Itemized tuition may be the solution to an imbalanced university system.

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word “College”?

Modern University has shifted the balance between education and lifestyle too far in the wrong direction. While education is still a major part of the college experience, I fear it’s not the top priority of students in the system. Most every student will argue against that point, but in action many (certainly not all) students don’t take education as seriously as in the past. This is not a dig on students. I’m simply drawing attention to the ‘extras’ that you’re sold (and required to pay for) when attending university.

Universities have created a world for their attendees that go far beyond education. That includes lavish recreational centers, immaculate stadiums, and expensive living facilities that weren’t conceivable 50 years ago. Coaching staff and administrators are paid outlandish salaries. At the same time teacher wages miss the mark, and tuition costs continue to rise. All of this is supplemented through debt and the promise that an education is more than worth the price.

Itemized tuition in which non-education related expenses are optional would allow students to save money. Low income families would only have to take loans for the part of university that pays dividends. Everyone would start to think hard about what it University really means, and what they’re willing to pay for.

Could itemized tuition be the answer?
