Technology Lawsuit toward School System

Hope its ok to post here figure being education... looking for some advice... Heres a little run down

I worked at a k12 for a good 20+ years as IT. Became IT administrator etc. Got so good at it and fluent everyone eventually retired/moved on to bigger better jobs so it was just ME for the entire school system for a few years. (I write that part of my history so you can understand WHY Im doing what Im doing and need advice)

The advice is I need is what their doing .... "legal"? Heres the rundown.

I go to alot of places and do auctions etc and buy things broken fix them and resell etc. I notice my old k12 system I worked for is having an auction... a very... very small one. infact. only one item... guess what it is? MY ADMIN IT LAPTOP. Still has old OS on it etc so I know for a fact its not "wiped" and they are selling it complete with harddrive and all... Im going to bid and win it... if my personal information and other information is still on that laptop Im 99.9% sure thats illegal and they are not spose to sell it that way... it requires to be wiped or harddrive removed corrrect?? What legal grounds do I have if I find out my info and all other stuff is still on it and they sold it to the public (Which im going to win it) and I know for a fact thats my old laptop cause theres little tell tell signs on there that proves it mine.
