How do poor schools diminish opportunities for black Americans?

One thing that I commonly hear is that bad public schools diminish opportunities for black Americans. Not being black, I don't have first-hand experience with this, but I hear it so often that there must be some truth to the statement. However, I struggle to imagine how this would be the case. In my mind, any high school diploma is as good as any other for getting a job. Employers interviewing mostly just care that one has one - at least that's what I think.

I can picture that a bad high school might impact college admissions chances, and perhaps students from these schools would be less academically prepared for ACT/SATs, and not going to college would impact one's ability to enter the upper crusts of society, and perhaps even the middle-class. But then again, I also highly suspect that the importance of college is overstated. There are good paying jobs that don't require a degree.

Can someone explain this to me? Do poor school systems have an impact on opportunity beyond college admissions?
