Should I make use of good grades or peruse a hobby I love...

Sorry for the long read ahead.

So recently I received my exam results for my highers (Scottish equivalents to English a levels) and I honestly did pretty well. Throughout the whole of school I had thought that engineering was the way to go, I didn’t adore it but I didn’t dislike it either. It was interesting to me, and so I based most of my subject choices on it. Though, I was always into video editing and graphics too. Throughout lockdown, I had worked solely on a YouTube documentary and it was one of the best things I have done, I loved it and felt so accomplished when finishing it.

Now the problem is that I am at a time to choose a subject at university, but I am stuck with two completely different career directions: either do an academic subject to make use of my grades and have a stable job as an aerospace or software engineer, or pursue a more creative career doing the thing I know I enjoy now—that being perhaps a video editor or freelance graphic designer.

I’ve heard people say “do the thing you love” but with the amount of competition graphic design and video editing has, I don’t know if that will be stable enough to peruse and I feel like I will be making a total waste of my good results.

Thanks in advance :)
