During this virus outbreak, we saw and witnessed many noble acts and bravery. However, we are not living in Xanadu. Unfortunately, we live in a dressed-up Tophet filled with hatred, hypocrisy, lies and fear. Different kinds of buffoonery and atrocities have come out of the shadow, and becoming more and more dominant. Instead of uniting and caring each other, people have chosen to spread lies and fear, hurting others for profits... You name it. As a teacher and member of the young millennials, I am quite sensitive and worried about our civilization.
It may be shocking to say, but our civilization is no longer humanistic anymore; but rather cold, cruel and vicious. Not mentioning the society, even schools are plagued with contraband, bullies, rapes, STDs and crimes... We always believe the juveniles possess goods and decency. Well, some do, you cannot deny that. But that's not always the case. In fact, some of the atrocities and evils displayed by the "innocent" youngsters are unbelievably horrendous. Sometimes I really wonder whether some of my students are humans or not -- They are literate, sharp dressed, and fake smiles hung on their faces all the time. But human traits are nowhere to be found in such individuals; instead, they're some of the most irresponsible and rudest individuals in real life. What's even worse, we are already accustomed to such thing. It is no big deal when some kid gets arrested for breaking the law; it is no longer shocking when some student overdoses and dies at the side of the street... While such tragedies are supposed to be prevented in the first place.
Education should have one main purpose: To nurture and cultivate the students. Are grades, scores and performances the center of education? I guess not. It is easy to teach Shakespeare and give good grades to the students; Teaching them to be humanistic is not. Long time ago, we thought illiteracy was our enemy. But it's not. Our society is full of literate brutes, even many criminals have college degree. Having the knowledge to read and write doesn't really change a person. Clearly, inhumanity is the our biggest enemy. It is time to bring back the humanity back to our society with education. Moral education, character education should be treated and valued seriously. We need humans, not "Calibans" that could read Shakespeare and post selfies on social media.
The first step to solve any problem is recognizing its existence. Of course, we could just hypnotize ourselves and deny it. Unquestionably, one can choose to live in the delusional prosperity, relying on superstition to get relief. We are not living in a wonderful world; but we could if we are brave enough to realize and fix the problems.
Educators, listen not to the idlers. With that humanistic power and ability, light up the darkness like fireflies. If there's only darkness, then you would be the solely light.
