Do You work for a nonprofit in educational research?

I'm highly interested in a career after I graduate in educational research. I do not want to teach or work for a university. I want to perhaps start and work at a nonprofit similar to WestEd, SRI International, MDRC. If I started something like this I understand it would take lots of work and knowledge to begin. But if YOU have ever work for a similar organization then you must have some good advice on how this work - hopefully we could discuss or you could reply to this posting with some details.

I am specifically interested in how it works. What is the office environment like, how do you apply for grants, what is an average day like, what types of office equipment and software are used, how do you make initial contact with schools in which you want to conduct research, who would be considered the IRB (each universities have their own).

Thanks. Most other careers have extensive write-ups about what careers are like, however, saying I want to be a researcher and an educational nonprofit, there is not a lot of good information about this. Thus, I am going directly to the source - you. Thank you!
