As a teacher and as an autistic activist, I'm painfully aware of how badly our school systems work for a significant fraction of learners.
Perhaps it would help if more teachers and pupils had some understanding of neurodiversity - that is, the idea that different people's brains work differently, so we experience the world differently, and that doesn't necessarily mean there's anything wrong with us.
I wrote this as a talk at Autscape, the conference by and for autistic people, but I hope it's useful to teachers in general, and anyone else involved in the education system: 'Making education work for the next generation of neurodivergent pupils'.
I'd be interested to know how many of the people here are familiar with the concept of neurodiversity, and for how many it already informs our educational practice. Thank you!
