Is there compelling research Demonstrating the benefit of more technology in elementary school education?

In particular I mean like young kids (age 5-9) playing educational games on ipads or things like that in the classroom.

My kids' school district is all excited about how they are getting more ipads. I get that kids LOVE them. And I would even understand that teachers would love them. But is there any data showing that they are beneficial?

My uninformed old-man gut feeling tells me that we should be trying as best we can to limit screen time for young children, even if it's "educational".
