I'm exploring creating an app (desktop, iOS, and Android) that allows students to play the game, level up, collect items, etc - all while improving their vocabulary, grammar, reading comprehension, etc.
Think Prodigy, but for reading and with an entirely different feel.
Some of the educational details:
- Scales for grade level/reading level.
- Adjusts questions based on student's progress and understanding.
- Provides data to educators to show progress in different areas
- Allow the teacher, from their version, to give "assignments" and "tests" through the app, while providing grades and analysis in return.
- The idea is that there would be a student, parent, teacher, and district/school level version.
- Maybe grades 4-12?
Gameplay details:
- Typical dungeon crawler/roguelike, endless floors
- Characters can level up
- Character creation and customization
- Ability to play with/against friends and classmates
- Can collect "gold" to upgrade the character and equipment
There is obviously a whole lot more to this. However, I won't share too much!
I was inspired to put this together after seeing how engaged by students were with Prodigy back when I taught math. Even the older kids loved it, even if they wouldn't admit it! The excitement of leveling up, battling, and improving really helped them a lot.
Thoughts?
Note: My plan is for the student version to be free. The teacher version and district/school versions would have to be paid, as this would be an expensive undertaking on my part.
