Tips and advice for male education professionals

Hi all,

I'm a male school counseling graduate student and fairly experienced educator who will be starting my practicum next semester. I am looking to get tips and advice from male school counselors who would be willing to give a little information on how you handle confidentiality, privacy, and professionalism. I would be very interested to know what kinds of boundaries you have and what things you do to ensure that you can work confidentially with students and build rapport without making anyone feel uncomfortable or making yourself vulnerable professionally.

I know it is something all counselors have to consider, but I have seen female school counselors at places I have taught sometimes do casual things like spontaneously touching or hugging students in a way that I have felt like might not be okay for me.

Additionally, as a teacher I have always maintained a policy of never being alone with students unless its a hallway with video coverage or otherwise absolutely necessary, and that will have to be different when I work as a counselor.

Thank you very much for your attention and assistance!
