why are there not more dedicated volunteerism programs in schools?

For a student, sports seem to be the main extracurricular activity. It’s something that requires the most time commitment.

Off school grounds, at least for high school aged students, a job would take a similar time commitment.

I know there are school clubs. But those meet maybe a few times a month for an hour at a time. It doesn’t provide the same level of dedication that a job or being on a sports team requires.

Why isn’t volunteerism a bigger role in a student’s list of possible activities to do? More than a Red Cross club meeting once a month, and going to a hospital twice a year.

It seems like these charities and non profits always need more helping hands, but people are too busy working to help out.

Now that I’m done with college, and working, looking back on it, I wish there was a mote active way of volunteering while I was in school. I would have rather spent 10-15 hours a week or so volunteering at a food bank than being on the bowling or cross country team. To me, volunteering would have been more wholesome and rewarding.
