So, I'm a junior working on a BS in History (nonteaching) and a minor in American Indian History. I'm also taking classes in Lakota Language. After the end of it, all my debt will be about 40k
my original plan was to either get a TEFL and go abroad, or do teach for America and try to work on the rez teaching kids.
However, I've also been looking into masters, and in a perfect world I'd like to get a masters in American Indian history, the closest place is Montana University at 25K per year..but yeah..in a perfect world.
If I stay here in South Dakota I could maybe get a masters in secondary education and then leave to teach somewhere. Or i could pick up a Masters in Reading. I'm very good at reading comprehension and I think I could do good teaching kids to read, it was something that greatly helped me as a kid. I was devouring highschool books in early elementary. Anyhow, staying here in South Dakota, both those masters degrees are 1-year degrees at about 15k a year
I believe I'd be good at teaching, I know the salary isn't all that great, but I think it's enough to be somewhat comfortable. I feel like I could handle small group teaching to kids or the individual meetings and helping them through the phonics and vocabulary. Maybe do a masters in reading and then teach on the rez to kids?
I absolutely suck at math and stem stuff, but my reading ability is a core strength of mine.
It's just been something I've been trying to think about now that I'm halfway through college, the big question of what's next to do, what's my passion?
