Has discipline and reform gotten lax in the past decade?

I remember talking to my old first grade teacher about how now they can't even do the "walk*" or give out numbers* or something, which I recall doing back when I was in first grade. Instead she said they could only do positive reinforcement which while positive reinforcement is usually ok I don't see what's bad about walking around a bench for like the whole recess. Ofc, at that age it's bad, but looking back it wasn't so bad.

Come to think of it, I remember how my first grade teacher's assistant reminded us kids once about how good we had it; when she was young they'd give her such a whooping she couldn't sit down for a week. I added that in because it shows how we've changed over the decades.

*walk-had to do a walk around something like a bench for like half an hour or something. *numbers-this was if we didn't do homework or something we would get a number circled and not be able to participate in fun activities or something.
