How Blockchain Can Improve Education

The blockchain which has gained fame over the last few years for its unrivaled cybersecurity capabilities, has started to see use in various ventures that take security seriously, including finance and healthcare. The potential uses for the blockchain, in any case, extend far beyond its current applications and could make a big difference in classrooms one day. Education is a sector that is just as significant as healthcare and finance, also, there are lots of areas inside this sector that could be improved utilizing technology. The market for edtech is developing rapidly, and is evaluated to reach $93.76 billion all around by 2020. As of now, instruments like computer generated reality experience also, customized learning with artificial intelligence are helping to improve learning outcomes for students at all levels. Smart classrooms aren’t too far off, and blockchain innovation may turn into an integral part of schools everywhere throughout the globe in a couple of years. In any case, by what method will this framework help administrators and students? To comprehend the potential effect of blockchain in the instruction framework and anticipate how this innovation will affect educators and students, it's useful to know how different sectors have utilized it to improve their procedures—and how schools may one day emulate their example.

Employing blockchain security protocols in higher education has its other uses as well—namely defending employers against people who claim to have a degree, but really don’t. Unfortunately, people have been known to lie about their degrees and qualifications to employers, claims that are difficult to verify under current systems. When students enter the workforce, blockchain could also be used to help assure employers that potential candidates fresh out of school have the qualifications that they claim on their resume, by storing that information in a secure ledger. The area of record keeping and the way blockchain can improve on current models goes beyond security. As said on an article, One interesting potential is the ability to organize and verify diplomas on the blockchain. With that it is easier to keep track of and store information, the blockchain could be used to enhance library and information services in schools. Though few libraries have started experimenting with blockchain technology, at least one school has received a substantial grant to begin the discovery process. The blockchain use in the education space is still very new and unexplored, there are a lot of unanswered questions. What is clear, however, that the possibilities are endless. Technology developers and school administrators must work hand in hand top secure the future of the students

Can we turn this sub into the Education policy sub that it was meant to be?

The majority of posts I see here are people asking for career and educational pathway advice. Surely there is a better sub for that - that either exists or can be created (“r/careeradvice” or “r/educationadvice” for example?).

We are at a pivotal moment in education in many ways, with much to be discussed at the national state, and local levels (especially with an upcoming election). I would love to see this sub become what it was destined to be (per its description).

Just a few ideas off the top of my head: Daily pinned threads for Ed news Themed threads to discuss different facets of education policy AMAs with Ed Policy experts / key decision makers Moderation to keep posts on the topic of education policymaking

Thoughts?

Sincerely, an educator and policy wonk who really wants a proper forum for policy based discourse

What undergrad should I pursue?

I'm an international student applying to canadian unis for my undergrad. I am mostly interested in math and physics and am studying chem as well. I plan to study something in STEM, work for a few years and then get into entrepreneurship cause my father will fund me as he owns multiple huge businesses and is a very influential man. Keeping this in mind what should I study? I don't have any specific plans other than a passion for STEM. (I am generally at the top of my class when it comes to Math, physics and chem.)

My school forced me to pay and attend non academic activities on a weekday

Last sunday, I am forced to attend school 7:30, a 15 hour school variety show with talentless contestants and a "dinner" that is plain and doesn't even fill your stomach, forced to pay 3.50$ for it, get another 3$ fine if I don't attend. Also if you don't attend the 1 week school festival, you have to buy 15$ plus worth of school supplies to be donated to the poor, and you have to buy these from a department store yourself. Everyone in these activities are very bored, unsatisfied and waiting for the day to end, we'd rather much spend the day playing a computer or a phone, can't wait to go home. I know everyone will think "1 week school festival! Holy shit!" but it's not as even half as fun and memorable as the school festival you see in Japanese school festivals.

School principals, not formulas, should decide how to spend education dollars

Link: School Principals Should Have More Say In How Education Funding Is Spent

A common myth is that principals are like CEOs of their schools, with authority to make key decisions and strategically deploy resources. The reality, though, is quite different. Principals typically are treated like middle managers, with little control over the $694 billion in annual U.S. public education spending. Instead, decisions often are made by legislators and district-level bureaucrats, who are far removed from students and classrooms.

This is problematic, in part, because research suggests that limiting school-level control over budget decisions creates inefficiencies. Studies show providing principals with flexibility can better align spending with school priorities. After all, principals typically know what’s best for their students, and effective leaders have been shown to have a substantial effect on student learning.

It’s time for state legislators and school district officials to recognize that principals know what’s best for students by giving them greater autonomy over spending decisions. With education spending on the rise, now is a great time to do so.

Need help with how to address the district with how a class is structured.

I'm on mobile so I apologize in advance for the formatting.

I teach Spanish in a district in Metro-Atlanta. This is my second year as a teacher and I was given a class that everyone in my department avoids like the plague, Spanish for native speakers. It used to be a fantastic high level world language class until demographics began to change. In the past the school would have a good amount of students with Hispanic/Latino cultures and backgrounds who were also fluent in Spanish. That has changed. We still have a good amount of latino students, but they don't necessarily speak any Spanish. These students operate at a level one or lower fluency, but are placed in the Native Speakers class because of their background and last name.

I have a huge problem with this as not only does it seems discriminatory on the basis of race and national origin, but we are also doing a disservice to the students by placing them in a high level class they are destined to fail. Not only that, there could be students with non-lstino backgrounds who could be fluent in Spanish and they are not placed in the class because their last name doesn't fit the description.

I have brought up my concerns to administration and they were dismissed by telling me I am supposed to differenttiate within the varied language proficiencies. Now I am a relatively new teacher, but as far as I know, differentiation is used to challenge or support students within the same level, not to teach 4 different levels within one 50 minute class period. The school has no real requirements for this class. No proficiency test. As long as your name is Hernández you are placed in this class without a say. I have been tasked to keep the Latino students isolated in this class for the entire year and then make a determination of what level they should go to afterwards. Administration's reasoning for this behavior is that it would be unfair for a fluent Spanish speaker to be at the beginners level, but many of them are truly beginners. I have a French last name, by this logic, my kids would be enrolled in a francophone class with complete disadvantage. I've decided to bring this up to my World Language director in my district since my school refuses to appropriately place students in the correct level. What should I say? Has anyone had a similar experience?

Article: " Wealthy parents giving up guardianship of their kids to qualify for financial aid, report says. ProPublica said it found dozens of parents exploiting a legal loophole to save money on their children's tuition at the expense of low-income students."

SS: I thought people in here would find this interesting.

Wealthy parents in Illinois are giving up legal guardianship of their children in order to "scam" universities into qualifying them for need-based financial aid, ProPublica Illinois reports.

In a report released Tuesday, ProPublica said it found dozens of parents, many of whom are doctors and lawyers, exploiting a legal loophole to save money at the expense of low-income students.

Executing the plot is rather simple once a family gets an attorney’s help. In the last years of high school, parents give up guardianship of their children to family members or friends. This allows the students to declare financial independence, so when they apply for college, their financial needs are judged without consideration of the parents' income. Most of the guardianship cases were executed by two law firms in the Chicago suburbs, the report found.

BS in Political science or Finance?

20y old, currently serving in USAF intelligence. I have recently completed my military associates degree and am now in the process of applying to UMUC.

I am considering Majoring in Finance with a minor in poly sci or majoring in Political science with a minor in finance.

My goal is to have a degree that can be applied to more than one specific career field, because I’m not sure if I would like to stay in the military or separate after my contract is up and pursue a job as a govt contractor.

I have a small passion for investing and making money work for me which is why I’m leaning toward the major in Finance.

I’m wondering if anyone has much insight to the applications of these different degrees, or if someone is in a similar situation as I am and can maybe point me in the right direction. Thank you in advance!

Question to all the elementary teachers here...

Do you folks use Math games in your classroom - things like Prodigy, Dragonbox games, and others?

If yes, what do you like most about the ones you use? And what are things you wished existed that don't exist yet?

And if no - why? Do the current ones fall short in some way, or are there other reasons (not required/never thought of them/not really helpful in learning, etc)?

What do you guys think about boarding schools, from a development persepective?

I was just reading this article about mistakes people make with boarding schools. I went to a boarding school, so the line about 'blindly following tradition' really hit home with me. I don't think I went to the school that was best for me, I think I went to the place that had been best for my father - who is a very different person.

Now that I'm some years out of school, I just don't know if I believe that boarding is good for a child, in any situation.

What are your thoughts?

Is it a bad idea to take one class from University of Phoenix?

I am a student at Drexel University and I cannot fit my final Anatomy and Physiology course into my schedule unless I take it at another school during my co op. Since the class would be online it would give me flexibility while I am working a full time job. Drexel does not offer night classes for Anatomy and I am still unsure if Community College of Philadelphia offers night classes for this. I know UOP is not considered a legitimate school by many employers (and im assuming grad schools as well), but I need the credit to graduate. Does it look that bad if I only take one class from this school?

Blended Classroom Teachers of Reddit

We are instituting a new program at our school this year, and many of our teachers are freaking out (they will get over it). What I am needing help with is lesson plans for blended classrooms. Do any of you have templates, links to ideas or any thing that can help me? We have inservices and pre-planning starting this week, and I would love to have some things to take to my coworkers to make them feel better about this whole process. I am working on some other things to help this integration more smooth for all involved, but any help you can offer will be very appreciated and helpful!

Is there a site that lists universities for a certain course on a global level?

I'm researching potential universities I want to aim for, and haven't decided on any one country to further my studies in. I have decided on my course, and location isn't something I'm worried about, are there any websites that can help me look for a university abroad?

Which is more important? Undergrad or grad school? Can you switch focuses entirely?

About to graduate. I had planned forever to go to medical school but over the years I’ve decided t may not be right for me. Just for work life balance, etc. I majored in psychology (and neuroscience minor, my school doesn’t have a neuro major) and music performance. That was great for pre mes because it made me unique for applications. And i do love music. And neuroscience is a passion of mine (I’ve never been a social psychology person. This was just the closest i could get to neuroscience).

I have taken all the classes for premed and I have a 3.97 GPA. Through my college, despite my psych major, most of my classes have been biological. I looooooove chemistry. And orgo. And biochemistry. And GENETICS. If I had to do it again, I would have been chemistry and bioE double with minor in music but so it goes.

I think about going to grad school for bioengineering or genetics (or both!!!). I have tons of ideas but feel like I don’t know where to put it. How to accomplish these ideas.

I just wonder how bad I’ve fucked up with my majors. Am I stuck with what i have? Would i have to go back to undergrad or can I go on to grad schools to do a kinda 180 and learn so many new things? Will I not be taken seriously with what i have?

University internship

I have no idea if this is the best place to ask this, but here I am.

I am a university student, just starting third semester. I study mechanical and electrical engineering.
In our 6th semester we have an optional Internship, which i plan to take.

I am going to get a student Job soon which is relevant for my study (10-15 hours). I was wondering if anyone would advise against trying to do my internship at said company, or if i should see if i can get off my student job for a semester and do the internship at another company.

On the other hand i was considering not taking the internship at all, and just finishing the education half a year earlier. As it seems my student job will be with the intentions of full time hiring me when i finish university.

Well, theres still one and a half year until i have to make the final decision about the internship.
I would just like some on your opinions on the matter.

And if there is some subreddit that would be a better fit for such a question, please do inform me.

Webinars Are an Effective Learning Experience

While this might seem counter-intuitive, he U.S. Department of Education conducted studies on webinar effectiveness and found that students who attended online classes had, on average, better performance than students who attended face-to-face classes.

There are plenty of elements that account for this kind of disparity in terms of performance. For instance, online classes offer playback from the live recording, screen sharing sessions, chats, file sharing, and many other features that bolster the learning experience and keep the students more engaged in the material they are learning. When engaged in a webinar, students are in a better place to effectively understand the lesson, thereby performing appreciably better than those attending traditional classes. Read More

Who teaches college professors what to teach? Where does that information come from? How do we ensure companies don't manipulate the curriculum the people teaching us are taught?

I was looking into the overprescribing of medications to children with ADD and People who aren't considered clinically depressed, and I realized medications were originally looked upon as something you try when nothing else works.

I mean, you are getting pills that you may be on for the rest of your life, it makes sense to explore many other avenues before jumping into SSRI's or other meds.

I remember going to the doctor at 15 and explained I was low on motivation, and get very little sleep. I was expecting to get useful information on ways I can fix this, or get some blood work done or something. I Instead I got immediately referred to a psychiatrist.

2 days later I tell the psych I can't sleep and have low motivation, he immediately wants to put me on SSRI's and adderall. "But my lack of sleep is a big issue, wont adderall make it worse? He says "you are already not sleeping much anyways, it cant make it much worse."

"But isnt adderall addictive and not good for you?" This guy proceeds to try and tell me they aren't addictive, and lack of motivation stems from a depletion of natural adrenaline. I walked out with my mom. Apparently this guy thought I was a fucking moron, or he was taught wrong. "I'm 15 years old for crying out loud, my brain is still in the process of developing" I thought.

This makes me wonder, what associations are responsible for teaching teachers? Who taught this guy? Do companies financially fund these teacher teachers? Because it would make sense why so many doctors immediately want to put people on pills, what if pharmaceutical companies are playing a part in what in the circulation of curriculum?

This is not meant to be an "Is IT a cOnSpIraCy?" Post. I am not against anti depressants. But I feel like this is an issue that is very complex and the public doesnt get to have the full picture. How do we ensure pharmaceutical companies dont weasel their way into altering our education for profit?

I am rejected on German universities. Any advise ?

I have sent my transcript of grades and i received a confirmation email and after about 10 days i sent my diploma via post later because my high school delayed it and i didn't receive a confirmation email. That is the answer i got. Do i have any chance getting a positive feedback by appealing?
This rejection letter was sent to me by Uni Duisburg Essen.

I have got this email:

Thank you for your application and the enclosed documents.Your application for admission has unfortunately been rejected. The certificates you submitted as proof of education do not entitle you to study your chosen subject or take part in the preparatory German courses. You were therefore unable to be included in the admissions process.
Right of appeal: You may appeal against this decision within one month of receipt. Written appeals must be lodged in German to the Administrative Court of Gelsenkirchen, Postfach 100155, 45801 Gelsenkirchen.

Why Flipped Learning Can’t Replace Good Teaching

Flipped learning is a well-established approach to education that has been trending upward for more than a decade.  In a flipped learning classroom, students learn basic content at home through videos of lectures and/or reading assignments. This then allows the teacher to have a  more flexible classroom time dedicated to in-depth exploration of subject matter through discussions, experimentation and/ or hands-on learning. Where to find general application scholarships?

Hello everyone, I'm planning on attending a coding bootcamp soon, and it's quite expensive for me ($20k). I've been looking for scholarships to apply for in order to help pay for tuition, but all of the scholarships I'm finding are only program specific (meaning if I'm not attending that bootcamp then I can't apply). Furthermore, the majority of scholarships are geared for increasing diversity in coding by being specifically for women, LGBTQ, minorities, etc., which I love and super support but, as a straight white guy, I am not eligible for. I'm just wondering if anyone knows of any resources where I might be able to apply for a few scholarships? Any little bit will help! Or if anyone knows of any other ways to help with the cost of further education I am open to advice. Thank you very much!

Questions about being an adjunct instructor for a CC in the USA

So there is a slight chance I might be able to be an adjunct instructor at a local CC. I was wondering a few things.

  1. How much does an average adjunct make per credit hour for a CC?
  2. How much time does an average adjunct spend working per semester or per class?
If I do this I most likely will be dealing with 3 credit hour classes. I know that means I will be there for at least 45 credit hours for when the class starts to end. But I don't know about after/before.
  3. Does adjuncts get paid per course or class?
Like say if they want me to teach xyz, and that course if aviable 2 times a week in 2 different classes. If say the course was 3 credit hours and I would get $1k for 3 credit hours. Would I only get paid the $1k if I teached both, or would I get $2k?
  4. How much say do you have on the classes you teach?
Yes I know you can only teach what is aviable. But can you apply to anything within your field? Or are you forced to only teach a given topic until you prove yourself?

Working while doing a masters degree?

Hi,

I am a relatively recent university graduate who had trouble finding a job for 2 years after I graduated with a 2:1 from a respected university. I finally got an offer with a very well respected company and have been there for just over a year. However, even though there will be a lot of work for me there, I don't feel like it's the particular avenue I want to continue down for my career, so I've applied to do a masters degree at the end of September. I am going to inform my boss tomorrow, and have already informed my recruiter that I'm "considering" doing it.

The masters course is full-time (technically), even though it is 1 week of 9-5 lectures, then 3 weeks off (reading time, I guess). The course is related to my undergraduate degree, so not a complete departure. I am spending all of my saved money from this year of work on this course and so would like to continue working at this great company in the meantime, as a part-time employee. My role is very flexible as I simply observe specific work processes that have been and always will be carried out, and write reports on them. I am currently thinking about how to propose the idea of me moving to part-time work to my boss, and it depends on how sensible my current plan is (I have no frames of reference to judge by). I currently work 35 hours a week (in a contract position, I should add, not direct employee), and I want to start working for around 30 hours, 2 of every 4 weeks. So I'd have my full week at university, a full week of reading / essays the next, then 2 weeks of 6-hour days, doing a couple of hours reading / essays after work, and repeat.

Coincidentally, I literally found out a couple of days ago that the other 2 people in my department are severely under-performing compared to me and my recruiter called me in to see him to have a chat about whether or not I thought they were the right fits for the role, and even suggested that there might be a possibility they'd ask me to go back act as a 'trainer' for them, so I know they want to keep me on the books. I don't have a great social reputation but I do have a good reputation for being highly motivated and just getting the job done, so I wonder if that'd increase my chances for being allowed to continue part-time?

Basically, I'm wondering if anyone has any insight on whether my plan of 30 hour a week every 2 weeks is sustainable while doing a masters course, or if I should reduce it down to 15, or even not work at all during (though it would be nice to have some income).

Much appreciated for any help!

Im 18 almost 19 and i badly want to go to uni but i dont have the proper qualifications

Im a 18m (sortof student) from new zealand. I left school when i was 16, after term 1 in year 12, in new zealand we have whats called ncea levels. ncea level 1 (year 11) 2 (year 12) and 3 (year 13). I left because of bad choices and crowds basically. I became a big pothead, would fight and get in trouble and my vice principal got tired of constantly dealing with me so said it was best if maybe i left and tried to work. So i did.

It was good for the first 6 months to a year, but i wasnt dedicated to any of the jobs. i got fired from my first one but the rest i just left because i sincerely didnt enjoy any of them. Job to job in factories, temp agencies etc. and i came to my senses, cut down massively on pot and decided to call a correspondence school and get enrolled.

Dont get me wrong im not an idiot, in fact my first few years of high school i was in extension classes and got really good marks when i tried, problem is i never tried for most of them and i hated school. Now im doing correspondence i love it. I love studying and doing exams and getting the marks.

Problem is my progress is very slow. My dad recently had a stroke and can no longer work so my mum has asked me to work 25ish hours and studying on top of that is hard. My original goal was to get my levels and be at uni next year but at this rate its not going to happen. as i have 1 and a half levels to go through. I know i am very capable of it and now i really want to sort my shit and get to uni next year but i was wondering if there was a faster way rather than going through mountains of schoolwork on top of working to get there?

tl;dr i left school at 16 , i realised my mistake and want to attend uni but im working 25 hrs a week due to my dad being out of work due to stroke. Is there anything i can do to speed up the process a bit? cheers

I want the superintendent fired

I was falsely diagnosed with a mental illness in 4th grade, tested with only a few behavioral problems over 6 years. I was medicated, I could never sleep since the meds were making me stop breathing at night. After 2 years of this I forcefully quit taking those meds after my best friend died. He had always said I needed to quit those meds. Years later my school was still on my ass about it even though my grades and test scores doubled. I threatened the board if they didn't help me. Weeks later the superintendent had a meeting with me and my parents. Good news is that I was officially off the meds. But the way she talked to me. She thought I was retarded, saying I was resourceful for using basic browser tools. That I could be president. That I should put my voice out. Go the board meetings. I then left and now months later I have realized, she didn't care, she just didn't want her reputation ruined, she thought I didn't know what the world was really like. How can I deal with this!? I don't want to be deemed a true threat! I need help! I want closure! Wait, I didn't even talk to the superintendent! They said she was the superintendent. So there's that too. How do I regain faith in the system after this!?

Joseph Lieberman: School choice is a winning policy, so why don't Democrats support it?

Joseph Lieberman: School choice is a winning policy, so why don't Democrats support it?

School choice is overwhelmingly supported by the American public, including various Democratic constituencies, yet the party nonetheless opposes it. This isn't new news, school choice has long enjoyed widespread support and that support is clearly growing.

Perhaps more significantly, school choice is highly popular among independent voters, those swing voters who can most easily be moved towards (or away from) candidates and parties. If you want to beat Trump / Republicans / Conservatives / Libertarians / etc., one tactic worth considering might be to stop driving the undecideds into their arms.

Here's a rhetorical question: is this a case of the party taking a principled though unpopular stand or, as Lieberman suggests, the result of the party selling out it's constituency to the teacher's unions in exchange for the mountains of cash they contribute?

Here's a question that isn't rhetorical - do you believe spending your money to buy political support is:

  • An effective long-term strategy to prevent increasing adoption of school choice?
  • Is it proper to corrupt the political process by paying off politicians to oppose the public will?

LMS Help

Hi all! I am searching for a new LMS system in clinical research and I'm wondering if you know of one that fits these two parameters - does not charge per user (boss wants unlimited users), and would allow us to set up our own sign on (i.e. use an existing username and password and not set up our own account).

Looking for feedback.

Looking for feedback on a reward-based learning tool for children that parents will help set goals an encourage progress.

It utilizes the blockchain to record children's progress after doing the learning task. After kids complete the goal set with their parents they will earn rewards.

I would really appreciate if you looked up KidSpar on Indiegogo and let me know if you understand the project.

Any feedback will help. We are still early in the campaign process and editing the page as well as making a more descriptive website.

Question for Gym Teachers!

Hello Everyone,

I am not a teacher, but am in graduate school currently studying technical entrepreneurship (M.Eng.). As part of one of my research projects, I have to research an industry and look for trends/problems/challenges, etc. within the industry. I have been focusing on the K12 educational landscape for this project.

One of the areas I have noticed that seems to lack the focus and attention other subjects get is physical education. I was just wondering if any phys. ed. teachers would mind posting some of the challenges they currently face every day as an instructor, coach, and teacher.

Some questions to consider:
What are some of the hardest things about your job?

Are there any aspects where you lack support from administration?

Does administration place less emphasis on phys. ed. initiatives?

Do you currently use any sort of technology for perform your job as a phys. ed. teacher?

Are there areas of the job you wish there was an easier way to do it?

How important do you feel physical ed. is for the student's overall performance in the classroom?

Thank you to everyone who posts in advance, I really appreciate it!

I want to be an engineer.

First of all I'm completely stuck with where to go or what to do..

Basically I live in the UK and work full time as a production operator for a pharmaceutical company and recently I was given the opportunity to become a setter operator for the company so now I dabble in the engineering side of things and work with the engineers on a regular basis on the machines and have been enjoying it so much I want to take it further.

I have 1 A level, 2 AS levels and 7 C grade GCSE's

Any advise would be great! And thanks in advance!

Moving from a high school to middle school, what should I know?

I would appreciate any pearls of wisdom from those who have taught both middle and high school. I know there is a steep learning curve and I could use some practical advice to get this year off to a smooth start.

Just for background, I teach social studies. I taught world history to 10th graders for 5 years. Now I'm teaching 7th and 8th graders U.S. history and world geography.
