Background info: I'm currently a long-term sub through January in a 9th Grade ELA position. For what its worth, the students I'm working with already know me relatively well as for the last three years I've been subbing in their middle school while I was going through school (graduating this month, yay!)
This morning I had a student at the beginning of class ask to use the restroom. I signed her a pass. She didn't return until about half an hour later (I knew she'd be returning because she left her things in the class). While she was gone another student mentioned that she was gone for the entirety of her last class too, and she probably wouldn't return until the end of this one either. When she came back, I said nothing of it. At the end of class I spoke to her and she said the reason she was in the restroom so long was, as the title says, she was having a panic attack. She looked a little teary-eyed and definitely was getting anxious as I was talking to her about failing.
I have of course brought it up with the counseling staff, who was unaware of the issue. I'm trying to find ways to assist without drawing attention or exasperating it. Its difficult for me as I'm someone who has never dealt with these issues personally. Any advice would be much appreciated!
