I have lived on my own since I was 17 with no support from parents. My former school accepted my emancipation documents that were filed four months after I turned 18. I attended this school in Indiana for 2.5 years before I had to move to Oklahoma for personal reasons. I took a year off of my education to gain in state tuition in Oklahoma. I attended last fall and filed the FAFSA the same way that I have been doing for the last three years. After the semester was over, right as financial aid dropped, they hit me with a notice stating that because I incorrectly filed the FAFSA I would have to meet with them to discuss my options because I now owe the $9,200 from last semester. Documents that I gave them to prove my emancipation: Official documentation of emancipation from the state of Indiana, signed 4 months after I turned 18. Copies of my lease agreement, statements from my payments from work
The options that they gave me:
Option 1. I have to have three letters written from family or friends talking about a rough past I have had with parents and specifically talking about abuse from my parents. My mom had a neglect case against her but it was dropped and my dad works in the healthcare profession. My older brother and I dont talk to my dad at all, hes manipulative and he did physically hurt us but theres no documentation as he was the only money maker in the house hold. All i have is testaments that family could give me and I dont want to go this route. Its made me redig things up that have been hurting me for a long time.
Two. I file paperwork for unsubsidized loans. I have to pay off the $9200 within a month or it gets 5% interest from the school each additional month. I only make $23,000 a year after taxes. I don't have the money to pay the $9200 off immediately. The school basically said that if I can have parents sign a document stating that they refuse to help me. This will give me $7500 in student loans to pay off the majority of the $9200. I would have to pay the rest of the difference myself. While also starting to make payments on the loans. They would require me to resubmit this documentation every school year to get unsub loans.
ALSO: I am a senior. I have literally 2 semesters left.
The initial email:
Dear Oxymoroniva:
We are writing to you regarding your 2017-18 financial aid status. You have required documents requested to verify your federal and state financial aid eligibility. We have not yet received those requested documents.
You can view the required documents by logging into your account at _____. If you need help checking these requirements, you can find detailed instructions here.
Please submit these required documents to our office no later than Wednesday, April 4, 2018 (WE HAD THEM EXTEND IT TO END OF APRIL AS I AM STILL GETTING DOCUMENTATION) . If we do not receive the required documents by that date, we will need to cancel your federal, and possibly state, aid for the 2017-18 academic year.
If this occurs, the amount of aid that will be cancelled will be $9,144, which will display as a charge on your Bursar account. This charge could result in an enrollment hold being placed on your account, as well as significant finance charges should the amount not be paid within the month.
We understand the importance of financial aid to your education and want to assist you in any way feasible. If you have any questions, please contact us by email at financialid@school.edu or by phone at ______ and a member of our professional staff will be happy to answer your questions.
Sincerely,
Financial Aid Adviser
Any recommendations? I have had two meetings with the school and no one will help me other than telling me these are the letters that I have to have.
