My sister is currently substituting at an eastern Canadian middle school. She is Asian, but was adopted just after birth and has spent virtually her whole life in Canada. It's more than likely that she's the only Asian teacher in our education system, and today, during a sixth-grade class, a student (probably in response to something she heard behind her) blurted out "you eat dog?" She told the girl that it was an inappropriate question, but I was wondering if anyone might have suggestions about how to deal with this kind of thing, as this isn't the first and probably will not be the last incident of racial commentary while substituting. Any ideas would be appreciated.
