuals themselves.

Because I do have it in writing that they would consider internal applicants, do I have any recourse on this decision?

I just don't know where to go from here. I am open to any and all advice.

Would I make a good lawyer/ is law right for me?

Hi,

My original plan was to become a psychologist, but I’ve realized that I don’t actually want to work as one. However, I still find psychology as a field fascinating. So far, I’ve taken a course in project management, and I’m currently taking an introductory law course and a course in social psychology.

I volunteer a lot. I’m a board member of RFSL Youth (the Swedish Federation for LGBTQI rights), a sex educator for RFSU (the Swedish Association for Sexuality Education), and a volunteer for BRIS (Children’s Rights in Society). I want my career to revolve around children’s rights, but I also don’t want to do the same thing all the time—I crave variety!

My mother describes me as curious and solution-oriented, which I agree with. I also have no problem coming up with ideas, partly thanks to my ADHD. In group settings, I tend to be the one making sure the group finishes tasks on time. I can be quite the talker, but I know when to be quiet. Naturally, I have no problem with public speaking—most people describe me as a great communicator. Today, my professor told me he appreciated my ability to cut through ambiguity and express things clearly and concisely.

TL;DR: I’m a curious, solution-oriented volunteer who cares about children’s rights and SRHR, with a need for variety. Based on my skills and interests, do you think law is a good fit for me? (Important sidenote: I'm swedish)

Why did they pass me with such a low GPA

I graduated with a 1.7 GPA. I wish they would have failed me so I could have more time to catch up. I moved to different areas of Virginia in the foster system during my schooling years and had many different school changes until settling down in my high school years. I wouldn't do homework and I rarely studied for tests.

How did I even graduate? I fell through the cracks for sure.

Trumps Letter (End Racial Preference)

Here’s a copy of what was sent from the Trump administration to educational institutions receiving federal funds.

U.S. Department of Education Directs Schools to End Racial Preferences

The U.S. Department of Education has sent a Dear Colleague Letter to educational institutions receiving federal funds notifying them that they must cease using race preferences and stereotypes as a factor in their admissions, hiring, promotion, compensation, scholarships, prizes, administrative support, sanctions, discipline, and beyond.

Institutions that fail to comply may, consistent with applicable law, face investigation and loss of federal funding. The Department will begin assessing compliance beginning no later than 14 days from issuance of the letter.

“With this guidance, the Trump Administration is directing schools to end the use of racial preferences and race stereotypes in their programs and activities—a victory for justice, civil rights laws, and the Constitution,” said Acting Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Craig Trainor. “For decades, schools have been operating on the pretext that selecting students for ‘diversity’ or similar euphemisms is not selecting them based on race. No longer. Students should be assessed according to merit, accomplishment, and character—not prejudged by the color of their skin. The Office for Civil Rights will enforce that commitment.”

In Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard, the U.S. Supreme Court not only ended racial preferences in school admissions, but articulated a general legal principle on the law of race, color, and national origin discrimination—namely, where an educational institution treats a person of one race differently than it treats another, and race is a factor in the different treatment, the educational institution has violated the law. By allowing this principle to guide vigorous enforcement efforts, the Trump Education Department will ensure that America’s educational institutions will again embrace merit, equality of opportunity, and academic and professional excellence.

The letter calls upon all educational institutions to cease illegal use of race in:

Admissions: The Dear Colleague Letter clarifies the legal framework established by the Supreme Court in Students v. Harvard; closes legal loopholes that colleges, universities, and other educational institutions with selective enrollment have been exploiting to continue taking race into account in admissions; and announces the Department’s intention to enforce the law to the utmost degree. Schools that fail to comply risk losing access to federal funds. Hiring, Compensation, Promotion, Scholarships, Prizes, Sanctions, and Discipline: Schools, including elementary, middle, and high schools, may no longer make decisions or operate programs based on race or race stereotypes in any of these categories or they risk losing access to federal funds. The DEI regime at educational entities has been accompanied by widespread censorship to establish a repressive viewpoint monoculture on our campuses and in our schools. This has taken many forms, including deplatforming speakers who articulate a competing view, using DEI offices and “bias response teams” to investigate those who object to a school’s racial ideology, and compelling speech in the form of “diversity statements” and other loyalty tests. Ending the use of race preferences and race stereotyping in our schools is therefore also an important first step toward restoring norms of free inquiry and truth-seeking.

Anyone who believes that a covered entity has violated these legal rules may file a complaint with the Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights. Information about filing a complaint with OCR is available at How to File a Discrimination Complaint with the Office for Civil Rights on the OCR website.

Background

The Supreme Court ruled in June 2023 in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard that Harvard’s and the University of North Carolina’s use of racial considerations in admissions, which the universities justified on “diversity” and “representativeness” grounds, in fact operated to illegally discriminate against white and Asian applicants and racially stereotype all applicants. The Universities “concluded, wrongly, that the touchstone of an individual’s identity is not challenges bested, skills built, or lessons learned but the color of their skin. Our constitutional history does not tolerate that choice,” for “[t]he entire point of the Equal Protection Clause” is that “treating someone differently because of their skin color is not like treating them differently because they are from a city or from a suburb, or because they play the violin poorly or well.” Rather, “an individual’s race may never be used against him in the admissions process” and, in particular, “may not operate as a stereotype” in evaluating individual admissions candidates.

Does a purely STEM-focused education creates moral indifference in scientists, as seen in the development of the atomic bomb?

I know there’s a lot more to the history of the atomic bomb, especially in terms of politics, global conflict, and military strategy, but for me, it’s hard to understand how something so destructive could ever be justified. I’ve never really had a "science-type" brain, but I’ve been thinking a lot about how STEM education focuses primarily on technical skills, often without much attention to the humanities or ethics.

Take Oppenheimer, for example—he seemed to have this intense thirst for discovery, but all for what? Ultimately, it led to global instability and the threat of nuclear war. It seems like the focus on the scientific achievement overshadowed the devastating consequences of that achievement.

Do you think that scientists who focus solely on STEM subjects might become detached from the broader human implications of their work? In the case of the atomic bomb, for example, many of the scientists involved were focused on the technical challenges and the “necessity” of developing it during wartime. But does this narrow focus, or lack of emphasis on ethical reasoning, lead to a kind of moral indifference? Could it create a "bubble" where the ends justify the means, and the consequences of their inventions are overlooked?

This might also relate to the absolute separation we often see between STEM and humanities education, when in reality, everything is interconnected. The more we separate these areas of study, the more we risk overlooking the moral and societal implications of technological advances.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on whether the integration (or lack thereof) of humanities in STEM education plays a role in shaping the moral compass of scientists, both historically and today.

Can you also suggest topics for our research, I think the focus would be 'ideology' since that's our topic in general subject. (the supposed research is only 2k words)

What makes a good first grade experience? More time outdoors and hands-on, or more order and studying with books?

Which of these is more in line with 6 year olds' needs and development, according to current research or your experience?

(1) School A: Kids spend part of the day working in a garden or caring for farm animals, another part in swim class and folkloric dance class. The academic part is in 2 languages with good quality books, but it's less demanding. The kids seem medium organized, like not chaotic but also not super obedient. 2 teachers for 20 kids. Parents' comments here are that their kid is happy but some think they are not advancing fast enough academically.

(2) School B: It's more orderly, there is more focus on academics and the method is pretty traditional (desks in rows, books, workbooks, an occasional triptych). Also in 2 languages with the same books. They do have art, music, and PE, but there is less outdoor space to roam around in. 1 teacher for 20 kids. The school seems very organized. Parents' comments here are that they think the academic level is better than other schools, but some of the tasks may be boring.

Since we live in a country with poor academics overall, I am nervous to have my child attend a more relaxed school. At the same time I know small kids learn a lot by doing and being outdoors and happiness is very important of course! My son is a naturally curious kid (like most!) who has done well with with the routine at his traditional PreK, but at the moment is very bored copying out sentences.

Niche schools to cater to divorced homes and snowbirds. Could a network like this ever be set up?

This is far fetched but I can dream of something like this. Possibly in the future it could work.

Essentially my nephew is living in Las Vegas for better economics and to be near his parents.

His daughter only gets to come out during holidays and occasional weekends.

This is sad because girls need their Dads. It would be nice if she could be enrolled in two schools.

We know another young kid in town that splits his time between Texas and Utah. I think they enroll and unenroll every three months switching off.

I just thought a school track network could be set up to accommodate custody disputes.

Yes it would be hard for the kid to go back and forth, but it's also hard to miss a parent and not see them the majority of the time.

I also thought of snowbird parents in the colder states getting to match schooling in the warmer states. Like a coordinated effort.

We have a local high-school that is out in the winter so kids can become Olympians and they have to attend in the summer.

I am a soon to be teacher and consequently I’ve been trying to choose a specific educational philosophy that aligns the best with me, however, as I was revising all of those concepts, I started to question to what degree do the educational philosophies of progressivism and perennialism shape current education practices in the US with the current situation over there or how has it been in the past few years depending on the state, i.e red and blue states.

P.S. I am not american, nor do i live in a country with a similar educational/political structure.

What’s the hardest part about IT budgeting in schools?

IT budgeting in schools is a constant balancing act—stretching limited funds while keeping up with ever-changing technology needs. Schools have to prioritize between upgrading old hardware, maintaining software licenses, improving cybersecurity, and ensuring students and staff have access to the right tools.

What’s been your experience with IT budgeting in education? Are there any creative ways your school has made the most of a tight budget?

Easy, DOGE. IES matters.

In an essay for the Flypaper blog at the Fordham Institute, Chester E. Finn, Jr. argues that DOGE cost-cutting efforts shouldn't "slash and burn" the Institute of Education Sciences within the US Department of Education. Finn notes how this research organization traces its roots to the very beginning of the first DoE in 1867; it "is responsible for the oldest and most fundamental of all federal activities bearing on 'the cause of education throughout the country.'” Finn argues that while there is potential for worthwhile reform within IES, getting rid of the organization would be harmful to education research in the US. "DOGE, if it actually sought the 'government efficiency' in its name, could help modernize IES, perhaps even put out to pasture some sacred cows, such as the regional labs." Finn writes. "But slashing and burning, as happened the other day, won’t improve matters. It’s just going to weaken the foremost truth squad in American education, the chief sponsor and funder of rigorous analysis, reliable data, and clear-eyed evaluations in a realm that needs more of those things, not less."

Research Question

I'm potentially doing some large-scale research with elementary students. Unfortunately, I most likely cannot make it to proctor all of my testing (e.i. watch students work). Students would be actually just observed by their teacher. If I made the teacher sign something at the end of the experiment indicating a lack of distractions and all-around smooth experiment would my absense be fine? Or, rather, is it frowned upon in academia if I were not present for the testing?

Thanks

Will I have a lower chance of being accepted into uni because I go to an alternative HS?

In 11th grade I struggled w my mental health a lot (and still do) so I stopped attending classes which caused my grades to drop. My grade coordinator recommended I go to an alternative school cuz I was in risk of not graduating and i agreed to it.

Since then I’ve decided I want to go to university so I can actually get a well paying job eventually, but I’m scared that the fact that I go to an alternative school and am taking another semester(or year) of hs will significantly decrease my chances of acceptance.

I was wondering if anyone has any experience w this or had any trouble getting into uni because of going to an alternative school or taking another year of highschool.

Edit: BTW the courses I was failing were dropped so won’t be shown on my transcript when applying to Uni

Your take on the DoE?

I am a foreigner who is encountering an increasingly large amount of news about the United States’ Department of Education. What is your take on it potentially getting shut down?

I’m aware it has been talked about for ages, off and on, and people are fired up over this issue, but there’s not much debate with reasoned arguments either way that is recent, that I’ve seen.

Here are my main questions:

What was the original purpose of the Department of Education, and how much has that deviated since its inception?

To what extent is the department of education successful (or unsuccessful) in its purpose, whatever that may be, and why? Was it always this way?

If it’s unsuccessful, what could be done to improve it?

If it’s successful, what are the primary motivations for its removal?

I’d like to dig under the surface and get your opinions.

I imagine this issue has frequently been a hot topic for this sub and adjacent, so if you have any insightful references don’t hesitate to link them.

Apologies in advance for my ignorance, I am starting from nearly zero in this foreign issue.

DEI, integrating schools and 2-way busing has been shown over and over NOT to not make a difference. Berkeley, California was the first school district to be fully integrated - Failed. It failed twice at same school in NY 50 years apart. Failed at my school. What about where you went to school?

Berkeley, California was the first school;l system to be fully integrated in the US. Here are the findings after 50 years. While this was a dream and the words of Martin Luther King, it hasn’t worked.

In New York in the 1960s a new school was being built with integration in mind, it failed. Then at the same school 50 years latter integration was tried again, and failed. Here’s the story, “Nice White Parents”.

For context, in Malaysia, I can choose between a two/three options on how I want to pursue my Masters. Either via coursework (exams, mini project etc) or by research (self-learning, no exams). Is it the same in the US?

Additional question: how does graduate assistantships work? How competitive is it?

I’m a student I have an issue with a student at another school.

I’m not gonna go into specifics but I’ll sum it up, I met another student and 2 others in middle school this student we’ll call A. Me and A have been cool until now, we went to different high schools but kept in contact through the 2 others by playing on our computers. Recently we fell out, it was a big thing and ultimately I was kicked out of the group, but before this I went on a long emotional, and vulnerable spiel I thought was safe with who I thought were my friends. But no A has a very small YouTube channel where he mostly posted clips of the group playing games, but then he posted my messages and I had to contact a mutual to talk to him and then he refused to unblock me, I asked him to take the video down, he privated it, I told the mutual to tell him thanks, he then unprivated the video. I told him we don’t have to end on bad terms but we are going to have a serious issue if this persists to be on his public channel, he refused.

Sorry about over writing or whatever but I think the backstory is necessary, I don’t wish ill will towards A but it has seriously gotten to me, I want my life to be more private and this has caused a lot of turmoil, is there anything the staff at my school can do to help me? I just want the videos down, the school he goes to is within the same county. I am currently in Highschool. Any suggestions as to what I can do, my parents would be on board with dealing with this outside of the school system maybe speaking with his parents, so help! What can we do?

I would like to know if in my case there is a possibility to enter a good university in the USA? What to pay special attention to and what are the requirements for students for full or partial funding besides GPA when it comes to a master's degree.

Tell you Representative to vote “No” on H.R. 899 to terminate the Department of Ediucation

H.R. 899 was just introduced to terminate the Department of Education.

The main reason for the creation of the Department of Education was the fact that individual states across the country were violating students’ rights to equal access to education.

The Department of Education helps protect the rights of students with disabilities, both learning and/or physical, as well as ensure funding for low-income communities both rural & urban.

Please look it up. I am not willing to sacrifice the protection of our children’s rights to an education. If you agree contact your congress persons & tell them to vote “No” on H.R. 899

The time to act is NOW.

When are we striking?

We have bemoaned the fate of the education system for decades. When are we going to do something about it? Nothing is going to happen unless a substantial amount of districts buy into either state-wide or national strikes.

I don't think I'm going to pass high school. What are my options?

I'm supposed to graduate this year, but I don't know if I'm going to be able to. Covid really fucked up my mental health and ability to learn. I've been in the second semester for 8 days and so far I've had 6 panic attacks and cried in class once. I've been trying medication after medication, but nothing really helping. There are times when I'm having such a bad time I just skip school entirely which I know is stupid as fuck but idk. Can't stand being here.

I've failed all of my classes last year except L.A. and social studies, so I was retaking the easier math and science that I was supposed to complete last year. I can't get math through my stupid head, nothing sticks. I've wanted to drop out for a while now but I really want to go to college.

I was originally fine with taking grade 12 again but the principal keeps telling me how I need to figure out my shit and my mother will not hear it, she wants me to graduate this year. Plus I'm already kinda bullied and repeating another year would just make people think I'm stupid. I used to be a gifted kid so everyone has such high expectations of me that I cannot meet

I want to get my GED but idk if that would work because I can't seem to learn anything. I want to go to university for social work and I can't imagine doing anything else, I need to get into college but I'm at a loss. I need some sort of help

Edit: I'm on the waitlist for a therapist but can't get in until March

If school admin actually did their jobs of building relationships with students and their families, schools would be a lot better!

Teachers in the trenches are expected to build relationships with their students and families. Just think…what if all the admin stepped up and did as much work as teachers doing this? It’d be like the whole school supporting and working with kids, I think things would be more equitable too.

What No One Is Talking About

The US spends Far more on Social Security and Medicare for older generations than they do on education and affordable housing, which would benefit younger generations.

Since Social Security is not means-tested, the largest number of wealthy Americans in history are collecting benefits even if they don’t need them. They’re living longer too, so they are collecting more benefits than they paid into, which means the younger generations are paying more while making the same…

NAEP Math and English Results are out - they're a bit concerning

NAEP, The Nation's Report Card is the National Assessment of Educational Progress, and has been checking what kids can do since 1969.

Here are some key points:

• Math and Reading are both still behind pre-pandemic levels by 3 points and 5 points respectively

• 39% of Grade 8 Math students are below NAEP basic

• 33% of Grade 8 Reading are below NAEP basic

The percentage of students below “Basic” is the highest it’s ever been.

( NAEP does three tests fyi:

NAEP basic, proficient and advanced )

A deeper issue is that the achievement gap is widening.

• Even though there is minor recovery (especially for Grade 4 Math) > it is being driven by mid to high performers.

• The low performers (bottom 25%) have barely moved the needle or are worse off.

• For example in Grade 8 Math, the top 75% level students improved at a rate ~4 times more than the bottom 25% level.

- And these higher performing students were already starting at over 70 points above the low performers.

“Those who need the help are not getting it”

Interesting observation, the attendance rates seem to correlate with performance. Attendance has gotten better since 2022, but is still lower than pre-pandemic levels, and the scores have moved accordingly.

The point is not to sound any alarms, but to provide clarity. We got work to do!

I understand why it’s bad for the DOE to be dissolved that much is obvious but why do people want it to happen. I heard a trump quote about how the USA is falling behind other countries in academics but how exactly would defunding education make people more educated?

Ideal school system

Let’s set aside what’s going on right now for the moment and try to brainstorm a even better schooling system! Let’s face it our school system was once the envy of the world but is now falling far behind. I would love to see a system that automatically adjusts to the students skill level and needs.

This is as political as I’m going to hopefully get on this post. The School/teachers should be politically and socially NEUTRAL except in very limited circumstances ( to be determined later). So teaching your political/social views is a big no no without the consent of the parent/school administration.

The only thing you can teach in this way is how government works and how to do your own research ( seeking source material).

What else would be a good idea for a new school system?

How would you close a $112 million education budget deficit?

So far in Feb. '25 nearly a thousand San Diego school district employees have volunteered to take early retirement. While this helps the budget, it also creates a sudden vacuum of experienced teachers and staff members. I would like to read what else can be done to raise money for the school district.💡

Failures of duolingo to growth

Hey, I'm a marketing manager working for a gamification-centric design studio, and I’ve been diving deep into how gamification drives growth and retention in apps. A few months back, I came across an inspiring story about Jorge Mazal (former CPO of Duolingo) and how Duolingo achieved 4.5x growth through some smart gamification tweaks and product strategies. It really hit home for me because of the parallels I see in what we do at our studio. Let me share the highlights!

Gamification Tweaks

  • Challenge: Duolingo was a top ed-tech app in 2018, but growth had stagnated.
  • Focus: Instead of chasing new users, the team decided to focus on retention by enhancing gamification.
  • Inspiration: They drew ideas from games like Gardenscapes, specifically the "moves counter," which added urgency and excitement.
  • Implementation: Duolingo introduced a feature where users had limited tries to complete a lesson before restarting.
  • Outcome:
    • Total flop. 😬
    • No improvement in retention or daily active users (DAU).
    • Key takeaway: The team learned the importance of understanding user context before implementing ideas.

Referral Program

  • Strategy: Inspired by Uber’s referral playbook, Duolingo offered free months of Super Duolingo to users who brought in friends.
  • Result:
    • A modest 3% increase in new users.
    • However, it wasn’t the game-changer they hoped for.
  • Lesson Learned: Copying strategies without tailoring them to the audience’s needs doesn’t yield effective results.

Now, I’m curious: What’s your experience with gamification in apps? Have you come across strategies that clicked—or flopped? Let’s chat!

Better education system

Before I get into it disclosure: I’m about to ramble a little bit on an idea I have and I’d like to hear your opinion on it because I know it’s not perfect. I’d also like to see if anybody else has thought about this subject before and come up with their own solution.

I’m American so I can’t speak on other countries education system but I feel like this is better than our current system but it would take a lot of time and mom to ever implement and I have neither. So without further ado…

Grade one through five are perfectly fine. They do a good job teaching the basics of math history science and so on.

I believe that a better system for grades six through 12 would be possibly grades eight through 12. If you start to pick your specialization then start picking classes standardized, of course but geared towards things that you’re interested in that way you stay more engaged.

Realistically in life, you’re not gonna need to know every single thing so it’s weird that we try to teach every single subject at the same level to every person why not Taylor it more towards the interest of a certain person .

In my vision, it helps students learn and develop skills towards their intended career. Path earlier helps them retain that information because they learn it earlier and their brain is not full of garbage. They’ll never need because I’m also of the belief the brain has a limited capacity I don’t think you can learn forever . I think that once you have so much information other stuff stops sitting in your brain is easily.

Basically it would be like starting to college track early. It’s like when you have electives in high school based on your interest you get to pick do that earlier and start broader so in sixth grade right you no longer have your standard five classes in fact at the end of fifth grade or possibly at the end of you know maybe wait till they’re older just a little bit end of eighth grade you could have in fact actually yeah we’ll do eighth grade because that’s when you start to learn basic algebra, so we’ll see eighth grade 8th grade you’ve done basic algebra done American history you’ve done a little bit of world history so starting eighth grade you take an aptitude test and then in high school grades nine through 12 we could possibly even make it longer. I mean, realistically you could be in school until you’re 20 unless you wanted to go down one of those working career path then you could get out sooner and it would kind of skip the middleman of college cause you could get your further education for those who wanted it in grades 13 and 14 And for those who want to go the manual labor career path, they would pick those trade type classes in high school and go down that path instead

You could have a branch for people who enjoy history and they could go into history their first year branch out into different sections of history, possibly archaeology, possibly specializing in certain periods of history you could have teaching sections too, which could be paired with those history, classes or those science classes And basically start broader and go narrower. The problem is then you will need a lot more teachers, but if you made knowledge, a bigger part of society, not only would you have smarter people in society as a whole you’d also be pushing more people into like teaching and you could also promote teaching by having it be an actually noble call with a decent pay

I also think we should add in philosophy into middle school age teaching curriculum because it can help understand how the world works and how you should think and understand how you do think without being told how you should think philosophy is a good thing philosophy gets your mind inquiring

Using AI as a student in 2025?

Without spending too much time providing context, I am currently a student going to a local community college that I've attended on/off for a few years now. After being focused as an arts student for my first few semesters, I recently switched to more business oriented classes in pursuit of a broader degree.

The best way I can put it is just feeling out of my depth not knowing anything about the differences between these LLMs and knowing if I can even trust it as a tool in general. I have never had much interaction with AI models aside from number of one offs that have mostly revolved around me asking it stupid prompts for fun with my friends, but outside of just using it to create cool/interesting images, I've always been sort of under the impression that AI is just a cheat code, a generative answer focused on giving the user the response that they will be happy with ahead of it being correct.

Now days I see sooooo much AI generated content across YouTube and Instagram and basically every other social platform that exists, at a certain point I definitely feel like I need to adopt the tool to my arsenal if I am going to succeed. I don't like the idea of relying on a tool to do well, I would love to just do well without using AI as a crutch but I feel so behind especially after how hard Covid hit me when I was in HS, there are gaps in my education.

Compared to when I first started classes in college when talking about using AI teachers seemed to treat it like cheating but, now days it seems relatively (a word I use lightly) acceptable to use AI in a classroom environment as an assistant or tool, much like a calculator, as long as it is not directly copying and pasting your AI's response directly as your answer for the classwork. I have buddies going to much bigger schools and they seem to think its important to be able to use the tool even if its not a necessity. They use it for help with their code, help them understand and take notes on the course content and now its basically apart of their normal work cycle for a lot of their classes. For me, I'm pretty much just uncertain of it all at this point, I don't know where I should fold and fit it into my work flow without compromising my education.

TL:DR -

I want to know how to use AI responsibly as a student.

🏫 Colorado’s school choice boom: A win for families or a system that favors the wealthy?

Colorado has one of the most extensive school choice programs in the U.S., with 28% of students opting for charter, private, or open enrollment schools. But who truly benefits?

✔️ Higher-income families often have the time, resources & knowledge to navigate enrollment & transportation.
✔️ Some charter schools reflect public school diversity, while others resemble elite private schools.
✔️ Education expert Kevin Welner warns that school choice often “adds a layer of stratification on top of existing residential stratification.”

Should school choice policies be reformed to improve equity? What solutions would help level the playing field?

"The government should nationalize companies like Walmart and Costco. Food stamps only exist to funnel money away from the public groceries and into the hands of greedy private companies." - some anti-school voucher activist, probably.

Nobody would ever seriously argue that a government monopoly could do a better job at providing people with a diverse assortment of affordable, high-quality food. We've seen the evidence of where that leads in Cuba and former communist regimes. Yet that's exactly the claim public school advocates make about school choice and vouchers.

Chinese (Mandarin) Revision Resources?

I’m an A-level student currently using The Feynman Lectures for physics revision and a website called Save My Exams for other subjects like math. I really like these resources because they’re intuitive and help me stay ahead of the game.

However, I’m wondering if there are similar resources available in Mandarin. I struggle with English, so having materials in Mandarin would be really helpful. I’m open to any format—websites, YouTube channels, books, etc.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Career Options

Hi there! Fall 2025 is the first term that I will likely be able to receive enough financial aid to begin attending college. I've debated on what major to choose for quite a while, but one of the top contenders for me is education. I do have a couple years of experience teaching in child care programs, and have quite enjoyed working in this type of setting. While earning my associate's in early childhood education is certainly an option, another would be to pursue a bachelor's degree. However, I'm struggling to choose between the following majors at the bachelor's level: early childhood education (prek-5), music education (general or choral), or intervention specialist. I was wondering if anyone could weigh in and give me any tips that mightve helped them decide. I appreciate any help!
