What is "compulsory education?"

I watched a 2-hour long drawing session of an infamous South Korean artist, named Kim Jung Gi. He answered questions that his fans asked and one of them was about his schooling life when he was a student. He said he did poorly since all he did was draw, his grades were not good and a lot of colleges and universities did not accept him (mainly ones that are in demand like STEM, etc.). Someone questioned how it was possible to finish high school if Jung Gi never paid attention. The translator Jung Gi had said that high school in South Korea has a compulsory education so he didn't need to pay attention in high school.

This confused me because it isn't compulsory education the same as what the US has. In the US you have to pay attention to pass. . . ? Please inform me, because I am confused.

" Compulsory education refers to a period of educational attendance required of all students." -definitions.uslegal.com

Huh?
