My wife and I are moving, and we’ve got a newborn. We’re doing our best to provide her with (not too far in the distant future) great public schooling, but also give her exposure to the diversity in our city, which has a high Latinx population (I’m Mexican American).
As it stands, the “good schools” (based on test scores) tend to be the whiter schools and in more suburban neighborhoods. The “not so good” schools are in the up and coming and relatively poorer neighborhoods. This could be true across the country. While still my wife and I have had many a conversation about how the entire “rating” system is inherently racist and problematic, we’re also still feeling a bit of the pull to ensure our kid has great opportunities - fun field trips, a school library, etc.
We want to do our part to try and create a more equitable education system, create a great diverse space for our kid to live in, and have great public education. What should be prioritized? Is it possible to have it all in a big metro city?
