My principal just called yesterday - from a Jeffco school. This will be my 25th year. I filled in the form to work remotely. I was denied. I'm "Tier Two."
I will have the SAME number of kids - no difference from last year. My 51 year old body will STILL be seeing OVER 60 kids every two days - not to mention all the other adults that I am required to have a face to face meeting with daily. Different kids - double - triple, then quadruple the number because they are exposed to another set of kids.
I have taught multiple years at this school. The parents work hard, I am not denying that. They also sent their children in regularly to school sick, with fevers, chills and a sick stomach because the school nurse can watch the kids until they they can reach a parent who has a disconnected phone. This usually happens about 2:30-3:00, five to six hours later.
Am I scared? Hell yes. I want to retire from Jeffco - not be buried because of having to show up. I want to return to the classroom.
But until I know I will be safe, it is unfair to my own children that they could be left orphans. And it's unfair to my almost 80 year parents that they could lose their only child.
And if I don't return, I lose my job, my house and the ONLY security I have EVER had.
Thank you, Jefferson County.
