Can you Plagiarize yourself?
In college I often used the same essay for multiple classes, or barely edited them. I've taken so many classes where the assignments were virtually identical, so I didn't see the point in having to write the same essay twice...it would just look the same anyhow.
I got caught once with that "Turn It In" thing. I had to explain that I did indeed write it. She ended failing me, and I went to the dean and got a meeting where I proved I was indeed the original writer.
They called in my old professor, who remembered the essay, and at the time had ran it through "Turn It In" without any issues.
The teacher said it didn't matter because it was still plagiarism. However, the dean, and the original professor disagreed. Since I was a 4.0 student (athlete as well) they gave me an automatic A for the class, and I didn't have to attend anymore.
Anyhow, I bring this up often and usually people side with the teacher. What are all of your opinions?

Teachers in the UK: How do y'all teach English Language Learners?
I'm familiar with the guidelines and policies that the US and the state of Florida set down, but I was curious as to how ELL's are taught in the UK. Are they mainstreamed, or put into a separate class? What's the policy for them taking standardized tests?
Thanks, and if you have any resources where I can learn more about it I'd appreciate them!

What should I learn to improve my speaking skills, critical thinking, and assertiveness?
I have a problem with elaboration sometimes. I want to improve my debating skills and reasoning. I want to be more confident, unambiguous and understood.
Sometimes when I ask questions on Quora or something, people ask because they don't understand the question, it's too vague, or ambigous. They say "be specific" or something.
I don't know if my culture has something to do with it so it would probably help if I give my background.
I grew up in a collectivistic, hierarchical, ultra-conformist culture. People are culturally low in self esteem and confidence. People are sometimes aggressive, sometimes passive, and then passive aggressive.
We aren't thought equality. We are exposed to sexism and classicism. We aren't thought individualism/individuality because it's "shameful." We obey hierarchy a lot even if the "upper hierarchy" are assholes.
I'm not "inferioring" my culture. I'm just personally "disgusted" by it.
But not everyone in a culture or society are conformists though. We got activists and so on.
And I also have problems with my childhood history that prevents me from having a healthy self-esteem.
Anyway, what specific subject or topic? Is there a program or a school about this?

Secondary Education Degree in 3 years
Hello. I am going into my second year of college as a mathematics major. However, I am looking to go into secondary education for mathematics. I am taking 24 more classes (4 classes per semester, 6 semesters) before I plan to graduate in 2020. Coincidentally, there are exactly 24 classes I need to take to get this mathematics education degree (including general ed classes). Keep in mind I have not taken a single education class up to this point. My advisor says this is "feasable", but I feel like being a professor himself he is supposed to say this regardless. Do I have a long, tough road ahead of me? Or is this truly doable? Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

Transfer from a liberal arts college in the US to a liberal arts college in Europe (NL)
I'm a freshman at a relatively small liberal arts school in the US. I've been dreaming of studying in a university in Europe where I was accepted but my scholarship did not cover full living costs, therefore I differed my admission til a year later.
I want to transfer to that liberal arts school in the Netherlands which I was dreaming of from my school in the US, as I've been working and earning good money which now allows me to start in the Netherlands.
Is this transition possible from American credit system to European credit system and has anybody done it before?
One important thing to mention is that I'm not a US nor EU citizen.
Looking for insights and useful comments :)

So Thankful For The Availability Of Remedial HighSchools
Hi, My name is u/goodbyelulu and here's my education story and why I'm so thankful I can still get my diploma this late. When I was 10 and in the fifth grade I began homeschooling because I was bullied to the point of suicidal thoughts. I've been In my fair share of online programs and it was probably for the best because I moved so frequently until my last year of high school. That's when I started to give up. Having a single mother meant having to own my schooling and be responsible for finishing it myself. I've had to work full time since I was sixteen though and as most teens do I started partying and doing drugs. When I was seventeen and in my last year of high school it became apparent that I wasn't going to graduate. There was no way, I had slacked off way too much. As well in that year I had met the man I'm now very much in love with and Married to. This all sounds so crazy even to me. I was in high school for five years before I had no choice but to drop out with only 2 credits to graduate. I felt so hopeless. I knew I would be hard pressed to get a GED because I felt like I was way too dumb to get through the math section of testing. To be honest I had given up on myself. Working full time, paying rent and married. I'm 18 and adulting without finishing the biggest milestone of youth. That's when hope came into the picture. I learned of a way that struggling students could finish high school with any schedule they needed. McLain High School by RRCC. A ray of light to get me out of entry level employment. I can get my diploma and finish my last two credits in way less than a school year because of them. I'm so full of gratitude that this institution exists. I can very well say that the low enrollment price and willingness to help people has given thousands of struggling people hope. I was so worried that I was going to be a flunky and not have the career that I'm now extremely motivated to achieve. Thanks for reading this. I wanted to spread the word that places like this exist for people like me.

How would you fix (change) the American education system if given a chance
- Raise Teacher Pay -High Schools will perform more like magnet schools where each shall specialize in a specific subject area -Psychological Testing for all underperforming or extremely disruptive students (Many of them have unidentified disabilities) -Private Tutoring (Preferably Provided by Teach for America participants, as I feel that they shouldn't be given the same responsibilities of a teacher) -If no problem identified for disruptive students sent to an alternative school
- No Homework in Primary Education, Less Homework in Upper Grades
- A standardized curriculum for primary education that identifies what needs to be taught in each grade, but not HOW the teacher teaches it. -Less Standardized Testing ( Only given in exit grades(example: 5th, 8th, 12th)

Post-grad options after a less than stellar academic performance during bachelor's degree?
I earned my bachelor's of science in Biochemistry about 2 years ago. My path to earning my degree was a rocky one. Due to personal issues and a battle with depression, I had poor academic performance and I was kicked out of school. After a year and a half off I got my life together and re-applied to my University and succeeded in finishing my degree with decent grades.
I've now been working in biotechnology for two years and would like to pursue a master's degree program. However, with my 2.4 GPA these programs won't even consider me. Is there anyway that I can get into a master's program now?
I have since earned a certification In biotechnology and earned straight A's. I have so many credits in my record now I can't imagine even raising my GPA to a 3.0.
Are there programs for people such as myself? It may just be that my past decisions will prevent me from the future I desire, but I want to explore all options before I give up.
Thanks for any help that you might offer.

Is there an obsession in teaching with student happiness?
I have high schoolers (16-17) who hang on me like puppies. They'll even fail the class on purpose if I don't show them the requisite level of affection.
If I bring up this is the fault of the parents, immediately people expect educators to pick up the slack. And god forbid if we do not. The vitriol seems misplaced - to expect a student to properly attach in 180 days - that's a recipe for co-dependency.
But just like we warn kids of strangers offering them heroin or a stranger snatching them at the mall (both statistically untrue), we don't teach them the necessity of healthy emotional independence.
Like giving students answers, we give them unconditional love when they're younger and there's 35 kids per teacher, but pull the rug when there's 160 per teacher.
I'm a tough love kinda person. Really, just tough. My experience has taught me that if you become friends with someone who has power over you it's a recipe for disaster. Sure family, but even then they left me high and dry.
Love seems like an empty platitude when I have to fail them - at least many see it that way. "If I cared, I wouldn't do that to them."
Even in the lower grades. If stop drop and roll is vital to their safety if they're on fire and their emotional well-being is vital, then it stands to reason that we should teach them that they are in command of their emotions. It should not be tethered to others.
Others making you feel good is dessert. You won't always get it and dinner (your self view) is what feeds you.
But school isn't built that way. Kids, by design, do not understand cause and effect. Their thinking usually doesn't extend beyond what is in front of them. "You gave me an F". This is default.
If we were able to engender a sense of self efficacy, we might be on track for instilling emotional independence.
John Locke called property a natural right. That feeling you get when you complete a task. Not dishes, but building something and accomplishing.
I propose an experiment. This would really only work for younger grades - and even then, not for all. Create a bulletin board. "My best work". After every project the student assesses whether what's up currently is their best work. If they choose to replace it, the other work comes down.
Four things:
-
Some kids might just replace the work because they can't self assess. This will take teacher intervention.
-
You cannot hang up all of their previous work. The board is the only display of their work. Perhaps they can assess and 2nd and 3rd place work. But limit what's up on the walls.
-

Why don't they have a common sense class?
Im a highschooler & Ik I sound stupid, but I am ranked #1 in my school, so, take that. Theres so much misinformation in America, it's ridiculous. The class would teach basic knowledge that is lacking in the general teens graduating. Skills like this would obviously vary, but I'm thinking stuff like how to debate effectively, how to make general repairs in a home & car, & how to use a financial plan, how to code, as well as controversial areas like the basics of production agriculture & what vaccines really do. It may be a stretch, but I see a need for a class like this, & it would raise IQ by at least 5 points(emphasis on learning how to properly evaluate & debate issues) TL;DR Why is there seriously no (or few) class to teach basic life skills, when there's obviously a big need for it.

What is an electronic Learning Community?
Hello,
I am a graduate student at the University of Rochester studying Inclusion and Students with Significant Disabilities. I am currently collaboratively working on a project examining electronic learning communities (ELC). We have a couple questions for the experts: :)
-
How do you define an electronic learning community?
-
How do you currently use electronic learning communities in your field/job?
and 3. (if you are so inclined) What drawbacks or problems do you see in an ELC?
Thank you!

American Teachers! Please explain to me what the Hell is going on?
Some background quickly: A friend of mine is an adjunct professor at a prestigious, well know university. She was grading a midterm paper assignment and having trouble with it. She asked me to look at one of the papers to make sure she was not crazy. I eventually looked at all 30 papers.
All 30 SENIOR level students failed in my assessment. Most cannot even write english. Half don't know how to use a preposition and worse, an indefinite article. Let's not even describe word usage ("the factors effecting diagnosis factor into the disability factors."). But as for the papers themselves, they include a provided outline to follow. Not one student followed the outline making the papers impossible to grade.
I have to hire these people. If I asked them to write a study or a marketing report on a new product or update a standard operating procedure and this is the level of work provided by a college graduate from a respected university I would have to fire them.
This is the 5th time my friend has taught this course and this class is similar to the capabilities of the other classes. This demonstrates a systemic problem. Please, help me to understand what the hell is happening in education?

Would it help students if schools have classes focusing on puzzles?
I know math is supposed to be the class that trains your logical thinking but I heard some people argue about it being too abstract and hard to apply in real life, particularly the more complex ones like calculus where they say they can't find any real world scenario where it would be helpful.
Logic puzzles on the other hand involve strengths that are immediately recognized in knowing how to apply to the real world. Then sometimes, to add new dimensions to puzzles, math may get involved, which is a nice way to familiarize people how math itself relates to problem solving.
I also believe puzzle classes would also be good for students who are usually bored as these classes can be more of a challenging game and by solving these puzzles they learn and analyze puzzle solving techniques which in turn are problem solving techniques. Ones such as awareness of preconception, elimination, analyzing details or creative resourcefulness. Ones on the TED-ed channel of Youtube has a great variety.
I also believe puzzles can benefit students on a personal level too. Learning not to be judgmental and grasp scenarios that are difficult to understand. These are skills I think many people today sorely lack. Puzzle classes may lead to a very intelligent society in the future and when people understand puzzles well enough, they may even develop more amazing ones that will further our understanding of the abstract world.

I don't believe schools should teach children about the Holocaust every school-year
The more the Holocaust and Hitler are mentioned, the more likely I think children are going to question education and possibly turn into racists / antisemites.
I think education on the Holocaust should be reserved for one year of Highschool, not throughout almost every year of all of education.

We are the creators of a new site for teachers to get school supplies - Ask us anything!
Hi Reddit,
We're the creators of www.mypickwish.com, an easy way for people to donate to the teachers they love.
After seeing how much teachers were spending out of their own pockets to support their own classrooms, we thought they deserved better. So we made a site where teachers can sign up, make a list of what they need, and share their profile with anyone. Their friends and family and donate what they want, and the teachers list will automatically be updated and they'll get shipping and tracking information.
Teachers need more supplies for their classroom. We realize this isn't a perfect solution, but hopefully it provides a useful tool for teachers.
We're here to get your suggestions on how we can improve to better help teachers in need. Ask us anything!

Vintage educational slides / projection movie archives anywhere?
Hello, I was wondering if anyone knew of a place that had vintage educational slide decks and projection movies archived or where I could buy them. I searched eBay and only found a couple sets. I am mostly looking for those from all of <=1980s era. This is for personal use - nostalgic / memory lane. I remember when I was a child that my favorite days in school were those when we would watch slides or a projected movie from a reel. I have searched online and came up empty handed. I don't really care about the subjects of them, I would like to watch as many as possible for fun.
Thanks!

What can be done about a tuition hike?
I don't know if this is the right place to post this or not, so sorry in advance if it's not.
Today, my fellow students and I just got a notice that our tuition will be increasing by more than 10%, weeks before tuition is due. Many of my fellow classmates and I are beyond pissed about this and are trying to figure out something to do beyond simply calling the school and complaining. We think it's irresponsible that the school waited so long to budget and gave students such a short notice. On top of this, the school has raised tuition by more than $13,000 in the last 7 years, and it seems to me that there is an unsettling lack of financial management.
I've tried to look up action that my classmates and I could take regarding this hike, but I couldn't find anything online. Does anyone have any ideas on how to handle such a high tuition hike and how we can actually make a difference fighting this?

Learning
So due to my days as a gamer coming to a quick and saddening close, i decided to invest my spare time to learning, i have a few subjects in mind, but i would like to know what other subjects will help me, whether in everyday life or the particuar areas im learning
The sites i plan to use are: SoloLearn, Lynda.com and Tutorials Point.
here is a list(in brackets is the reason why i'm learning that subject)
-
Music(I have always had an interest in learning Music, but i never truly proceeded to chase after an education in Music)
-
Mathematics(Ok, for clarity, and understand, i am neither kidding or joking, In school, Maths was my WORST subject, i got mostly F's, so i feel a need to properly relearn Maths, right from the beginning at the pre-school level, just so that way I can rest assured I know what i need to know)
-
Physics(I fancy Astronomy, and learning physics is helpful to me understanding more, plus i plan to make a game that conforms to physics)
-
Chemistry(Nothing like another subject i got mostly F's in, as above i'll be using chemistry in aid with my game(i plan to make a game that is scaringly 1:1 with reality on every level))
-
C(I wanna learn this before C++ and C#, This i feel will help me to later learn C++ and C#)
-
C++(Most games nowadays are made in C++, so it stands to reason i want to follow suit)
-
C#(I wanna learn this After C++ to update my programming knowledge with the latest Programming Language within the C family)
-
Java(Only one real reason i wanna learn java, Mineraft, i wanna make minecraft mods and bukkit plugins and even update old mods and plugins)
-
Python(Not something i WANT to learn, but i see as a convinience thing)
-
Adobe Premire Pro CC(Nothing wrong with me broadening my current Video Editing Skill Set)
-
Adobe Photoshop Pro CC(Useful to have this skill, especially if i plan to make a game and its textures all alone(i can't afford to hire people to do the other game making tasks))
-
Autodesk Maya(I seem to enjoy making models and animating, so from Sketchup to Maya
-
Blender(So many years i have wanted to learn Blender, nuff said)
-
Sound Design(Useful for when one is making a game)
-
Digital Graphics Design(Useful for when one is making a game)
if any other subjects will aid me in the subjects above or in everyday life, i appreciate the feedback

Community colleges along atlantic coast?
I'm looking to move to the east coast and continue my education there. I'm drawn to the Atlantic coast, especially the Mid Atlantic and the east in general, having lived on the pacific coast my whole life and never having been easter than Ohio. From my research, there's few cities and towns along the whole of the Atlantic coast that are big enough to harbor community colleges. But having only researched towns, I'm sure I missed many community colleges that may have been outside the border or a short commute from the town itself. Surely there are community colleges along the Atlantic coast in beautiful locations. Does anyone have knowledge of any?
Preferences:
-Scenic
-Quaint downtown w/ restaurants, coffee shops, a theatre
-Preferably at least a small arts or music scene/community
-20 minutes or less from coast
-40 minute or less commute to school
-School with a baseball team
-Not too harsh of winters, as playing baseball in freezing weather can be pretty awful
-Less than 2 hrs from a largish city
These are just ideals. Only ones I really need is a baseball team and to be near the coast, and maybe a little charm.
Thanks for any and all help!

What school or university may be using iPad most?
I've been looking for schools, universities, and all educational institutes where may be using iPad for studying, research, and teaching purposes.
I know that iPad in education is kind of going down, but I still believe that iPad should be used more often in many other fields like education.
I welcome all answers that will help me understand what educational institute should I reach accordingly.
I have found Flexcil. It's an iPad and I really like it. I promise that I will find a good case for them to prove themselves that it is actually helpful for studying and students actually really like it.

As someone who has recently changed schools, i decided to tell you all my story of, why public school failed me.
So, it all began when I first started Kindergarten and, they put me in special ed. Because I was just a tad bit on the Autism spectrum. I just went ahead and, dealt with it for five years I knew even back then it wasn't healthy to start talking about teachers and, how the school could actually teach and, help me but, I was never invited to any of the meetings I never wanted to go to the principals office (Mostly because, I was taught it was a very bad thing to go there.) Then there was the counselor the school basically restricted that option from me because I was a bit pudgy. Thus I was stuck in special ed sure it gave me some time to get homework done but, things sort of clashed as every minute I was in there I would hear someone getting in trouble. Thus, I really did not get much work done so, the school system did the next best thing put me in another tier of special ed. Which meant more screaming and, yelling. Now on to my personality, I'm the student that doesn't really socialize and, focuses more on working on projects and, studying the arts. That's how I have always been. The students at my school were more focused on running and, playing and, me well you would see me sitting at the very top of the play ground thinking of ideas. Now I'm not saying I rejected playing with anyone in this stage of my life. If someone asked me if they wanted to play a game I said "Sure." Then, I would spend my time doing what they wanted to do. If anyone wanted to talk about, what it was like at school I would listen and, talk with them. It was very hard to focus back in that time because, of the teachers screaming and, such. The teaching was very straight forward and, it didn't feel like someone was teaching. Up to Middle school by this point, I was doing ok. Nothing was really wrong until Middle school really started. Let's just start with P.E, I loved P.E before, Middle school it was just fun horse play. Now it was more screaming and, back stabbing. The teachers were even worse or, uh, trainers or, P.E teachers (It's your preference.) The screaming and, the pressure was cranked up to eleven. The next thing was the choir, oh, boy this one oh, this one.....was awful, You lower your pitch one dB and, you get written up. I actually got detention from this class because I came to class late because I needed to use my inhaler for my asthma. Let me get to why I couldn't tell a counselor or, the principal about any of this well, I did and, nothing, nothing happened so, that was awful. Now let's get to the teachers I worked with both my reading teachers were excellent they were teaching at, a pace that can be relatable to most people. My second reading teacher was different from most kids as my first reading teacher (The one from 6th grade) Noticed that I was really into acting and, that I would always do performances if we had the time. So, I got signed for something different the school was trying to do an acting class that had some reading elements with it. This had to have been my favorite class. We would all do performances. My English teachers both of them were alright because, I got to express creativity but, there were some flaws. Math.......I don't even want to dwell on it. Science my first teacher had a great personality. The second, however, well most of my teachers did their jobs wonderfully. It was my next point which I shall discuss now the students....where to begin most of them did not really wish to work with me which was quite saddening and, instead of actually talking with their mouths they used a little silver screen they have in their pocket aka a look at me I could technically be called a swiss army phone. Yeah, some of the things that they would joke about were just.....akward. One kid during class would randomly moan. One would shout out the names of things I'm not going to go into detail with :. Most of them considered me the weird kid because I actually knew some Shakespearian tales. Now grades I always got C's and, F's only one A. Special Ed. The class was even worse all the screaming was back again and, the teacher treated me like I was a baby or, someone's dog. It frustrated me so, much that this time I whined and, tried my hardest to get out of there I did but, they sent a second math teacher this one was.....I really don't want to say bad as I consider all my teacher's people who have lives and, family but, this person still treated me and, everyone in this special class like a dog. So, how did I change all this because my grades now are almost straight A's, stay tuned? It all started when I was fed up with school I researched and found another school it is an online school so, I went to go see how much it was. It wasn't a dime so, I begged to go there and, I made it. (I'm pretty sure most of you have been to college?) It was like making into your favorite college. I started learning there the teachers were very nice and, there was still social interaction I found where everyone who was like me was at and, so, I began learning here I helped students who have things such as anxieties, fears, emotionally distressed. I'm kind of considered the schools 2nd counselor. Special ed was handled differently they actually listened to my concerns. Did something about them instead of saying sure. My math grade improved tremorously. I swear it's because I changed my learning environment. Everything is so, much calmer. So, if you listened and, finished reading all of this I applaud you! Thank you for taking the time to hear me out. If you did agree or, disagreed with my opinion let me know. I will be happy to get back to you ciao - Mike.

My former high school is no longer requiring physical education for fit students, instead requiring them for unfit or overweight students.
My former High School has changed policy for PE, requiring only unfit or overweight students to participate.
At the begining of every school year, all students are required to pass a physical test to access whether they will need PE. This is required for grades 9-12. The tests include height/weight accessment, pushups, situps, curlups, and a mile run test. If the student passes the test, they don't need PE, if they fail they will be enrolled in PE class. If a student continues to fail the physical yearly, they would essentially require PE up to 4 years.
The goal of this new policy is to make PE a potentially judgement free course, by requiring the class only for unfit and overweight students. It also modifies activities around unfit and overweight students so they won't have to perform excessively strenuous exercises that fit students can accomplish.

Makerspaces in Highschool: Viable?
Question for you guys, I have started a company, InventorspaceXYZ, that aims to put makerspaces in high schools.
Do you think this is particularly viable? I saw a need for it in my school but then again I lived in a upper-middle class neighborhood where we could worry about things like this.
What kinds of things do you thing would be attractive to both schools and students in a makerspace?
I would really appreciate it , if you could give some feedback.
