I’m going into junior year, so the college application and career path decisions are just around the corner for me. As of right now, business, teaching, or a stem career (surrounding physics or biology) are my three main options. Lately, the idea of teaching has seemed like the best fit for me, but I want to talk to people in all career fields first. As far as teaching is concerned, highschool French, math (higher level geometry or algebra for like freshman/sophomores), physics, lower level English classes, or French are all Hs subjects I’d be willing to teach. Fourth/fifth grade kids are also of interest. I understand that starting in a new district normally means not getting top pick on grade/level of courses, but just wanted to throw that out there.Since this is a HS teacher subreddit, most of my questions are abt teaching HS or teaching in general, but I did include a few about lower levels in case anyone has taught at a different level. I would really appreciate any feedback!
-
What made you want to go into teaching? What made you stay?
-
Do you regret going into teaching and why?
-
What would you have done differently (either college or during your teaching years)?
-
What are some of the pros/cons of teaching HS students? (Or any other level, I’m also considering elementary)
-
If I were to Major in physics but minor in whatever you need to teach HS, could I teach freshman/sophomore math as well if the class was geometry and I took that to get my degree, or would I need a degree in math?
-
How does the pay of teaching compare to other jobs? It obviously depends on the district, but aside from that, what can I do to ensure I’m making enough money. I’m not a super money driven person, and I know something like being an anesthesiologist would pay more, but I really just want to be happy so I don’t mind the lifestyle differences that come with that.
-
Does it get boring having the same job from college on?
-
Do you have any other words of wisdom/things to I should think about before going into teaching.
-
What personality traits do “bad teachers” have in common? Ex: is there something like hating kids that will make the job unbearable
-
I feel like the answers will be incredibly bias, but what’s the best subject to teach? (Considering pay, freedom to teach what I want, level of difficulty, etc.)
-
What’s the best state to go to college in/does it make a difference? If I want to move states what kind of testing is required? What about moving countries?
I think that’s it, thanks so much in advance to anyone who responds!
