Recommendations on books dealing with very young ESL learners?

Being used to a little older kids who (somewhat) quickly adapt to reading simple starter words and such, I sometimes feel that I'm having trouble when I teach 5 to 7-year-olds, where reading and writing just won't play. I pretty much have free rein on how to teach, but I often feel that I'm lacking measurable results after, say, 4-6 months of teaching. I use simple starter vocabulary groupings (for instance 8 colours, 6 toys, 10 animals and such) that we can use in easy sentences and acting, I teach counting, approachable children's songs, English games and so on, I encourage participation and make sure to keep it light and entertaining when possible,,, pretty much the standard ESL stuff you'd do with absolute beginners.

With this I can do a pretty kickass demonstration class for the parents at semester's end but I can't help feeling the kids could have gone further. I'm having a class now that's been with me for 2 years and, sure, they have a vocabulary, they can answer stuff like "Where are you going?" when I see them in the reception or the hall, but they virtually never initiate conversation apart from in Chinese. Yes, they have no exposure to English outside of the classroom so I certainly understand why many of them shy away, but I want to improve both my teaching and on their progress,, I'm just not sure how to do it.

I'm looking for book/website/author recommendations on early ESL/EFL at and around university level aimed at people with a degree in education (adding that part due to the relatively high number of foreigners teaching in Asia without a relevant degree). FYI, I have 16 years of teaching experience, many of them working in China and I feel very comfy teaching age 8 and up. I want to be better informed on the pedagogical philosophies, methods and approaches to the younger bracket. Much appreciated.
