GED at 25! Any advice?

I’m a 25 single mom of 2! I dropped out of high school after a big trauma happened and I developed a plethora of mental health problems. Now that I finally am getting back on track I want to start the GED process! Unfortunately though, when I dropped out I was only in the 10th grade. Now because of these mental health problems, I am only now starting to learn how to drive and don’t currently have a job. Living with my amazing dad while I get stronger. My question is, what moves can I make online to help with this process? Any websites that are free? We’ve tried the local library but it seems a lot of people are also trying and there is a waitlist!

What are your opinions on no-tech (or low-tech) schools?

I was just reading about the London Acorn School and I strikes me as great!

Everyone says the kids will be horribly behind - but I’m 17 and live in an impoverished area in the U.K. We never really had anything but ancient computers at school and I can’t think of a single person who had anything better than a flip phone until we were about 12.

Technology seems to move so fast and is made so accessible that you can easily learn to use it all without having being exposed to it for your entire life.

Plus I can’t say I’ve ever needed to know how to use anything but word, powerpoint and google for the entirety of my education.

Anecdotal evidence isn’t the best, but I personally think no-tech education is good, particularly for under 14s.

Resources to help a high school junior who wants to hone his writing and analytical skills?

Hi everyone.

One of my kids (aged 15) is very interested in politics, law, etc. He wants to think about a career in that realm, and I think that suits his abilities. But I want to help him hone his reading, analytical, and writing skills. He is a very smart guy, but like many young men his age, he has yet to really develop his intellect and really learn how to learn. I want to help him become a fast reader, to think analytically, to communicate very clearly (esp in writing – his verbal communication is very good) and to be exposed to concepts and methods that will help him in school, career, and life in general.

I have a pretty good background in social sciences (business, philosophy, history, a little law, etc.) so - we are going to spend some time every day (or at least a few times per week) reading an article or chapter, then doing some writing - I figure I will have a question or two ready that will involve summarizing the reading, analyzing it, and/or arguing a point covered in it.

I am wondering if anyone has any ideas about source material. We could go with some online or offline articles, chapters from books or textbooks, etc.

Any help or advice would really be appreciated. Thank you.

Online or On-campus?

I teach college and I get a lot of students who ask if they should go online or on-campus for college. Many don't realize that most brick and mortar colleges also offer online, but there are online only schools. I made a video that I hope will clear up some of the confusion for anyone interested. Should I go to an online or a brick and mortar college?
