What do you do when a student who has threatened you returns to class?

A few weeks ago, said student threatened that she would “fess me up”, which is slang for a physical threat. This student and I have a generally good relationship, so when I privately asked them to step in the hallway if they needed to be on the phone, which the student has done many times before with no problem, I was not expecting to feel unsafe. They have a history of cursing at multiple teachers and have been involved in a few fights.

I was a witness at their hearing today and the student was present and heard my testimony. They are contending that the language used was not a physical threat.

What do I do if/when this students returns to class? I think that it’s possible to get back to having a positive relationship, but I just want to make sure I’m anticipating as many scenarios as possible.
