Hi everyone,
I have created a post about a student with who I had a problem once . I had really good advices, so I would like to continue to share this experience with you.
So i have met him with a colleague, who is in charge of general authority. I have listened about excuses, so i have just asked him about excuses between the all of three. I have explained exactly how I lived the situation and made clear he agreed with me. Obviously, I'm not naive.
BUT, the other person in charge was not in the same idea as I was, and he didn't really let the student talked and let him explored about he was feeling. Actually I didn't neither. So it was a one way discussion. I am upset with how it happened. Now, it's done and I have to deal with that.
So I think his behavior will continue. I have a class tomorrow with him and I'll let you know (if you want) how things evolve.
Now, I want to anticipate his behavior and I want to make my actions with you before meeting him again.
Start of lesson
By the beginning, I want to him to come to me and to say "Hi!" and shake hand (we shake hand with our students in our school). Last Thursday, I saw him putting football stuff with an educator in a room. I want to engage a conversation about football at first. (First contact => positive).
Afterwards, I want to ignore him a bit, and give consideration and attention towards the rest of the class.
Last thursday, I haven't accepted him in class, and I asked him to do a mock test. I will give him a feedback about this test. Then the lesson starts.
First concerns : I don't know how to react if he starts to shout in the classroom, making noise, or having gestural or verbal obscenities (First test) at the beginning. IMO, I will ask him to stop briefly, and to ignore him if he carries on. What do you think I should behave with his first tests ?
During lesson
Good behavior : as you said, i will reinforce any positive behaviors (not systemically, but 85% of the time) : good answer, positive participation, helping friends, helping me...
Negative Behavior : I think he is a bit bored during the class, because he understands rally quickly. So I'm thinking giving extra exercice or more clever, but I'm really doubtful that may work. He used to shout, or to laugh with his classmates, or to say he is hungry or he tries to sleep in the classroom. At that point, I would have asked him to stop. But I understand I will reinforce his negative behavior. Should I ignore most of the time ? On that point, I'm lost.
Insolent and irrespectuf behavior during the class : On that point, I'm lost as well. I don't understand how I should react. I am thinking to stop the lesson and to have a discussion with all the class about this kind of behavior in general.
In any manner, I will record every behavior he had during the class to have a better understanding of his general behavior.
I have to be honest, this is a bit stressing me out. I know I will have to meet this kind of situation in the future. Last wednesday, I was really stressed, and I could barely sleep in the night. It's the reason why I want to be more prepared, with a clear scheme and cleared strategy. Also, I know I won't sort this situation out in one lesson, but I will need at least two months or more to have a better situation.
Thank you for your support !
