Is the "learning loss" over breaks an illusion?

I wrote an article about this recently, the gist of which is that if knowledge retention from school is about 50% after three years, the relatively small effect sizes of the "summer slide" and pandemic-related school closures should be interpreted as students forgetting what they would've forgotten anyway, after graduation. Since post-graduation retention is mostly what we care about as an educational goal, it's not so much that test scores are worse after summer break, but that they're more accurate after summer break.

In theory, by making courses shorter breaks are also hurting students' ability to learn in depth, and depth also improves long-term retention. But in practice, I think depth is difficult-to-impossible with subjects the student doesn't have an affinity for, and the best way for someone to study something they have an affinity for is, often, the kind of unstructured learning that happens more in summer enrichment activities than school proper.

So, if anything, summer breaks should be longer, with the money saved going into subsidizing optional educational activities and day care over break. Am I missing something?

Hesitation between two master programs

Hi everyone,

I am at a point where I want to study more but can't chose between 2 masters programs:

One is Data science and modelling and the other is Financial engineering.

As you can guess from my two possibilities, I like crunching numbers and math in general, but I can't make a decision.

For my background, I have 2 bachelors, both in Business Administration but one is from a Chinese Uni and the other from a French Uni where I took many finance classes. I am currently in my mid 20s and working in a big4 as a Financial controller.

Can you guys help me on which one to choose for future employment and future opportunities since I think both of these line of work are prey to AI thinning the ranks of workers.

What might be my future job if I decided to major in 2 courses?

Before I start, I just want to say that English is not my first language. So I apologise for any mistake I might make. Here we go. Hello, Reddit! I am still in high school, but I am planning to plan what courses should I take in college to major in. My plan is to major in 2 courses, in Technology and Business. My first plan was to major in Technology 'cause I am more interested to that. But the thought of having a degree in Business is stuck on my mind. If I decided to major in these 2 courses, what might be my job in the industry of Technology and Business? Any suggestions or advice is great. Thanks! As of right now, I am currently studying Python right now and I would like to improve my knowledge in Python.

Got bad grades all throughout school because of severe mental health issues, can I still get into a good uni?

I'm in year 11 and I will be studying seriously this year, I can confidently say that I'll get good grades in the subjects I'll need in my profession at least, but I realize that my GPA is absolutely ruined, i didn't study in school for multiple reasons, I need to get my life together this year and I'm wondering if i have a decent chance of getting into a relatively good university, if not, what other options do I even have?
