How effective is homeschooling?

I’m not even a teacher but I cannot imagine laymen are often teaching their kids better than actual teachers (assuming they have no education beyond K12), let alone in every subject required. Does the data not support any big difference between homeschooled kids and public school kids in metrics one would consider important? What is the explanation for differences or lack of?
