Mathematics equation layout (horizontal vs vertical)

Hi,

I am just wondering what are the advantages and disadvantages of the 2 types of equation layouts for addition, subtraction, division and multiplication.

Do teachers list out the questions in horizontal form and expect the students to use the vertical forms to solve them? Or do they want them to solve them without using the vertical form?
