I was always convinced it wasn’t. Then for my GCSE English lit I memorised all 15 poems and have found not only did I earn a 9 (highest grade) but I also still remember them a year and a half on, which is nice.
Also, I find most of the things I learned by recitation and memorisation are the things I can recall on command today. It’s certainly boring— here in the U.K. the first year or two of school was mainly rote learning from what I remember, but how effective is it?
