The goal of academia: CONTROL?

So, I have been in college for a couple of years now. The leftism proposed by professors is consistent -- the department doesn't much matter. It is expected and doesn't even bother me anymore.

But, I have realized something. The implicit shaming put forth by professors, and even left-leaning students, has caused me to do something worse than silencing myself. It has caused me to lie -- to make comments which are completely unaligned with my actual views. Why? Fear. Fear of judgement, alienation, and even fear that my grade will decrease. I have to pretend to be far-left.

Is the goal of academic institutions to kill debate? If so, they are succeeding. Is the goal to cause more conservative students to question their morals and feel ashamed? Again, if so, they are succeeding.

What is the goal here?
