Much of the school integration debate centers on the social capital middle class parents bring to the school. Much of this social capital manifests as parental engagement in the form of serving on the PTA or volunteering at the school.
This article summarizes arguments over whether or not parental engagement actually helps student achievement. It also provides examples from two schools, one where parental involvement was welcomed, and another where it wasn't. These examples highlighted the importance of the school administration being receptive to parental involvement.
