Looking to learn from real stories—what unconventional or self-directed learning paths that you’ve taken have helped you to build a meaningful life or/ and a career?
I have a feeling this will be downvoted into oblivion but I had to ask. Why is advanced math mandatory in school? The usual answers are "to teach problem solving" or "Becuase xyz things you use are made from math". But my problems with that is the fact that most kids are not going to pursue careers pertaining to math and I am yet to see math helping anybody solve non math related problems.
I was planning to dual degree in Comp Sci and Supply Chain management. Computer science for the knowledge on computers and coding and technology but has a very saturated job field and Supply chain management for a business degree and knowledge on business but the job scene is immensely better. Would cost me an extra year making it 5 to graduate. Worth it or no
Going to organise MUN with a team of 9 in a commerce based college and I'll be one of the chair. Drop down some tips and advices. Thank you in advance
Currently working on building somethin and I’m dead serious about making it succeed. I’m aiming for at least $20k/month revenue within the next 6 months.
I won’t be replying to anyone here, pls feel free to criticize, doubt, or talk shit. I’ll use every bit of it as fuel to stay consistent and prove myself.
I’ll come back in exactly on December 31 with an update on exactly where I stand. Until then, I’m putting my head down and grinding every single day.
I’m writing this as a statement and I will prove it.
Keep growing, everyone. See you on the other side..
The grind knows no shortcuts.
Guys pls provide me tips for my first day in new school.i am getting very nervous.startinh from 1.
Hi y'all! I'm a 22-year-old who is trying to better myself, but I'm not really sure what the right way to go about it is, given my situation. I would love any advice you can throw my way! I was homeschooled and had a lot of trouble with school. I have a lot of basic knowledge, and while officially I have a high school degree, I didn't get enough education after middle school. So I don't know much biology, have large gaps in history and math, and have a decently solid understanding of English.
Never had that high school experience. I'm worried that when I go back to college, I'll lack the skills to succeed and throw the money that I've worked hard for the past few years down the drain. I also don't know what I want to do in college; I just want to generally expand my mind. So that leads me back to high school.
To me, it makes a lot of sense. It will be a lot cheaper, give me a lot of general knowledge, and will be a good starting point. But mentioning this, some people think it's a waste of time. And I know that education is never a waste of time, but I do take their meaning. From what I've heard, a lot of people don't learn much in high school because it's mostly that basic information. It will further divide me from the average student, which is something I definitely want to avoid. And it will ultimately hold me back yet another year from getting a degree and later, a career.
I guess I'm just getting cold feet about the whole thing, but I know I can't just stay where I am. Any advice on my situation, tips on each path, or even personal experiences really help. Thanks ya'll!
TL:DR
Not sure whether to go back to high school, slightly overqualified, or go to college, underqualified
I am writing this post while I’m doing my programming assignment that the teacher won’t even check and will just give the marks for. I wonder what’s even the point of all this shit? I’ve always had this trouble with the education system (especially after getting into college). I was quite serious about my studies and used to study 10+ hours a day when I was in grade 10. I gained a lot of knowledge in science, math, physics, simply because I was really interested in those things.
However, after getting into college and looking at these people, I just don’t get it. We go to college, the teacher gives an assignment like “What is programming?” Someone from the back screams, “It’s a language that computers understand,” and blah blah blah. Nonsense.
I don’t hate education. I’m an extremely curious guy who’s always finding new ways to learn different stuff from the internet or whatever I like. For example, I’ve been learning guitar since I was 12; I’ve learned ethical hacking, programming, web development, business (which I’m currently working on). After doing all this and seeing everyone, it just makes me wonder—how come people don’t get it? Like, don’t they understand how every day their life is just structured by a set of rules? Go to college, waste time there (most college professors are just pathetic—god knows what they’re teaching), then come back, do the assignment, get a job, do that for 50 years, retire, and then die? Huh??
Like, I don’t know if I’m the one who’s dumb or if everyone around me is just not aware. I asked my friend, “Hey, do you ever wonder why you’re going to college? What’s the point of all this shit? What’s the point of doing the assignment? Did you actually learn anything?” And he goes, “idk…”
I’m really just sick of this whole college thing, and what makes me even more sick is how everyone’s just there without questioning anything at all. And if someone tries to tell them something, they’ll just say, “Hmm… cool but idk.” Like what’s going on with this world?
I’m really interested to know what others’ opinions are and if anyone thinks like this or can relate.
I’m gonna do my pathetic assignment now and prepare for my pathetic exam, just for pathetic marks, which will get me a piece of paper that’ll land me a job I’ll have to do for the rest of my life until I die miserable. Huh, gosh…
A story getting precisely zero attention outside of ESEA grant admin circles is that the Trump administration has yet to issue preliminary allocations for Titles IIA (professional development funds) and IIIA (ELL funds). States normally get these with their other ESEA figures in the early spring, but so far only Title IA and IVA figures have been released. The career professionals at ED (US Department of Education) are stating that OMB (Office of Management and Budget) has yet to tell them what the figures are, which were a part of the Continuing Resolution this spring.
The prevailing thought is that the Trump administration is slow walking the allocations so they can say they are “working on them” but in reality intend to illegally impound them (never allocate them to the states).
Why should you care? Not only is it a multi-billion dollar cut to education that goes against the wishes of Congress, but it also will have very really impacts on teachers and students. Not only are these funds broadly used for PD and ELL students, but they also fund a massive number of teaching positions across the country. Were you hired as part of a class-sizes reduction initiative or are you an instructional coach? Title IIa probably paid for that. In many small states, school districts transfer their Title IIA into Title I so they can operate more robust programs. With most school budgets already passed, this will mean either unprecedented cuts before the next school year even starts, or likely layoffs.
What can you do? Reach out to your legislative representatives and urge them to have OMB release the funding to ED. Despite what you may hear and see on the news, there is still some signs that this administration caves under pressure, specifically at ED.
TLDR; Trump hasn’t released all the ESEA funds approved by Congress for the coming school year, and it could cost you or your colleagues their job. Call your Senator or Representative and make some noise!
Hi all, I am in year 10 in the uk, I am doing my GCSE next year, I am confident I can get all grade 8/9 and I wanna do further maths, maths and physics at a level, i am debating doing a 4th but my teachers have told me that it is not worth it, I wanna start doing extracurriculars over the summer holiday, I think I wanna do physics at uni and i have an interest in computer science, theology, ai, machine learning, philosophy, physics, astronomy these sort of things although i really want to pursue physics as thats what intrigues me the most. I would like to get into cambridge to study this course, so what would be the best course of action for me to do?
Hey guys, so my sister will be enrolling in a university this month and she's stuck with two options. One is a Bachelor's in Education (English Language Teaching) and the other is a Bachelor's in English. It will be really helpful if you guys can weigh in on this, especially people working in these fields.
Is it hard?
Just seeking validation that I did the right thing. Two years ago each school in our district was required to have an academic competition club after school. I was to be the coach. The pay? Nothing. Zero. For the students, right? We could have up to 12 team members. I was able to wrangle 5 interested students. I tried to recruit from the after school care group-nope. Other larger schools had better participation. Kids in my area are into sports or don’t have transportation. It’s a lot of behind the scenes work to with filling out forms, team shirts, transportation to the competition, begging my school to spend money and actually order the supplies. For the coming year we were given the option to participate in competition so I called a meeting of my school leadership to decide. 2 of those 5 showed up because meeting after school presents a challenge for them (thank you for the double standard). These 2 asked what I wanted. I said (1) I didn’t want to stay after school and (2) run a club with no pay. We agreed: no competition for the coming year! If I stay after school it will be to complete my own work. I am so relieved. I already stay after one day each week for various meetings. Probably looks bad to higher ups but I’m at year 20 so…
How can I keep going when motivation dies? Guys please share your thoughts so it can help me to stay motivated and I can focus on my study.

Hey! I’m a Spanish teacher and I run my own website and online school for learning Spanish. I usually promote my lessons in Russian Telegram groups. Some of them allow paid ads, and that’s worked quite well.
Now I’m trying to reach people from other regions, both immigrants living in Spanish-speaking countries (like Argentina, Spain, or Mexico) and anyone genuinely interested in learning Spanish from scratch or improving their level.
I'm mainly looking to connect with people from English-speaking countries, Europe, Brazil, and Asia, especially those who might need Spanish for daily life, work, or just personal interest.
I’ve been looking for Telegram or WhatsApp groups (or similar platforms, not Facebook please) where I could share what I offer. I’m totally open to paying for ads, but outside the Russian-speaking world, it’s been hard to find active or relevant groups.
I already use Instagram and TikTok, and I’m working on improving my website and planning to invest in Google Ads soon. Please just don’t recommend platforms like Preply or Italki. I already have my own platform and prefer to work independently.
If you know any groups, channels, or have ideas on how to reach the right audience. I’d really appreciate it. Thanks!
I find it ridiculous that teachers have to pay for supplies like crayons because the school can't afford it, but the same school funds multiple sports teams with stadiums gear and travel expenses for goddamn 10 year olds. How did we get here? How did we, as a group, come to decide that a select few being able to throw a ball was more important than everyone being able to fucking read?
At the end of the day ALL that sports bring to the table are entertainment. Whereas actual education is what the world is built on. And yet we value organized sports infinitely more than truly learning.
Will this mindset ever change? Or are we just destined to keep being dumber until it's a 100 years later and the only people knowledgeable enough to run critical infrastructure are immigrants because everyone who grew up here was denied an actual education in favor of sports?
What is your experience with this program?
Hello people,

We’re opening a limited pilot and want a handful of motivated students to shape the future of schooling with us.
Interested? Email hello@padho.ai with “Pilot – Class 8/9” in the subject line and we’ll share next steps.
I'm an elementary specials teacher. I'm strongly considering moving to a instructional model that uses far less collaborative group work and way more independent work. I've always used pairs/small groups, but the last 3 years have shown me that the majority of my students don't thrive with that kind of learning experience. I barely have had a day in my class in 3 years without a student crying out of frustration. Usually it's that it's really hard for students to share and/or not be the boss of a group. It's crazy and I'm so tired of it.
I did a 15 year analysis of our senior class average GPAs. In 15 years the senior GPA has gone from 82 to a 92. In another ten years everyone will have a 100%. Is anyone else seeing this absurd grade inflation? Our senior class size is about 225 students give or take. I find it very disheartening and I don’t think it’s helping our youth prepare for life after high school
Hello everyone,
I Built something that might interest some of you.
The challenge: Wikipedia contains incredible educational content, but it's often overwhelming for students and not structured for active learning.
The solution: An app that transforms Wikipedia articles into comprehensive learning materials:
Educational benefits: - Accommodates different learning styles - Provides immediate assessment/feedback - Makes complex topics more accessible - Transforms passive reading into active learning
The goal is supporting self-directed learning and research skills.
For educators: How do you currently help students process dense informational content? Would tools like this be useful in your teaching context?
Feedbacks appreciated, Thank you

When the extent of the university’s involvement with slavery was unearthed, a scholar tracking descendants of enslaved workers was suddenly fired

No, your student is not a "visual learner." Or an "auditory learner." Or a "kinesthetic-scent-triggered-by-smooth-jazz" learner.
Brains don’t work like that. Why does this fallacy keep coming up in some education forum at least once a week despite decades debunking the theory?
There’s zero scientific evidence that teaching people in their so-called “preferred learning style” helps them learn better.
In fact, it often hurts by giving people permission to avoid the real work of processing knowledge deeply, by engaging in an objectively more appropriate exercise for the topic at hand. (Really, is there anyone who learns, say, how to use Excel, more effectively by "watching a video" than by doing an actual spreadsheet project?)
Don’t get me wrong: personalized learning is still awesome. But that just means adjusting the difficulty, pacing, or topic sequence to how well you know something — not whether you "like" podcasts better than diagrams.
What most people call “learning styles” are really just learning preferences. Sure, someone might like to watch a video instead of doing flashcards. But that doesn’t mean it’s going to lead to better learning outcomes.
In fact, the easier or more “comfortable” something feels… the less likely it is to stick.
Real learning = effortful. Uncomfortable. Active. Often annoyingly repetitive. And unfortunately, not optimized around your vibes.
So can we just keep pushing for personalized learning that works, based on science and not zodiac signs?
<braces for hate from the remaining learning styles stans>
okay as a highschool student i've seen heaps of guest speakers and things to educate kids on bullying, my issue with it is we are taught how to work out if we are being bullied and how to deal with bullying, but never how to actually IDENTIFY if you yourself are a bully, kids somewhat know what to do if they are being bullied but not how to work out if they are bullies themselves. we are taught to have sympathy for the bully and how to deal with them, but i've never once seen anything about how to understand your actions could be bullying. as children we are very emotion driven but also struggle to identify our own emotions and to recognize when OUR emotions and issues in our lives are causing us to act like bullies.
also why the hell have I been in so many health classes and never once heard menopause mentioned?
also like next to nothing about consent ??? i truly believe that if kids are experiencing bad things like CCSA then there needs to be education around it. things happen way to much for there to be little to no education around it.
I believe these issues do fall under something education organisations and school to need to work on.
I feel like there are big gaps in our educations that leave out very real social issues that happen at school and at young ages. I go to a school in nz if that helps maybe in different countries its better I don't know would like to hear other peoples experiences.
I study in Europe, and something that really frustrates me is how different GPA systems are across countries and even schools. In some US schools, people get a 4.0 just for showing up, participating, and turning in homework. Meanwhile, at my school, you basically have to get 100% in every exam, test, and assignment in every subject just to get a 4.0 GPA equivalent.
To make it worse, in the U.S. it seems like getting 90% on a test is considered normal or even “average,” whereas here in Europe, if you score anything above 70%, you’re basically a genius. So obviously, GPAs look a lot higher on paper in the U.S., even though the grading is way more lenient.
It just feels unfair, like European students might be working harder and learning more, but we end up with lower GPAs that don’t reflect that. How do universities even compare international students fairly when the systems are so different?
Anyone else feel this? Or has any explanation?
I just finished my first year of Uni I’m 20(M). All my friends and class fellows are finishing up their 2nd or 3rd year. I feel as though I’ve fallen behind them. Is this true or am I just being dramatic and it’s not that deep.
i'm about to go into my senior year of high school and I have no idea what I'm gonna do. I just started applications and I've been putting down undecided although I do think I'm gonna do law after I finish my four years. I did the AP capstone pathway and I think my greatest skills are researching, writing, and comprehension. My score for the reading section on my SAT was a 730 and my GPA is over 4. One of my essays/research papers during AP Capstone pathway was about corporate dissent, and protection of employees from managers, which I really enjoyed researching and presenting said research. I think I might do corporate law, but I'm also not really sure what kind of law is out there. I don't want to major in poli-sci , and I don't think I'm "good" at any of the stem majors. I really don't wanna apply undecided, but I'm not really sure what major would suit me.
The measures come amid widespread reports of scammers using financial aid applications to steal both federal and state money.

Beware of the energy-industrial complex bearing gifts. Petro-pedagogy is a Trojan Horse with climate denial stealthily hidden within and brought into the classroom, attempting to convert children and teachers into fossil fuel enthusiasts. Petro-pedagogy teaches that oil is a benefactor to humanity and that modern civilization cannot exist without fossil fuels, but says little, if anything at all, about the connection of fossil fuels to the climate crisis ...
The science of climate change has done just fine against climate denialism, and the science has only grown stronger over time. The problem has been that a glaring gap has opened between scientific knowledge and public audience perception of that knowledge (and the scientific consensus). A large portion of the public audiences has this issue, which can negatively affect all aspects of climate education, as school boards, teachers and parents may suffer from the consensus gap. As the energy-industrial complex has poured millions of dollars into PR firms to promote its propaganda against the scientific consensus, climate denial has crippled climate communication and has had negative influence on climate education ...
Climate denial has been able to dampen social and political will to act to stop the climate crisis. Climate denial by the energy-industrial complex and by climate-denial organizations (and politicians) have invaded classrooms in some places. This review is a call to arms before irreparable, long-term damage is done to the school system and knowledge building on the climate crisis. This is particularly important for children who live in regions that are conservative and/or connected to the energy-industrial complex (more so when also underfunded by the government). Organizations in two camps are promoting climate denial disguised as educational programmes:
Climate-denial organizations. The promotion of conservative values and denying the science of climate change (for example, CO2 Coalition, Energy Creates, EverBright Media, Heartland Institute, and PragerU). This group has a larger and more direct climate-denial footprint compared to petro-pedagogy (and more information, therefore, is available than with the petro-pedagogy organizations, as presented above).
Petro-pedagogy organizations. The promotion of fossil fuels and ignoring the science of climate change (for example, Energising Futures, Energy4me, Energy Champions, Inside Education, NXplorers, Oklahoma Energy Resources Board, Scientix, STEM Careers Coalition, and Switch Energy Alliance). This is a less overt, but probably more insidious, form of climate denial and is climate denial by omission of climate change issues ...
Raising awareness of the cagey practices of climate denial in public education will help identify and prevent it. Kids agree that no room exists for climate denial in their classroom
"Climate Denial and the Classroom" - link is to the peer-reviewed article that the above had been published.
I don’t know if I’m inexperienced, but when I read I add unnecessary words that are not in the book or text. The sentence makes sense with these words but it ruins my flow. Also when I read I can’t track my eyes like my mind tries to see multiple words at one time and my brain gets foggy.I think that’s what causing me to add filler words, like my brain is reading the words but it’s just thinking of something random moment in my head. It might just be skill issue though or maybe short term content frying me idk. And my eyes are fine.
For some reason, some teachers are relying on AI detectors.
I can already tell it's going pretty badly. I wrote an essay for an assessment task, pretty good, not perfect, but nearly... I got 90% AI.
Luckily, I have a good reputation among the teachers, so not too much trouble, just got asked if I used AI, I didn't so I said no, and that was it.
Some others weren't so lucky and were made to do incident reports, and some got straight up zeros.
But like... how accurate are these AI detectors? They don't seem that good.
Future of education is here with AI. And it’s successful.
https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/marketplace-tech/id73330855?i=1000713555130
I'm highly skeptical that AI will make our students smarter, more focused, or more motivated. I've seen few AI Ed Tech products that actually have students' academic growth in mind. Furthermore, everything I've seen out there drops rigor for students. When we lower rigor, students suffer and fall behind. The interests of the companies are not necessarily aligned with students. All of this stuff was launched without proper research, just like phones.
Be skeptical. People closest to problems usually understand them the best. Focus on your students' academic growth and ask yourself: Are my students learning more effectively with this product in my classroom? Does this product increase rigor and academic expectations for my students?
Ever since we transferred out daughter (1st grade) to new school, she was complaining about how boring math class is. She says it's too easy for her. Then, she comes home with worksheets without 100 percent accuracy so I was like what are you talking about?😂
Then today teacher sent us a grading report along with MAP test score. She was in 99 percentile(in math). Now I'm wondering how accurate MAP test is. Can she guess answers and get higher scores in those tests? Or I wonder if she was telling the truth that she really feels advanced in her current school.
(I think her teacher is in summer break so I don't want to bother her)
Sorry if it’s not the right sub…
Having one of those “where to go moments” as a parent…my youngest (7, who it is believed has dyslexia and dyspraxia) is coming to end of year 2 and school, who she joined mid term have said that she is a fair way behind and would benefit from repeating the year.
I’m torn between what’s right for her as a person (socially and she can already feel she is behind) and her to be educated (don’t want her to confidence to fall even more by feeling even further behind)
Can anyone share a view on the upsides and downsides of repeating a year?
For clarity, we are in private system not state
Thank you so much
Naturally, if you really want people to succeed you provide them with tools. Not sharp or metallic tools that kill but with information needed for each individual to thrive. We are so used to working harder that we forgot there was such a thing as working smarter. Can a country be anything other than the sum of its "people" ? Its not industry that makes a great country it is the sum of its people in all areas of interest. Industry only benefits a small segment of the American population. Sometimes those in power try to kill the spirit by capitalizing on our fears. The rhetoric of a mad man shaping, shapeless lives.
So i ask, would a great country want to make "business" class and its mogul a ruling class? Or, would we want a leader who wants his people to get a chance at a good education? We can be more than baby makers and worker bees. To be clear, education is not just what is in books. Its way more than letters on a page or a diploma. It is an opportunity to ingest, more than food, that can make for achieving the best version of ourselves. Like money can buy you a boat but there is no Greatness about that.. Is everyone rooting for someone other than themselves? I understand there are people who do not want to spend time learning but there are people who are and were never afforded the time to learn or given information that could transform their world and making the world around them a better place to live, for all. MPGA y'all.
Isn’t it’s getting weird all around having these massive AI development like chat GPT. Like the essence of human creativity is mixing up and getting dull. It’s a human creation too, but also overpowers other aspects of humanity. I mean for art, philosophy which is a real major part of humanness development. Getting overshadowed by AI feels surreal and weird to be honest. I mean I don’t know if I’m not understanding the concept or it’s actually a problem. I need people’s opinion on this.
Now this is what most students don't want to accept but the reality. What do you do about this honestly
saw this question asked here but the post was 14 yo, so wondering if anyone has any recs for media (documentaries, podcasts etc) about teaching? I know of Teacher Quit Talk and enjoy that, curious about more podcasts of people sharing their experiences or narrative-style longer form podcasts diving into education related topics. Also interested to know any documentaries you recommend.
Thanks!
I have been enrolling my daughter for private high school in California.
I was wondering if the tuition is at a reasonable price (I'm not trying to be "out of touch", it's about the average private school cost in my area)
The starting yearly tuition is around 56k per year. (Not including meals or transportation or travel)
Is 56k too much considering the education?
I’m not looking for a heated conversation.
I understand the issue of copyright thievery - That to me is more of a Human issue than an AI issue. It’s bad people being bad. What do you expect 🤷
But on the bright side, Ai will lead to so many advancements in medicine, government, etc.
I’m curious as to why at the last conference I went to, half of the room was angry about it.
Are educators halting the development and rejecting this technology on the basis of it being stolen IP or is there something deeper to it? Fear of job loss?
I want to know your thoughts!!!
As we all know that there are so many changes occurring in the education sector so, Is college degree still worth it in today's job's market.
We’ve been rolling out a BYOD policy and quickly realized it’s a balancing act—keeping work data secure without overstepping on personal privacy.
What’s worked well for us so far:
Creating a separate work container/profile
Remote wipe only targeting work data
Easy onboarding without IT hand-holding
No need for VPN to access internal tools
Curious how others are handling this—are you using full MDM, MAM-only, or something in between? Always open to better ideas.
Don’t even think of getting an education in tech now or in years to come. the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA). The TCJA significantly altered Section 174 of the IRS code. This is preventing tech companies from getting immediate tax benefits. Due to this change tech companies have laid off over 100,000 employees and have no plans to hire.
It is generally believed that 30% of educated people of any society can make 100% educated society very easily. Is it true, guys please share your thoughts about this.
I've been homeschooled sense 3rd grade and at this point I feel It's important to get my GED and hopefully go to school for nursing, I just have no idea where I should actually start If I should take classes online in person or just study and take the test I'm honestly not sure, I just don't want it to take forever so I was wondering what would be the smartest thing to do In my position?
Hey everyone! I just got a call for an interview for an administrator position for a special education preschool! I am halfway through my admin program.
I have been a daycare director and have been in public school 8 years as a teacher. Does anyone have any tips on interviewing? It’s been a while!
I 16M have been doing A-level Maths Physics and Computer science for almost a year now and it's just gone too far it's too late for me to drop or change and it's really stressing me out I have been increasingly annoyed and with the countless hours of work I'm putting in I am not seeing results especially in maths. My brain is always elsewhere and I can't help myself. What should I do to deal with stress as I feel like I'm the only one.
I'm just trying to understand how kids can reach young adulthood and have few social skills, poor self-confidence, no means of internal regulation and decisionmaking and so on. When I was going to school, excelling without those things was virtually impossible. Even if you didn't exactly thrive, you still left with something.
I recently came across a post on Next Door from a high school graduate seeking babysitting work who was going to charge $20 an hour or $45 a day. People tried explaining the problems with this but she was politely immovable. It scares me to think some one like that is who our democracy may come to depend on.
Hello everyone, I’m wondering if anyone here has been accepted into a good graduate school with a lower GPA. I graduated from a well-regarded public college with a cumulative GPA of 2.56, although my major GPA was 3.0. I understand that most programs place more weight on cumulative GPA.
My GPA was impacted by several challenges—I was working full-time while studying, and during the COVID period, I experienced depression, which resulted in a few Fs and Ds. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to retake or replace those grades.
Given this background, I’m curious—if someone has a strong GMAT score, solid professional experience at a reputable company, and is fluent in three languages, does the undergraduate GPA still significantly affect admission decisions?
I’d really appreciate hearing your insights or experiences. Thank you!
Hello, bit of a rant, but I want to study in another country next year, so I'd like to know these things before I move away. If you think I'm whining over nothing that's perfectly fine, regardless of people's opinions I just want to get some recommendations.
In my home country I often experience that colleges and universities are really hammering down on the 'school experience', that it's going to be the most important time of your life, and that for the time that you are studying there, it *is* your life. Now of course my studies are going to be a part of my life, but I've got a lot more going on than just that and I have no interest in a school trying to push themselves into every single aspect of my life, especially my private life. I don't really appreciate having a mandatory conversation with my mentor every month, why can't I reach out when I need help and leave it at that? It feels nosy and unnecessary. And whilst on the topic of unnecessary: months before my study even started, I was added to a group chat with 'useful info' (debatable) and fun facts about the study, the school and languages in general. Why am I forced to be in a group chat and getting sent texts from my school half a year before my study even starts?
Another thing. I'm not opposed to ocassional group projects, but over here in the country it's 90% group projects and 10% solo work, depending on the subject. My brother studied History at university and he did not have many group projects, but for languages, business, journalism and politics it's all nearly entirely group projects, especially in the first year. Now I get that speaking with others is valuable for learning languages, as is debating during politics, but it's nearly every damn project we ever do. I don't want to constantly depend on my classmates for the results of my work, I value independence a ton and also just want to be proud of work that was created solely by me. Again, a few group projects every once in a while, necessary and completely fine. Every period? Nope.
So, the question. Are there any countries where this clingy school culture is less prevalent, where schools are just for going to class and studying, and then when you go home you can actually disconnect from your education? And education systems where group projects are more scarce? Or ideally both? Thanks!
Unfortunately my BA in Graphic Design and nearly 10 years of experience doesn't cut it anymore - I barely get any freelance projects and I also moved to Switzerland because, well, love. For the last two years I cannot find anything here, it is super competitive and learning the language didn't help. So I am looking to study a Masters, preferably in Switzerland, so I can be more competitive in the job market.
So far I've been admitted to:
- MSc in Data Visualization and UX Design (in CH) - 1500CHF/Semester
- MSc in Human-Centered Digital Innovation (in CH) - 1000 CHF / Semester
- MA in Data-Driven Design (Utrecht) - 1500CHF/Semester - but only 1 year!
- MSc in Creative Leadership (Austria) - free
- BSc Informatics and Digital Innovation (Austria) - free
All of those are super interesting for me, mainly the BSc, but having one more Bachelors behind my back that I will finish after 4 years and who knows what the field with engineering will look by then kind of puts me off. It is the same with the other Masters - I am not sure whether by the time I finish the jobs of UX or Data Visualization will be made redundand..
What do you think? What would you study?
Lately a lot of students use AI, and even some professors are already starting to rely on it. It makes me wonder how are schools actually handling this now, and what will they do going forward?
Are they adapting and trying to include it in learning? Or are they focusing more on making strict rules to limit its use? Maybe a mix of both? I’ve also heard stories of professors using AI without really checking what it says, that kind of worries me.
I just graduated from my local community college and decided I want to get a medical assistant program under my belt as well. My local college does offer this course, but it takes 2 years and is much more expensive than what carrington college seems to be offering. They advertise completion of this course in 9 months. Sounds like a good deal, right?
I go onto their website and it’s incredibly difficult to find estimated tuition costs. You have to go to page 250-something on a linked PDF to find a tiny chart that gives you a rough estimate. A little strange, but I didn’t think too much of it.
I could not for the life of me find out when their next course for this program started. Clicking “get started” on their website seemed to be the only way to get more information, however it just brings you to a box where it asks for your name and contact information. Also weird. I call them and ask when the next program starts, and instead of answering my question, they interview me and proceed to ask me to take a tour of the campus and talk to a financial advisor about costs. So strange! All I want to know is when the next course starts!😭
They’re not forthcoming with information. It feels like they want to rope me in before giving any details. Seems very shady imo, anyone else experience this?
Hello all,
I am starting a company that does outreach programs in education. This includes going to community centers and schools and teaching programs or events. Does anyone have any advice on what insurance to get for this? I already have some clients that want to work with me, but I have been advised that I need insurance first.
What kind should I get? Thank you
I compiled many resources, books , notes summaries past papers for SAT here: https://vastacademyofficial.wordpress.com/
There is a pretty active SAT study community too on the site if you want to join
I really put some time into this✌️
HOPE IT HELPS :P
Always seeing so many parties and grand celebrations for high school , but never enough for college. Shouldn’t it be the other way around cuz college is a lot more effort and requires more effort and smartness?
How can this be emulated for those who don’t go to private school?
Not sure if this is the right sub, but just looking for a bit of advice!
I work in college admissions at the moment and am wanting to sync my calendars. My work calendar has appointments with prospective & admitted students on it, but the only information listed is the meeting modality and the student’s name.
Am I risking a FERPA violation in syncing my work calendar to my personal calendar?
My first post on this sub, please let me know if I do something wrong regarding flairs, or other.
Recently, I've submitted my thesis (MSc level). Likewise, my fellow students do the same. The only part to complete is to present and defend the thesis. Part of this defence is that fellow students read the thesis, and actively participate in final sessions by asking questions and engaging in dialog. This means that the work is shared, at least amongst some students.
I have received five of these works to read and prepare for the final sessions. However, when reading this my spinder-senses go off: this looks very LLM in writing style. I go and find an online AI detector. Results on the summary (essentially the first page with text).
AI generated: 35%, 85%, 100%, 0%, 0%.
I've checked some other paragraphs, and also these jump out. I'm quite stunned. I'm not against an LLM as assistent, as support, as a tool to help think, but this seems blatant "generate this for me" --> copy, paste. I fear that this will go undetected.
This fear is driven by several factors: first is that turnitin only validates for English language at our university. But that isn't our native language. Most reports are not in English language and thus turnitin will never flag anything. At least: until the software gets an (the) upgrade and the university retroactively runs checks for whatever reason. Secondly, the university has a desire that potential fraud isn't leaked out to the public: it would severely damage the reputation of the university and the worth of their diploma's. Even if similar activity is employed by students at other faculties or universities.
This puts me in a quandary: I think educational integrity should be secured. But to me there is no benefit of having this coming out publicly. It is also my diploma. Lastly: I could falsely accuse people. AI detectors are far from reliable (although my personal spider senses also do not trust this work). Yet people could just ask: "I wrote this, please keep the language the same but make it more readable).
I'm curious what others think on this case, and possible what I should (not) do.
This fall, my husband and I will be looking at schools for my daughter for when she goes into kindergarten.
I went through a phase for a few years where I was adamant that I wanted to homeschool our kids because I didn't believe that traditional methods of education were good for them. I watched a TED talk on how schools kill creativity, got really into podcasts that demonized traditional school and glorified educating your kids out in nature, read a book about how kids learn, and really wanted something different for our kids than traditional education. However, in the past year or so, I've realized that homeschooling is definitely not the path our family should take because of my personality and shortcomings as well as my oldest's personality. She has also really thrived at her traditional preschool and learned far more than I would have taught her at home and has grown socially and emotionally.
We are very fortunate that we have basically every type of school in our area to choose from. A classical charter school, religious schools (we are Catholic), a Waldorf school, Montessori, and we have several very highly rated public schools within a 10-15 minute drive of our house. The public schools seem really great and the parents that I've spoken to that have their kids there speak very highly of them, so we are really leaning toward that route for kindergarten.
My biggest concern is how much screen time kids are getting in public schools and whether or not that will harm or help them. We are living in a much different time than when I was in school, so it's a challenge to navigate this. I don't want to fear technology though, because I can see how some of it can be extremely helpful in education. For example, my CPA study software has an AI tool that has been so helpful in helping me understand concepts better. I'd love some reassurance from those of you out there that are more knowledgeable than me about the current state of our education.
Hello all, I’m wondering—is it really worth it and important to attend an Ivy League school? I understand that networking is important, but I’m curious about the impact on salaries. For some professions, there seems to be a salary range; for example, data analysts typically earn between $75k and $220k depending on experience. Finance and software roles also fall within a similar range, between $85k and $250k. Many of my friends work in analytics, software, finance, etc., and none of them attended an Ivy League college, yet they’re making around $150k to $220k. So, I’m wondering: if they had attended an Ivy League school, would they be making more money than they are now? Thanks !
Planning a pivot to AI-focused cybersecurity architecture. Need certs that:

Will AI make traditional certs obsolete? Worth investing?
What would you choose as an international student - Berkeley MIMS (2 years) with a student loan or University College London MSc Technology Management with a Chevening scholarship? Experienced professional 30+ y.o.
Given the Trump factor especially
According to the current era most of the people say that giving homework in schools/colleges is outdated trend, this should be changed. Dear folks what you are thinking about this.
If there is a better place to ask this question, please let me know. I’m currently a rising senior in high school and as the 2024-2025 school year is ending, I want to look into more colleges in Pennsylvania to go. I have a passion for English and education and as time passes, I realize that it’s truly what I’d like to pursue. I would like to teach either secondary education or adult education (although I’m unsure where I’ll end up currently). I love school and the academic environment. Thank you for your time! I hope you all have a nice day.
I am reading "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" and a high command Nazi said this regarding the Slavic people they wanted to subdue. What do you think about this, especially regarding the state of public education now?
Does anyone have a CAT4 test for a student going into Year 3 so we can practice? Please send the test itself or a website which provides it for free. Thank you
Hi everyone I have a couple of classroom teacher interviews for grades 3 and 4. I have been going on a few interviews so far this season, and I am feeling good about many questions but I have a couple of questions that I still want to better prepare for. Those questions are:
How would you answer these with grades 3-4 in mind?
This is how bad it can get without dying.
What advice can you give for someone who will take LEPT this September? Any heads-up from the questions na lumabas?
Most people see math and physics as cold, rigid, and hard to understand subjects ,just formulas and numbers for “smart” people. Poetry, on the other hand, is emotional, creative, and free.
But what if we stopped separating logic and emotion?
What if the same formula that defines energy and mass could also tell a story , a story of life dancing, breaking limits, and transforming the universe?
Take E=mc2E = mc^2E=mc2:
Energy isn’t just a number.
It’s life itself ,swirling, dancing between mass and light.
Mass holds the weight of existence,
while light shatters limits, exploding into infinite possibilities.
This cosmic dance transforms the tangible into the infinite
a reminder that inside even the simplest equation
lies the wild heartbeat of the universe.
By teaching math and physics through poetry, we could make these subjects more accessible and inspire new ways of creative thinking. Logic wouldn’t just be cold calculation it would become a language of wonder, and emotion could push understanding to new heights.
It’s time to rethink how we learn and feel science , not just with our minds, but with our hearts.
E=mc2E = mc^2E=mc2
Energy isn’t just a number
it’s life itself,
dancing wild between mass and light,
breaking every boundary,
turning weight into infinite possibility.
Gravity
Gravity is not just a force,
but a silent embrace,
pulling stars and souls alike,
weaving the universe into a single dance.
Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle
We can’t hold on to certainty
the more we try to grasp,
the more it slips like smoke,
reminding us that mystery
is the heart of all knowing.
The Cycle of Life
Just like a circle,
life bends back on itself
no true beginning, no end,
only endless flow,
like math without limits.
Simple Truth: 1 + 1 = 2
The dream of a unit to become more than itself,
sacrificing in the crossfire of transformation,
to step through the other side of an equation
new, alive, with soul,
just one grain of sand closer to breaking new limits.

Hi! I’m going to be a college student soon and I’m struggling to make ends meet. I’m going to college just months away, and I need financial help to support my future and also my family.
Yes the name in the go fund me may be strange or unserious, but it’s my first time doing this and I have a bit of fear and anxiety of going public. I do not want to take advantage or abuse this community!
If you cannot personally donate, please spread this and share to others. Thank you so much for any future donations or advice!!
First 7 years so primary school you work on your problems then in "highschool" first years (3 years) you discover yourself prepare for the last 2 years which would be you going to university or going into normal jobs. You should also have elite school in physics and mathematics so if in highschool you are top student you may be able to study there for the last 2 years also open doors for more elite universities. Thoughts?

Hello!! Im sorry to bother you all but I was wondering if anybody was willing to complete this short form I made for a school assessment? It is about the influence of class on adolescence.
Can test scores be changed to make a school look better?
Our school is consistently in the top 5 in the district, out of 20 elementary schools. A SPED teacher is telling parents that our school is actually one of the lowest in the district but the school is changing the test scores to make us look better. Many parents have become very worried that their kids are actually below average and are now paying her for in home tutoring after school. I first heard about this over a year ago but in the last couple of weeks there has been a lot of pressure to sign up for summer tutoring with her, so parents are freaked out.
The testing they do is usually done on computers and a third party is responsible for releasing the scores to parents and making a report for the district. The paper based standardized tests are proctored by teachers with a third party observer from another district.
Our district has has a 50/50 split of our principal and vice principal with another nearby school, that school is consistently in the bottom 5 in the district. I have to imagine that the principal would be the one changing scores in her scenario, but he would only be changing them for one of his two schools.
Does this sound like a strange marketing ploy or is it possible that the school is changing all of our scores to hide that our children are failing?
This move is consistent with the current administration divisive policies. Instead of focusing on America as a whole, there seems to be general policy of dividing Americans. The view of generations of educational thinkers in the United States has been that education is essential to maintain our democracy. It is my view, and the view of many educators, that there should be federal standards of learning in the United States.

Excerpts:
U.S. District Judge Myong Joun said the White House's decision to fire more than 1,300 workers in March has prevented the federal government from effectively implementing legally required programs and services. Such changes can't be made without the approval of Congress, which created the department in 1979, Joun ruled.
The Boston-based 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals backed that decision. The court said the administration provided no evidence to counter Joun's "record-based findings about the disabling impact" of the mass firings and the transfer of some functions to other agencies.
"What is at stake in this case, the District Court found, was whether a nearly half-century-old cabinet department would be permitted to carry out its statutorily assigned functions or prevented from doing so by a mass termination of employees aimed at implementing the effective closure of that department," Judge David Barron wrote for the panel of three circuit judges.
The Trump administration on June 6 asked the Supreme Court to let it dismantle the Education Department and fire hundreds of its workers.
President Donald Trump is trying to fulfil his campaign promise to end the Education Department and move school policy to the states.
I dealt with rough start to college dealing with depression. Switched majors a lot and am looking to end my college with a 2.5 gpa. Although my psych major is around a 3.0. What are my options? I’m looking to get a job in the education field.
I'm not from the US and whenever I try to search about educational news, most are related to Trump and I want to see more hmm diverse? news. Any ideas?
Hello parents!
We’re currently developing a 2D adventure game (for PC or tablet) that introduces children aged 9 to 12 to key concepts in Computational Thinking, Media Literacy, and Computer Science. It is primarily designed as a single-player experience, where a child explores these topics through an immersive world featuring rich storytelling, clever puzzles and vibrant visuals. The core idea is that learning happens incidentally: children engage with informatics-related content as they play, without experiencing it as traditional instruction. Our goal is to foster curiosity, problem-solving skills and critical thinking in a playful and age-appropriate way.
We recently submitted the project to a public funding program and were invited to present it at a jury hearing. One of the questions raised was:
“How can parents be actively involved in the game (as an intergenerational game), and how might this improve the learning effect?”
To address this, we’re exploring different design options, for example:
We would very much appreciate your input:
Would you like to be actively involved in your child’s gameplay or do you prefer when your child is meaningfully engaged on their own?
What forms of parental involvement would you find helpful? What would feel excessive or unnecessary? Would you actually play something like this together with your child?
Thank you in advance, your feedback will help us make more informed, user-centered decisions!
How to educate youth to stop blindly following/justifying the celebrities for own stupidities?

Would this be an act of coercion?
Student is told they have to dissect a frog for science class. The student asks for an alternative assignment as the assignment is against their convictions. The student is told no, and that if they don’t dissect the frog they’ll receive a 0. The student refuses and cries the entire class time because they feel they were forced into doing something against their convictions. The teacher sees that the student is visibly distressed yet offers to cut it open with the student but the teacher will hold their hand, clearly seeing the student is visibly troubled and crying and yet insists on the student to perform and complete the assignment. The student continues to cry and again refuses and asks for an alternative assignment but none is offered and they’re told if they don’t dissect the frog, they will receive a 0 grade. No permission slip sent home, no alternatives given. The student refused to participate, was obviously was disturbed and visibly shaken and received a 0. The student felt coerced by the teacher but stood their ground. Would this be considered coercion by the teacher?

The new state law expands ban oncellphone use throughout the entire school day by students in elementary and middle schools. It also establishes a pilot program in six counties that will implement similar, full-day cellphone prohibitions in high schools.
Article I wrote (using AI, but all my own ideas/research) about how I think education may need to change with AI. We need to make school hard enough so that AI becomes a tool students reach for rather than something they can use to regurgitate facts.
TL;DR: AI isn’t ruining education—it’s revealing how shallow and outdated many of our assignments have become. We have a rare chance to rebuild the system around deeper thinking, creativity, and curiosity.
📚 Teachers: Don’t ban AI—design assignments that demand it. Push students to go beyond the first prompt and build something thoughtful.
👨👩👧 Parents: Use AI with your kids. Talk about what they’re creating, why it matters, and how to improve it.
🏫 Administrators & Policymakers: Set clear, safe guidelines that embrace AI use and reward critical engagement—not just memorization.
The future’s coming fast. Let’s build the classrooms it deserves.
If looked into a couple of online courses to improve some hard skills but can never tell if they are any good. Any suggestions?
I started up a platform that can develop new skills and experience from our courses and live lessons created by our instructors.
Not trying to promote anything but just starting up all that after facing a lot of problems in trying to improve my new skills and experience in order do something with my life.
Getting all the right information and instructions to really get the needle moving was a very challenging thing because information was hand to collect and organize from different resources like YouTube, blog article, Google , AI and many others is a bit challenging if you don't even knowing of what you want to learn.
But I came up with my platform to solve all those problems so my main goal this month was to get in 30 instructors to pick the gas starting. As I talk I have almost the goal and the traction is growing smoothly.
So I would like to thank everyone who supports me in the way and if you have skills and get experience you would like to share, You can join us right Now.
TD;DR: The board has consolidated the two county middle schools, which differ significantly in academic performance, and teachers and administrators at the other school have issues with those at the new school due to disciplinary and work ethic differences.
I will preface this by saying that I have been out of my old public school district for the past nine years, which is located in a rural area with approximately 800 students at the consolidated middle school, where students from each school numbered roughly 400 pre-consolidation. Although I no longer attend school, having turned 27 recently lol, my mother, who thankfully retired this year from teaching, has had lengthy conversations with me about the issues the school district and teachers have faced over the past year and it has me concerned.
Overall, I would like to hear others' opinions on this situation and explore potential solutions to alleviate the tension and support the students. I have no power to make or influence anything, obviously, but I am curious if others find themselves in a similar situation and what led to better outcomes.
My opinion on this is that the district has been bleeding money for around a decade now, since all the local coal mines shuttered, it has drastically increased the poverty rates, along with no new job creators. Then, our local power provider shut down the local coal-fired power plant, which resulted in the loss of roughly 200 more jobs, drastically decreasing revenue to the school system. Property taxes are not enough to make up the difference, and the board is trying, but there is no good solution other than to move the schools together rather than build a new school for each middle school due to age. The only darker motive I see is that the scores for the one school are so much lower that by combining them, the schools should have better statistics from a testing perspective. Sorry for the rant.
is anyone here who is in 10th?
