My kid’s school says she’s doing fine—but something feels off

I’ve been noticing a strange disconnect lately between how my daughter’s school evaluates her progress and what I’m seeing at home. She’s bright, asks good questions, and her teachers tell me she’s doing well. But when we actually talk about certain subjects—basic geography, historical timelines, even reading comprehension—there are huge gaps.

So I’ve been trying to fill in the blanks on my own time. One thing we experimented with (mostly out of curiosity) is this AI phone line that lets kids call in and talk through school concepts. It doesn’t just answer questions—it actually converses, asks what they already know, and adapts based on how the conversation goes. I wasn’t expecting much, but it ended up helping her connect some dots she’d clearly missed in class.

To be clear, I’m not replacing her education with AI. But I do wonder if tools like this might have a role to play in supporting students when the system’s version of “doing fine” leaves critical gaps. Especially for kids who are quiet in class, or don’t speak up when they’re confused.

Anyone else seeing this kind of disconnect? And has anyone used tech—not as a gimmick, but as a support—to help close the gap?
