Why do some people always lie?

So one of my friends (I don't even know if you can call him my "friend") always lies about his past. He constantly acts as if he moved to China and learned Kung Fu/Wing Chun in the military or something, being able to type fast, and consistently working out. I don't know why he always lies about these specific topics, as it's not really that impressive. He's extremely egotistical and a narcissist. However, one part about him that constantly bugs me about him is that he constantly states that he's an atheist when he was born and raised as a Muslim. Now, me being an atheist myself, I honestly do not care about his racial, ethnic, and/or religious standings, however, I don't know any atheists or even scientists that would try to verbally attack religion as much as he has. Also, I don't understand why he acts as if he understands everything about Science and Math class when I've seen him constantly ask questions to me about certain topics and ideas. He doesn't know everything, so I don't know why he always acts as if he does, even when he clearly doesn't understand a topic he acts as if he understands everything about a certain topic after one simple explanation, but he still asks the same question to me.

However, I'm the most pissed when he always acts like he's good at French class. Whenever he and my other friend do work, he always asks for his copy, so that he can "CHECK IT", "EDIT IT", "GIVE HIM IDEAS" when he clearly only wants to copy the work. I get the most pissed off by this because I spent a whole summer getting bullied by individuals from Quebec and France because I wanted to practice my French with them (if you're wondering: they bullied me because my French sucked and their English was superior to my French).

I don't say anything to him because I know that in College there will be smarter and more hardworking individuals that will cool down his ego, but I don't like how he has to show off his dominance.

Any tips and tricks that will help me understand him better?
