I work at a highly diverse high school. A large population of our students are ELL, most with their first English speaking experience being high school. Something most of us struggle with doing daily is motivating students from a culture that doesn't always prioritize education. Upon speaking to one of my students today, with his head down, I asked him:
"Why are you in high school? What are your future goals?"
He replied with a shrug, explaining that his uncle will secure him a job in the lines of construction or house work when he turns 17.
I spoke with him about his options, the intensity of manual labor and the lack of options and benefits. However, he didn't seem convinced.
We also struggle to see parents supporting higher education for some of the youth and moreso having their kids stay home to work or take care of younger kids.
What is a good resource/article/talk I could have with these students to open their eyes to new possibilities?
