Books for middle schoolers?

I teach middle school English (7th and 8th graders). I also teach in a tough school/area. They are NOT readers, I struggle to get them to read. I’ve tried to get them to enjoy when we read in class by not adding study guides and assignments. Because of the lack of reading as a school our average reading level is closer to 5th graders.

So my questions are these:

1) what books did you read/or teach in middle school that was /is highly engaging?

2) what strategies do you use or enjoy most when reading books in English classes?
