I have taken classes in college where the professors don't require us to get textbooks. This is better than telling us to get the textbook from the website they give us.
These professors usually have the reading content online so we can print it out ourselves. This way, we can access them at our own time. The three times this happened was in my first semester, I took ART 1012 Art Survey II. The professor told us we don't have to buy any textbook as the articles are on blackboard. When the professor tells us that we have an assignment due, we just go to the blackboard, download the articles, and print them out.
The second time this happened was in my second semester, I took BUS 1000 Introduction to Business class where the textbook is optional. I realized that I can pass the class by listening to the professor and review the slides.
The third time this happened was in my third semester, I took PHI 1500 Principles of Philosophy where the professor have the reading online. In the reading, he adds his notes, which puts emphasis on those important topics.
The third time this happened is in my fifth semester where I took physics. The course does not require any textbook, buy any college physics textbook will suffice. In the class, I copied my Professor's notes. I got a D because it was confusing.
In some cases, the textbook is unnecessary, as I can understand the course better by visiting the professor, like what happened when I took MTH 2610 Calculus I and ECO 1001 Microeconomics the second time. The professors were laid-back, as they provide us the questions.
