Fed up of being judged for not going to university.

I’m not sure if anybody else is in the same boat..but I’m fed up of people making assumptions about my intelligence based on my academic qualifications.

I’ve made mistakes, I’ll admit that. I didn’t listen to teachers when they talked about the importance of university. When I was 16 worked hard in school, went to college and worked hard. But after all was said and done, when I was 18 life slapped me in the face a little bit and I found myself working full time to pay for a place to live, food, my car and general bills. Not complaining, just this is the way it is and I got on with it.

Worked a couple of dead end jobs, but within the last year or so I’ve worked my way up with the company I’m employed by and I’m now an Application software analyst, working my way towards software engineer through on the job experience rather than academic education. The thing that really gets me is the amount of snobs who think that because they’ve graduated with a 2:1 degree in marketing or something that they’re better and smarter than I am. Yeah of course you’ll know more about marketing than I do but why does your degree in this singular subject automatically make you all knowing in every other subject compared to me?

I’m not speaking about every single person who went to uni, I’m happy for you and I’m happy about your academic success. I’m just venting I suppose. A few people in my job have sort of automatically assumed that I’ve been to university, and I’ve felt in the past I’ve been snubbed or disregarded by some of them when they’ve learned that I’m not university educated. It makes me feel bad, and it makes me feel like I’ll never amount to anything because of a few silly life choices I’ve made when I wasn’t much older than a child.

Success is not just for university graduates.
