People that got accepted into a master's degree program despite having a lower GPA, how did you do it?

Most universities require a minimum gpa for you to even be considered for a master's program once you have completed a Bachelor. Let's say the minimum is a 3.0 but you ended your last semester of your bachelor program with a 2.9

What steps could be taken to get into that master's program? Letters of recommendation? Work experience? Volunteer work?

I'm asking for a friend who is seriously stressing out because getting a 3.0 and then getting their masters degree means the world to them and they are convinced that many doors will close for them if they don't achieve it. They have a bachelor of arts with a major in women's studies and want to continue their education with the hopes of one day becoming a professor on the subject.
