My child has started a new school and today was our first school assembly. Prior to entering the hall the parents were asked to line up with men at the front, women and children behind. This is for cultural reasons. This rule is of Maori tradition (our indigenous people of New Zealand). The reasoning is that the men go first to protect the women and children. In general I love that the school embraces the maori culture and that my children will be familiar with the language, culture and traditions. My gripe is that it split up all of the families. Tradition is not always the best way.
It felt outdated and seemed to lack a bit of common sense.
All of the mums were left at the back having to look after the kids. One women had two toddlers and a baby. I decided it would be unlikely I would get a seat being at the back of the line and I really couldn't be bothered having to wrangle both of my little kids by myself so I left. What are your thoughts on this policy?
