Hello Everyone,
As the current pandemic has spread, I have become interested in studying plagues and pandemics of the past to get some unique insight. It is pretty eerie/amazing how many comparisons can be drawn between viruses and diseases that spread hundreds of years apart. The Spanish Flu Pandemic of 1918 has piqued my interest a lot because of all the similarities that can be drawn between it and COVID-19.
The symptoms of the Spanish Flu (not actually from Spain) presented similar lung problems and it was just as contagious. Obviously it is not the same disease but the world reacted in very similar ways. America was mostly quarantined as it spread in the fall of 1918. It was especially tragic because it spread among the ranks fighting in WWI. In the end, the Spanish Flu killed more people than WWI. Unfortunately, the ventilator was invented 10 years after the pandemic.
Fortunately, thanks to modern medicine, Coronavirus will not be as disastrous as the Spanish Flu. However, it is still very interesting to learn about it as history repeats itself. The best resource I found is a 7-part mini YouTube series that gets the job done. I'll provide a link to the module below. If you also read into the 1918 pandemic and have other resources you enjoyed please send them over in the comments. Thanks for reading!
