Keeping in mind evidence based learning strategies like retrieval practice and spaced repetition and disregarding the specific disciplines and how frustratingly boring they are; how effective are textbooks in developing a good mental model for different concepts? Is there any scientific evidence regarding the effectiveness of textbooks for learning?
