PSLF Question

I am a high school teacher and am currently getting my masters. Once finished with my masters I am going to get a specialist and Doctorate after that. Should I apply for the PSLF now, or should I wait until I’m done getting the degrees? I’m worried if I apply now it won’t count the future student loans I take out/that it will mess up my eligibility. Any insight to this would be great, thanks!

Switching courses

I am 19 and completed my two years BSC Geology in the period of 2020-2022. I borderline hate it but it didn’t affect me because of online schooling until last month which put me into thinking that this sucks and i would like to do something in statistics. Needless to say i was quite ambitionless up unti now. I have decided to switch to maths and statistics and statistics for the final third year of three year bachelors degree course. Can anyone please give me an insight on how tough mathematics is on degree level. I used to score above average in mathematics in my previous academic years

Emotionally and Physically Abusive(?) Cello Teacher

Okay, so the title kind of says it all. I’m not sure if she’s exactly abusive, but I’m hoping to see if she is and if she is, what to do about it through this post.

Before anything, a background info on me. I’m a straight-A student, top scorer in class, and I try really hard to be good in whatever I do. I’m studying really hard for the GCSEs, and sometimes I struggle to find time for intensive cello practising.

Back to the teacher. I’ve had this teacher for a year and a half now, and things are just getting worse. At first, like the first one or two months, she was really kind and supportive. But then, she suddenly started to turn… a little mean, saying things that really hurt me on a daily basis. These are just a few examples:

  1. She says that she can see that I haven’t lived my life properly, never tried hard enough in my life, belittled me and my accomplishments.

  2. She tells me that there are so many people who are good at both studying and cello. She tells me that I must be an idiot because all the other smart kids she’s taught are amazing at cello.

  3. That said, she constantly compares me to her other students, especially my friends. That they find time to study and practise cello, that I’m not trying hard enough, that she can see I’m wasting my time even though I don’t have enough time. And I tell myself, I’m good enough, that my friend who she compares me to all the time is more musically oriented (and it’s true, she wants to pursue music) and that I’m only doing cello on the side. But it’s hard to convince misled that when I don’t ever think I’m good enough.

  4. She comments on my physical appearance, saying I LOOK slow and that I look boring.

I was fine with these things, to be fair. But last few weeks, as I am working towards ABRSM Grade 6, she’s taken to more than just upsetting words. Any time I make a mistake, she hits me, with her hand or with her bow. Every time I start playing, my hands shakes (even though I really don’t want it to) and she gets even more mad because I shake.

Is this normal for like music teachers? Am I over-reacting? My teacher says it’s all for my good… but lately I’ve just been feeling so down, sad, and even more stressed than I usually am.

Any advice, comment would be greatly appreciated. Also, not sure if this is the right community to post this on, and if it isn’t, please tell me so so that I can copy-paste it somewhere else. Thank you for reading through this lengthy post :)

USA Teacher "strike" for the 2nd Amendment?

I was curious to know, from educators about an idea I had.

The gist of it is this. Elected officials believe you all should have guns in class instead of trying to solve the nations excessively easy access to guns problem.

Now a lot of states make striking illegal, and well striking doesn't keep the family fed... But how about this.. Find a job this summer that 'pays the bills' and refuse to work for the school system until the 2nd amendment is gone?

Looking for good video content about western civ for young students and non-westerners without prior education

I am looking to mentor someone who has very little knowledge of history, philosophy, religion, enlightenment, civics, politics and other similar topics. There's plenty of good content online about these topics but much of it is not friendly to beginners. Specifically, a lot of content makes constant references to other historical events, concepts and ideas which requires us to pause whatever we're watching in order for me to go into 10-20 min lecture just to explain what the reference to Plato's cave means or the significance of Peace of Westphallia. Now I don't mind going into a tangent ocassionally, but some content makes so many references that it's impossible to understand it without extensive knowledge.

I am interested in beginner friendly video content which doesn't assume extensive knowledge from viewers.

Areas of interest and specific topics as examples:

  1. Classics - Greco-Roman history, philosophy, literature (short summaries of literature) and major figures

  2. Bible - summary of main stories, figures and concepts. Also including religiously significant literature like T. Aquinas, Dante, etc

  3. Art history - eras and artistic movements, most important artists and their work

  4. Enlightenment - philosophical foundation and major figures, its connection to classical philosophy, rationalism, liberty, religious tolerance, constitutional government and separation of church and state

  5. Modern history - colonialism, reformation, scientific revolution, world wars, fascism, communism, cold war

  6. Civics & politics - political philosophies and mainstream political positions and their arguments, without agenda pushing

I don't expect any single source to cover all of this, but if you know of any good content that covers these areas and isn't intended for an already knowledgeable audience, please share it. If there is any place that already compiled resources for this kind of education, please let me know.

Thank you!

Failed and dropped out of University, now have a 4.0 at Community College

When I was at university I was depressed and unmotivated, now I'm in a much better place and have a 4.0 GPA. I'm curious about transferring back to the same University I was at before, but my GPA at the university is horrible. I failed 2 semesters there.

My question: If I go back to that university with the bad GPA, will that continue with me? Or is it possible to start over from clean at the same university. If going back to the same university means having the stink of the previous GPA there, I should go to a completely new university. What do you guys think?

Resources for university drop outs who are considering pursuing (higher) education again

I am currently 22 and I dropped out of university. The reasons were a combination of mental health problems, covid and wrong degree choice.

I would like to ask if any of you have any tips on how to start on possibly pursuing an education again. I am not looking for location-specific resources, more general ones about “making the right choice” 1. How do I now my talents and the degrees that will develop them while being useful 2. Apart from reading books, how can I learn outside of university 3. How to know which form of education (degree/non-degree, part time, full time…) will suit me and my needs

I know I am asking quite complex questions here. But any response will be appreciated

Cancel student loans for public school employees

A soldier can serve for fewer than ten years and go to college for free.

Why should public school employees have to make 120 payments in order to get their student loans forgiven when they might ALSO get shot on the job?

Public school employees often have the same requirements for post-secondary education as people in much higher-paying private sector positions, frequently work harder, and are responsible for growing the skills necessary for every other career.

Once a public school employee has worked for 120-240 months in the position, depending on the poverty level of the schools in which they worked and regardless of how many loan payments they have made, their entire student loan balance should be forgiven in gratitude for their service in public education.

John Dewey

This might be the wrong place to discuss this but I will try anyway. What do you think of these John Dewey ideas?

Agree or no? I am conflicted.

“If we teach today’s students as we taught yesterday’s, we rob them of tomorrow.”
John Dewey

The child's own activities should determine the curriculum.

In Dewey's words, "education is the fundamental method of social progress and reform."

what do americans think of the brazilian method of getting into universities?

maybe Americans don't know, but the Brazilian method of getting into universities is very different from the American one, and this method receives a lot of criticism from Brazilians who consider the American a better method, but I realize that there are many Americans who criticize their method to enter universities so I wanted to know what they think of the Brazilian method.

the first difference between the methods is the universities,

In Brazil, public universities are 100% free and are considered excellent universities with quality education.

however, although they are not paid, there are only 69 across the nation and they are very competitive, to enter these universities it is necessary to take a test known as ENEM.

no enem students who graduated in the last year of high school can apply, in which they will have to take two different tests in two days, which cover high school subjects with

On the first day, they do humanities questions such as Portuguese, geography, art and an essay.

and on the second day there are exact questions such as physics, chemistry and mathematics.

at the end of the tests, students will wait a few months for the results, when they receive their grade from a calculation system that varies depending on the question and subject, and depending on it, they will be able to enroll in a program to enter public universities or get scholarships to private universities.

for example, if I got 800 on my enem grade and I want to enter the gastronomy course at the public university in my city and the grade for this course is 700 and the number of vacancies has not yet been filled, I will be able to enroll.

however, if I don't have the grade to enter the course or the number of vacancies has already been filled, I can enter the gastronomy university in another city or another state.

this method receives a lot of criticism for reason and has flaws in the same way that the American method receives a lot of criticism.

but I wanted to know what Americans listening to the idea in a raw way think of this proposal?.

Getting Public High School to pay for out of district class

My son is going to be a Junior in high school and wants to take an advanced coursed not currently offered at our public school. With a bunch of meetings, emails etc they finally approved the class for him and it will count towards graduation. We are meeting with admin to discuss the possibility of the system paying for the class.

It’s an AP course available at many comparable school systems around us but not ours. It’s listed in the AP Courses through the DOE. He has taken a more challenging path through the school system because he is bored and his needs are not being met. Any non traditional path has been complicated but eventually approved and he has performed well.

Any insight as to help persuade them? Every other kid like mine just goes to private schools but it’s an issue financially. If it doesn’t get approved I will need to do a side job to cover it which I will do to meet my kids needs. This class is relevant to his college interests.

Mental Health Assessments

All students enrolled in American Public Schools should absolutely be required to complete a Mental Health Assessment towards the end of their senior year. The assessment records should be sent to their state to be filed and reviewed upon application for license to carry, or gun purchases. This seems like a reasonable thing for schools and governments to collaborate on in order to prevent violence in their futures. But I’m sure we’ll never see anything like this be put into action.

Do all children have the right to free public school education?

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott sees the potential to undo Plyler v. Doe, a U.S. Supreme Court decision requiring public schools to educate all children, regardless of their immigration status. Senior Reporter Corey Mitchell talked with Thomas Saenz, president and general counsel of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, about how Abbott’s remarks can affect immigrant families.

Education in Post Pandemic and the New Normal

Hello everyone, hope you are doing well. I work as IT at a Higher Education uni in London. (so Bachelor and Master degree in Art & Design Fashion, Business and Styling).

And this common thread among our students keeps coming up, and they are using phrases such as the new normal and applying it to their education. Meaning they wish to be educated from Home, and most of them are living in dorm rooms in London. And chose to come to the school when they wish to. Which creates difficulties and a rift between students on site and students on Zoom. We are still doing all our classes as hybrid (both online and in school) this is mainly intended for students who are abroad in their home countries. (Such as Chinese, Ukrainian and Russian students and other countries that local laws and circumstances prohibit them from traveling)

So I wanted to start a discussion here and ask. Do you think the same WFH flexibility working professionals have should apply to students in Education?

If yes, why?

I personally think (if the school/university) is a physical location and it is safe to attend class it should be mandatory. Especially when I put it in context of the following issues that come up:

-early morning classes are usually attended online;

-students decide to go on holiday mid term and attend online from the beach house (i have multiple examples of this actually happening).

-students accusing the University of being archaic and refusing to participate in the New Normal

I apologies if this is not the correct subreddit for this topic, let me know if another place might be more suitable.

This video really gets to the core of what a revolution actually is. From it origins to its contemporary meaning, this provides an analysis of what a revolution constitutes and its not the cliched holiday sci-fi idea from the hunger games or the violent power struggle people associate with the storming of the Bastille from the French Revolution. Revolutions are much more than the seizure of power, if anything that is just a step along the way.

This little known gem from 1981 is the best educational software I've ever experienced

Hello,

I'm a Carnegie Mellon Graduate in physics and computer science. I currently work in scientific research and make cool video games in my spare time. I've been gaming since 1980, and my mom got me a Ti-99 when I was 3 in 1981, and I've been coding ever since(despite my parents just being blue collar). There is a piece of software I recommend ALL parents everywhere get their kids if they can get a TI-99 or emulator, for it beats EVERYTHING tried since. Remember edutainment was failed in the 90s and people grasp at straws today still at what to do to grab a kid's attention, yet educate them. There may be better things coming around the corner, but this is literally the BEST software I've ever since, and it sounds strange since its from 1981. Check out "Addition and Subtraction" from TI-99: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cnf7feHJ73I

Digital education in elementary schools should not be practiced....

Since the 90s schools have sought (been targeted by Apple) to prioritize online and digital educational practices to youth. Think iPads in elementary schools.

I think children should not be assigned learning activities through methods like PowerPoint, email, etc.

I think it is okay to use the internet as an encyclopedia and I believe in technology/innovation in general and children should have this competency starting in middle school. However, I think we should model a tech free early education.

This may be an unpopular opinion but I think there are more like me out there…if so, help me explain why this is problematic.

This video concisely and coherently surmises the social theory of anarchism for people with no understanding of the concept and is even informative for people with a good grasp of it. The video discusses the history of the movement, its ideals/objectives, provides a comparison with authoritarian communism and then answers some of the biggest critiques of anarchism in a clever but eye opening style.

After lots of discussion regarding the Holocaust and education, I've been wondering how to implement the 'never again' promise successfully. How do we get citizens to believe and care about values that help us protect each other? Not only regarding formal education.

If you’re wondering, I’m thinking of a course in computer/software science/engineering and/or astrophysics.

Reflective Practice Models

Hi there! How does one select a reflective model? Is it a case of simply picking one and using it consistently, or is there are manner of subject- based choice (I’m a History postgrad) or indeed an activity -based choice (education, health etc)? Thanks in advance!

Is there a way to bring a 3.97 GPA back to a 4.0 with 2 semesters and around 29 credits left?

I have held a 4.0 for 3 years and I ended up getting sick so I didn’t do a single item and it dropped me to an A- and from 4.0 to 3.97.

I just want to graduate with this 4.0. Is it still possible or am I too far into it to change the grade?

I don’t know much about university scoring, honestly. Feedback is helpful!

What are some paths out of the classroom, but not the education field?

I was at my second job, when I met someone who works at 65 Court Street for the Department of Education. She told me she works for the New York City Teaching Fellows program and Collaborative program, designing the curriculum for district-75, which I thought was insanely cool Of course, she had been teaching in district-75 for 10-years, so it was a natural progression for her, and she loves managing the coursework and load.

My previous high school special education teacher, also transferred out of the classroom teaching district-75, and now works for a similar path; first as an instructional lead and coach, and now as a program specialist. Not sure what he manages, since I don't keep up with him.

Curious to know for those of you that have taught in the classroom, but now left the classroom, where did you go?

Curious to hear the pathways out of the classroom, but not the Department of Education, or maybe in the teachers unions etc. Thanks in advance!

Filling knowledge gaps

Hi there. Recently I've been coming to terms with gaps in my knowledge. I want to be a more wellrounded person. I had a really great education in STEM subjects at school, but a lacking education in english literature, social studies, world history & geography. I feel this knowledge gap quite acutely, and while I've done my best to educate myself through free resources, I know that having a teacher or mentor guiding me would be really helpful. My success in stem could likely be attributed to the quality of teaching, encouragement, open discussion, mentoring and guidance that I received. But it's been over a decade since I was at school. Is there a way that I can fill these gaps in? Self-education resources are plenty, but I feel that having people to ping off like in a class setting would make the experience so much richer. I can't really afford much as I already have student debt. Some part of me wishes I could just go back to a better school and fill those gaps in, I really crave some deeper more immersive education. Any ideas or how you did this later in life?

Your answer is my destiny

The answer to my question will either raise my hope again or lower them more. I'm a student who wasn't really that good at school with a 1.5 gpa my last year kf school is almost over. My concern is will 1.5 gpa let me attend university? Am I able to pick between different majors? ( I have an ACT score of 24 and an ielts score of 7) will I be able to go to uni abroad or in any country? Can I study psychology, law, or business with such a low gpa? I hope I get answers even if they're what I didn't want to hear, thanks!

I just don't know which ones are reputable and which are not. I would love for the college to be based in CT, just because the education standards are different from state to state. Help please!!

Newbie Question: Why does it seem "Anarchic behavior" is ever present in some schools while not in others?

Hello,

I wonder why in some high schools there's a lot of Anarchic behavior. For instance, students bullying other students, students who disrespect teachers, students who skip school. Students who don't care about getting good grades.

I used to think this was behavior was universal, that high school was bad everywhere.

However, I noticed that in other schools this behavior is not present. For instance, most people want to be in school and get good grades. People who take the school seriously.

For instance, say in School A people don't want to do the homework, there's a lot of bullying, there are people who dislike each other.

Advice

Don’t know if this is an appropriate location for this query, so forgive me if it is not.

I am interested in substitute teaching. Apparently our area is short of teachers. To substitute you need a BA degree. I don’t have one. I have a lot of CC credits (2 classes short of an AA degree). I am not wealthy. I’m not poor. I am a ‘mature’ woman. When searching for the most cost effective, quickest online degree program I am flooded with a bunch of ‘crap’. I cannot wade through all the sites as you only get so far and they want your contact information. Not passing out my email address to 50 random sites. 🥴I am interested in any advice you might care to offer. Thanks in advance.

I forgot everything I learned in the freshman year of Highschool. Am I screwed?

For more context, I left public school a few years back to start online school. With online school (at least the one I went to) you get to choose your own schedule. This means going as fast or as slow as you want. I chose the fast route and sped through freshman year in 4 months and even got straight A's! Nice right? Well now I'm headed back to public school and have NO IDEA what I learned last year. This mostly has to do with Algebra since most of the other subjects are simple to get back into, but I literally couldn't answer a simple Algebra question if I tried.

So, going into Sophomore year, learning Geometry and I feel like I have the brain of a 4th Grader. What can I do in the next 3 months before school to refresh my brain? Where do I even begin to research?

Environment Work

Hi,

I was thinking of starting a website for environmental purposes with someone. Not a political activism one, but rather an educational one, kind of like a library, for college admissions and for adding value to the environmental competition. For that, I need someone to make it with me. Is there anyone who wanna help and part with cooperation? It is an educational one, not an opinionated one, again. Anyone?

Would be better if you were a stem student interested in research. we 'might' research. In quotation marks, for it is not really decided fully. But would be soon, if the site works. I can work with a maximum of 4 other students. I have plans to participate in Conrad Challenge, ISEF, and MIT Innovation competitions.

I participated in Conrad Challenge last year and reached Level 2. So I've been awarded a free domain with .us and hosting for a year.

We might research. Anyone can apply, high school or college.

GED test from abroad?

Hi, I'm a student from Italy.

For a series of personal and family problems I had to quit high school on my second year (I was getting close to excellent grades), so I am now missing 3 years (high school in Italy lasts 5 years).

There is no option here to take the missing years all together, therefore, I would have to wait 3 whole years just to get a diploma, just to get into any university.

This is causing me enormous pain, seeing my former class mates go on to graduate university while I'm being held back, so I was wondering the following:

Would it be possibile for me, to get a GED test from abroad, or even, to get a visa to come to the us and do it in person, so that I can access a university?

Thank you for your time.

Boosting certain class marks

I am looking for some advice and information on what exactly to do. I am a Canadian resident for majority of my life and have little to zero understanding of the American education system. My family is moving to Florida which means I need to get prepared for the sat or act down there which isn’t much of a concern besides the imperial system. I’m in my final year of high school in Canada and because of some matters at the start of the year my grades have spilled fairly high. I am a mid to low 90s student for English, math, science and any subject but this year has been quite a challenge and I’m not really able to keep up with my advance classes. In Canada they have 12b or the 13th grade to retake courses to boost marks or redo classes. Does the USA or mainly Florida have an equivalent to 12b or the 13th grade to redo high school classes? I’m trying my best to just push forward and finish strong but that is not working out so well. I believe I currently have 70s to 60s in university chemistry and advance functions. If anyone has information or advice please share :)

How do I study 17 hours a day with full concentration?

Here is the reality of a 16 hour study day:

6am wake up

30minutes to get ready

6:30am-12:30pm study (6hrs)

30minutes for lunch

1pm-6pm study (5hrs)

30minutes for dinner

6:30pm-11:30pm study (5hrs)

30minutes to get ready for bed

12am sleep time

6am wake up (6hrs sleep)

Studying like this might happen once or twice a semester if there is a big assignment due the next day.

But following this routine for more than one or two days will harm your academic performance and your health.

There was a period of time I tried studying 12hours a day and it left me with headaches and fatigue.

I wouldn’t want any student to experience that.

As a human, you need 7-9 hours sleep a night.

As a human, you need to exercise.

As a human, you need to have social interactions.

As a human, you need rest and relaxation.

Aim for 6–8 hours of concentrated study, and leave 16hours to those who believe they are superhuman

expelling boycott

i am a British high schooler, one girl in my year has been sent to a PRU based off of how bad she acts in lessons and to other people, i have been in this girls year all my life and know she just acts out constantly and is known as the 'main Chav'. she was sent to a PRU only 3 weeks ago and was expelled from it....last week.

this has led to her being SENT BACK? to our school. since being expelled from the PRU and not our school that refuses to expel her as Ofsted (the school assessment style) will be disapproving of two expelled children in one year, no matter how necessary it is.

since being expelled from the PRU and sent back to our school permanently, she has not turned up to/completely acted out and got sent away from every single lesson, and just 2 days ago beat up 2 other kids in our year (there is clear proof and statements, the police have been involved yet her and her group are still in school.)

so all of this to say:

1) can the PRU just expel her and not send her elsewhere.

2)can the school just not expel her after all of this time.

3)how would you feel about this?

Teacher Trying to Transition to Education Policy Space

I earned my Master's in Education Policy about a year ago. Since then I have been applying for internships and full time positions while continuing to teach full time.

Often, when I look at job descriptions, many list needing to have data analyst experience using programming languages like R or Python, experience conducting quantitative and qualitative research and writing policy briefs .

I have no experience with data analysis (at least not formally, I am a math teacher), no experience conducting research and was given a very short intro to analyzing quan and qual data in one of my courses, and like one or two assignments writing policy briefs. So if I am not getting internships, how I am supposed to get experience?

I have been trying to learn Python through Coursera (free with my university email but not my preferred platform to learn) and will be shelling out more money to learn R and apply it to policy this summer with University of Chicago.

I am starting to feel discouraged as I have been rejected for summer internships (can only do summer without quitting my full time job again) and full time positions. I had one meeting with a career advisor to go over my resume and cover letter writing in January.

Free Education

I'm trying to get some feedback, on a free education resource, that is dealing with acoustics as it pertains to music production, and most other aspects of music production, the free resource is a YouTube channel that I put together after going to Full Sail University, and realized some free education in this area would be helpful to the students, the university, and the industry. I want the resource to be available to those just trying to have fun, those trying to become semi professional, and those looking to be professional production engineers. There are 500+ videos on the channel, and I've created an introduction that directs the viewers on how best to use my channel for what they would like to do, but there are a lot of videos and a lot of information and some feedback on how it's been put together to help the community in general would be greatly appreciated, because I've spent a lot of time putting together this free resource for the community in the hopes that it benefits us all. Thank you for your time and I would appreciate some feedback from those just trying to have fun, the semi professionals, and the professional community if possible...

This is going be a hard question to answer but is there any hope of getting college over charging for classes etc it is nuts.

Okay so I've spoken to a few friends that are in the know so to speak and they said that even taking the passage of time, inflation, and the sheer complexity of running a college and the many variables about the students themselves into account most courses should not cost as much as they do and it keeps going up; plus they do shady things like raising the prices for the same textbook year after year to drive up cost it is not right but I don't see a change coming but can anything be done?

So I'm a student geography teacher and have to prepare a field trip for my fellow students, which means I can't make use of a school printer for a traditional worksheet with questions per location.

So is there an app that allows for both planning a route with stops, as well as ask questions per stop? Sort of like google earth and google forms/lessonup combined? This would be great.

How do you go to college as a full time employed adult with a family?

I've been struggling with this idea lately that I'm not where I had hoped to be in life at this point. As I'm sure many people do. I enjoy my job, and making 80k a year has been great since my wife is a stay at home mom, but it is not what I WANT to do. I want(ed) to become an English teacher but various life events kept me from college until now I feel like there is no way to start.

My questions are; Can I start the pursuit of a degree in education? Is that feasible? Should I accept this as an unrealistic path in life and find something else? Have I waited too long to try to start this process?

Background: I'm 32. I have a wife, a 5 year old, a 4 year old, and a 1 month old. I have a decent amount (<$40,000) of credit card debt from said life events, so I really need to continue to be employed during this. I live in Massachusetts, if that changes anything.

Why is financial literacy not mandatory?

I kid you not if I didn’t have financially successful parents I would never trust their financial advice. That being said, since most people don’t have that, why don’t we teach even how taxes work in schools. Would have been more useful than any single other course I ever took. Wtf do more people need to know how to do their taxes and make good decisions or do I need to know about sedimentary rocks in biology or whatever. Hmmmm which one applies to a majority of people.

A designer with questions about research in educational policy.

Hello,

I'm a recent grad of a design program in Toronto, Ontario. Since my final year, I've been interested in the application of design in education. This can roughly be thought of as an application of service design practices to early education with the aim of improving the quality of education for children.

I'm specifically interested in investigating how the experience of mandatory French education classes can be improved. This would be done by conducting workshops with students, collecting their perspectives, and working with them to develop a more engaging learning experience.

My question is, does anyone know if research like this has already been done? As a new grad of a design program, my understanding of the literature around educational policy, or curriculum building is essentially non-existent. Before deciding to invest more time in this endeavour, I would like to get some feedback from people more informed on the topic than myself on whether or not this idea has any potential.

If anyone has any insights or resources they could share, I would really appreciate it. Thank you!

When do you stop pursing higher education?

Hello All,

This is sort of an odd question, but I would like to know at what point do you stop pursing higher education, I am asking at what age. Before you answer please look at my background first,

I am a 26, almost 27 years old male. Life after High school has not been kind to me, after High School I did not have any prospect about what I want to do with my life, the High School administration did not help nor did my family, they also never had faith in me. I worked for about 4 and a half years at McDonalds which made me hate my life, I finally went back to school to earn my associates degree in Information Technology, which was able to get my foot in the door to a decent job as a Systems Administrator for a Healthcare company. However unfortunately the place I got my Assoicates Degree ended up closing down, roughly a year after I graduated, which derailed my plans to earn a bachelor's degree forcing me to start over as a goal of mine is to earn a bachelor's degree. I finally made the decision to go back to school start over and get a bachelor's degree back in 2020 as a part time online student, I probably won't finish my undergrad until I am about 31 which is fine with me.

Now fast forward to what I have been thinking about lately, it took me a while to really figure out what I want to really do with my life, I enjoy working in the Technology field and I love learning new things as I have always been a believer in pursing higher education. I have looked at the possibility of getting a master's degree and maybe a Doctoral Degree, as for the first time in my life I know what I would like to do, but it may take me a long time, but my overall question here is if I were to even consider that I may not finish by the time I'm in my later 30s, is there a certain point you need to stop pursing higher education or is not unusual for people to earn higher degrees at 30s or 40s?

Please let me know,

Thank you,

How to resit GCSEs online? How many can I do?

As the title says, I'd love to be able to resit my maths and science but I have no idea how to go about doing so online. I am 18 years old and I failed all of my GCSEs apart from English and so I would like to be able to progress forward in life and possibly go to university however the courses I am looking at generally require 4 GCSEs or more. Is there a limit on how many I can resit online?

Writing a proposal to my school

Hello, hello!

I'm currently writing a proposal to my school (post-secondary) about drug safety, specifically about creating accessibility to fentanyl test kits in school. A lot of drugs are getting laced with fent where I live and access to test kits is relatively limited. I've already talked to the nurses in my school and I have their full support but I have to write the proposal myself.

Does anyone have any experience with writing proposals to educational institutions who may have some tips or suggestions? Really, anything helps.

We should learn how to write computer programs using QB64.

I wanna make more posts in this education sub, but I wonder, I want to teach people how to write computer programs, and I came up with a way to teach them, by writing code, and have comments in the code about how the code works.

I say this because I've been using QB64 to write programs. Just thought I'd teach people how. Here's a special introductory program on beginning:

PRINT "HELLO WORLD" PRINT PRINT "PRESS ANY KEY TO CONTINUE" WHILE INKEY$="" WEND

If you don't know what QB64 is, it's a special program where you can type in BASIC code from the legendary QBasic program that Microsoft was famous for in the 90s, except that QB64 is compatible with Windows, Linux and MacOS, while QBasic from the 90s was made for DOS. I prefer BASIC over C++, Java, python, and assembly.

Now, here's an example of a program where the color changes...

https://old.reddit.com/r/QBeducation/comments/umy1oa/a_program_that_cycles_through_the_first_15/

this will give some education on how some QBasic commands work, which QB64 also supports.

There's also the /r/QBeducation subreddit where one can make posts educating us on subjects, whether it's QB programs made for educational purposes, or posts educating us on how to write programs, and maybe programs that do both.

I'm also active in some subs made for sharing QB64, and QBasic (sometimes also GW-BASIC) code:

/r/QBprograms for any QBasic or QB64 programs in general

/r/QBmusic for musical compositions using the PLAY command.

/r/QBart for sharing art made with QB code

last but not least, which was already mentioned above....

/r/QBeducation, for educational programs made with QB. The newest sub of all the QB subs for sharing code.

Just thought I'd educate others on how to use QB64 and the classic Microsoft BASIC suites such as QBasic, QuickBasic, and GW-BASIC, and maybe some other dialects if one prefers something else over the QB family.

Masters Degree: Computer Science or Computer Engineering?

I will be joining one of the two master's programs this fall. My goal is to enter the ML industry after completing the degree with a good job. The problem is, CE admit is from a really popular university in a big city. NYU in NYC. Whereas CS admit is from a not so popular but a good university in not that big of a city. CU Boulder in Boulder (next to Denver, Colorado).

I can completely mold the CS degree around my ML interest. whereas in CE, I will have to take 2 hardware-related core courses which I don't like much but the remaining can be almost all related to my interests.

Please suggest one of the two programs based on your experience. And please comment on whether in the long run, the MS computer engineering from NYU will matter more or the MS CS from CU Boulder.

I actually applied for MS CS at NYU. If the admit was in MS CS at NYU, then I will choose it in a heartbeat over MS CS at CU Boulder. But it is the MS CE in comparison to MS CS that is making it difficult for me to decide.

Community Colleges should strive towards cultivating a paideia that reflects the world, not a sanitized version.

There is a community college in Texas that I have had the opportunity to observe and what I found is concerning.

Every bulletin board, every wall and corner is policed by the campus. There is no public message board. The only way for a student to express their correspondence is by submitting their flyer to inspection by the administration and then posted for a short amount of time in a dimly lit and nearly unused hallway. If you post anything with out the permission of the administration you can get expelled from campus. When I contrasted my observations with a nearby University, it was astounding. Students had the opportunity to develop a community and influence the culture of their school. But at this community college, when I met with their provost, I was told the reason they did not have a public message board was because they it made it difficult to control the "brand" that was the community college.

Students, young adults, do not need a sanitized version of life. No fish lives in clean water. It's embarrassing that some colleges act more like bleach in their community than fertilizer.

What is "whole child" learning?

There are a ton of buzzwords in our community but "whole child" seems to be an emerging trendy one. A news report today claimed that "91% of teachers believe students perform better when schools prioritize whole child learning"........but doesn't that just mean that educators think students do better when educators have the time to get to know each and every student? Connecting with students to do well academically has kinda been the goal of academics, right?

School Education in Greece

09/05/2022

Today i realised how trash is the education system. They want us to memorize whole pages of something 5 pages of written useless stuff,i feel bad.

Ok for example i memorize a whole paragrapgh i get 80/100.Wow my whole family is cheering i got a two digit number on my test paper. But did learn anything from that

probably not.Schools teach us how to become industrial workers, they dont teach life they teach us memorization.I want to become a computer scientist.I am unfortunately bad at algebra but i am trying to get over

this problem to achieve my goal.So in my school we got 5 classes B1,B2,B3,B4,B5 i am in the B5 class we got a pretty bad math teacher. In the B1,B2,B3 classes they got a good teacher and they

finished maths and now they are revising for exams.Unlike us still being on the 3 out of the 5 paragraphs,we got 1 week before the exams and none of us can do a thing, because learning algebra

on your own is pretty challenging without any guidence. And i think to myself:so basicly its a russian roulete if i get a good teacher i will pass my exams and learn stuff,if i am unlucky i wont

learn a single thing.I may stupid to someone but i think its a really serious problem that we are facing. And also noone wants to talk with me about this problem. My mother just says:I dont care just memorize

everything get a good grade.I am 17 years old my life is a nightmare because of this.On one hand i have the education system and on the other hand i have my mother telling me constantly to become a doctor

or else i will be useless and dumb.I tell her its not about the money, its about what you love doing,i loved computer from a very young age i got a strong bond with them, and i am pretty good

at IT.Thank you for hearing me i hope i find people to communicate with about this problem and hear the problems they are facing.Have a nice day/night

I teach k-12 Computer Science and the schools in my community do not offer much for Computer Science in the primary grades. I am interested in learning more from people who may have a background in offering Credit-for-learning programs, also known in some communities as extended learning opportunities (ELOs).

Can a part-time job cover living costs and tuition while studying in a university?

Hello, I'm in need of some advice. I'm a freshman but I only have enough money left for a semester or two. Can I continue my studies and do a part-time job to cover my living expenses and tuition? or should I find a full-time job and work for a couple more years then go back once I've saved enough for a full course? My dream is to be a researcher/professor so I really want to graduate someday and do a masters or a PhD.

I need serious advice to help me pursue further education.

I am 32 years old (graduated in 08) and I did a terrible job in school—especially middle and early jr. high where I often flat out failed key subjects. I managed to pass high school and graduated, but my ACT score was abysmal. Bad enough that if I were to pursue any college basic classes, I would be forced to take remedial classes first. (I had a VERY neglectful childhood and untreated anxiety/adhd)

I am in a really good place now and am itching to pursue my education again—better late than never.

Because I am a mother of young twins, one with special needs, who take up a LOT of my time, as well as my working full time, my best choice for pursuing my college degree would be to study for a good ACT score.

This would allow me to take regular college classes and eventually move on to my intended degree courses without all the time and money needed for the remedials. If I had more free time, I’d consider taking them, but they’re hard to work into the schedule because there aren’t many of them compared to basic core classes. I know this was long winded, but I need to study from the ground up before I start just jumping into ACT practice tests ….covering stuff I didn’t properly learn or have completely forgotten. I need advice on the best resources for this, something I could spend an hour a day on early in the mornings from home working on—for however many months it take—until I’m ready to retake the ACT. Any advice would mean THE WORLD to me. Thank you!!

I am open to any double major of whichever combination of the two and want to focus on getting a CPA or a CFA. My children received IEP

Autism runs in my family. I don’t usually brag but I would mention here that my family members are all highly intelligent which is the advantage of having Asperger’s .

The downside is we struggle with social communication, and this downside creates anxieties and depressions, and even suicidal ideation.

I wanted to save my children because the doctor found them suicidal. However their previous school stonewalled me, and they even reached out to mental health providers to invalidate our disabilities and our struggle with depression and suicidal ideation. When I told the staff to please stop playing with my family’s mental health care, they reached out to my therapist and psychiatrist to create stories that I am delusional and mentally ill. They don’t want anyone to know that they were playing danger with my children’s mental health for the sake of not providing IEP.

I pulled out my children from that school. My children are so much happier and healthier at the other school, and they received the diagnosis and the IEP that were robbed cruelly and inhumanly from them by the staff at their former school.

Praise the Lord.

What are the graduate school options for a graduate of BSED in English?

Hello, everyone! I am a graduate of BSED Major in English here in Philippines. I have taught for 2 1/2 years in a small private school here, but never taught my specialization (teaching Filipino and other subjects like Arts and Health), so please forgive me for any inconsistency and flaw in my writing. Right now, I want to continue my education. I want to pursue graduate school, but I have no idea what programs are there and what is suitable for me. I asked my past teachers, professors, and even classmates what should I get. Most of them said I should take a look at MA in ESL and MA in English. My goal primary goal is to stay teaching, either secondary or tertiary, as long as I am teaching. My secondary goal is to get a job where I can utilize my skills to teach others the language, like an instructor or some sort. What do you think should I get? Care to share your knowledge or opinion? Early childhood educators: what are your positive discipline hacks?

Here are mine:

Getting them to be quiet: Whispering. Don’t yell, whisper. Works EVERY time if you do it theatrically. I often whisper throughout story time and never have an issue with disruptions.

Getting kids to line up: Give one kid a “surprise message” to deliver to the other kids. Can be literally anything (my last one was “miss alternativelie’s favorite color is purple). Tell the other kids that their friend has a surprise message for them, but they can only hear it once they have lined up and gathered their things.

Dealing with a meltdown: Redirect attention by telling them you have something to show them, then take them for a walk and find something interesting to look at. If the reason that they’re melting down is they don’t want to do something they have to, warn them that they’re still going to have to do the thing, but once it’s been done, they can tell their friends what they saw.

“Magic hands”: whenever a kid gets hurt, Itell then I have magic hands and tell them a little story about how I got them. Then I rub my hands together so they’ll get warm, and I tell the kids they got warm with magic and invite them to feel my palm. Then I sprinkle the magic on them (making sure Idont touch them unless they have told me it’s ok) and tell them the magic will make them feel a little better, and now they have magic too

How much does Gallup Teacher Insight affect job offers?

I just got a job offer in a big school district that I’m super excited for! I just have to wait for HR approval, but as I wait I am just unhealthily worrying about a lot of things. My thought process is thinking of what if anything HR might find against me, but I don’t think I would have any problems in that regard. I got my license, degree, finger prints, background check, etc. all covered.

As I was google searching though, I read that someone had a job offer rescinded from them because they found that they scored low on their Gallup Teacher Insight survey. I was shocked when I read that because I thought that was just a formality survey. When I took it, I didn’t think much of it and just casually answered the questions, so I’m really hoping that I miraculously scored well on it.

Does anyone else know more about these surveys, and do you think it will actually affect me when HR reviews my information?

Teen to Skip Graduation After Principal Insists on Deadnaming Him

A high school senior in southwestern Indiana who will graduate in less than three weeks is considering skipping his commencement ceremony to protect his dignity.

Instead of looking forward to the rite of passage, Bradley Curry’s disagreement with Boonville High School administrators has consumed the teenager's last weeks of school.

The 18-year-old transmasculine student alleges that the principal, Mike Whitten, indicated he will call the student’s deadname and not their chosen name at the ceremony, this as a reversal of what Curry has been referred to by school staff and classmates for the past few years.

"I have been out since I was 12 years old and have been going by Bradley since then," Curry wrote on Facebook Wednesday. "All of my teachers and classmates call [me] Bradley. I am now a senior and will be graduating in about 2 weeks. It seems as though, sadly, I will be unable to attend graduation simply because of the principal's personal feelings against referring to trans people by their names."

He explains that along with advocating for himself, his parents have been calling and writing to school officials to work out an acceptable solution, to no avail.

Feeling like I can't ask my teacher for help

I am not sure where to post this or who to talk to about it, but I hope this is an ok subreddit for this topic.

Recently I enrolled in online college. It has been years since I attended school so I am getting back in the groove.

One of our recent graded assignments had a question that I could not seem to get right (three tries)

I asked my teacher via email and went over my process to ask where I went wrong. She just said that if I am sure I am right that I may have entered the answer in the wrong format. (Answer I kept getting was square root of 40)

This did not sound right to me. After googling solutions and methods I finally found my answer. There is a difference between -xn and (-x)n. That was where my issue lied.

In my opinion she should have mentioned that. Not "if I am sure" bs. I am not sure, that's why I'm asking.

But now I feel like when problems get more complicated, I can't go to her for help to understand them. I wonder why she is even here now. If she won't teach and help me understand the material. What is her purpose. I might as well be taking the course through the book only.

There is a public general question thread. I am debating about using that instead. But will be vague like "I am having trouble understanding question y, if you have gotten there can you message me?" Or something like that if it's appropriate.

My bitterness half want to ask her why she is the teacher if she won't teach. Even though it is only after one question. But it was a basic question that could be answered without giving the answer to the problem. So I feel off about her now.

Am I in the wrong? Is there something about the modern curriculum that I just am not aware of that prevents her from giving better teaching answers? Should I just start posting publicly when I have trouble understanding something? Is there something I can do to call her out if I should.

I just really am bitter that she is even there at this point. If she isn't even going to help me accurately understand the material, she should be there getting paid in my opinion. It also makes me worry that she doesn't understand the material and may just be blindly grading by what the computer says the answers are.

Thank you for your time.

Refresher on mathematics, chemistry, and physics

I’ve been active US mil for the past 4 years and 6 months and I’m coming up on the end of contract and was planning on getting a degree in engineering after I get out. An issue I’ve realized is that I haven’t done a lot of math, chem, or physics for the entirety of my contract. I was wondering if there was any low cost (preferably free) resources I could use in order to refresh on the topics specified above.

The highest level of education I took in high school if you’re wondering was a semester of Pre-Calc and a semester of physics as a senior (I graduated a semester early so I could enlist sooner). Did my chem class as a junior.

TLDR: Need a resource to refresh on school for low cost or free.

I am having trouble deciding on an activity because the boys range in age from six years old to about 13. I would only have about 15 to 25 minutes at most with the boys, and I’d like to do something fun that all of the boys would appreciate.

If anyone has any ideas, I would surely appreciate it. Thank you for your time in reading this, and I appreciate any and all activities/answers.

I want to change my Educational stream...Need some advice please

Hey guys, I am currently pursuing a B.E course and will be completing my course in 2 months.

I always focussed on completing the course with good grades and figured that eventually I will find a job and settle. Recently I took up a 3 month internship at a reputable company and as an intern and have come to a realisation that i do not love the prospect of a job in my stream. I feel so bored when i go to the office even though the people who work there are very fun and the cherry on top, the office does not have a managerial chain in the office. But still amidst all that happy workplace stuff, I still feel out of place. Every day I go to work, I feel more and more repulsed from my subject, I feel like I use all my energy just to get through the day. The prospect of a 9-5 job also is starting to become a bit of a scary subject.

So, I feel like I should try other streams of work. Ive always wanted own a business but have never fully tried to indulge myself into that space. I am now thinking about as switch for my masters degree to pursue a course in business studies.

Should I make the switch? Or should I stay in my stream?

Please help

Applied for a Master's, not getting a reply?

At the beginning of this I applied for a Master's that I wanted to study. I am a perfect fit for it and criteria checked out. Deadline was on the April and I messaged them a couple of times since then, their responses seems positive but the last one was a we are gonna get back to you asap. We are in May now and I am feeling concerned and super anxious due to a lack of resolution. Is this whole situation normal? Why are they taking so long and why is it so hard to just answer with anything? Have I overlooked something perhaps?

If I'm a 30 year old that coasted through school just making sure to do well in tests, but now really wants to improve how I think at multidisciplinary level, how would I improve this?

I know a bunch of people in this position where they're keen to improve how they think as they get older, and focus on getting smarter in general again. Reading books is obviously great, but I'm looking for other ways above and beyond this.

Any ideas?

How to deal with disruptive class peer who is on the spectrum

I’m completing my last year in high school, so it’s not as if I have to deal with this much longer. However, this student is enough of a distraction to the point where me and everyone in the class’s learning has been disrupted.

I don’t know for certain if they have some sort of learning disability, but I’m pretty certain they do. (That’s what the teacher was hinting at anyways.) Me and the other students have tried to be as patient as possible, but the student is extremely rude and has no regard for anyone else in the classroom. I understand it’s difficult for them to understand social cues and that’s not their fault, however, I also feel like they shouldn’t be allowed to be rude and distruttive without at the very least being corrected.

They constantly disrupt the teacher and others when talking, cutting people off, talks way too much with the teacher and gets upset when other people call the teacher over for help, has made insensitive comments towards people with gender dysmorphia, insensitive comments towards religious people, has been extremely rude to the teacher when they were trying to help, has made rude remarks when I didn’t understand something and had to ask the teacher for help, beat boxes, growls, makes noise at random times, etc.

I understand it isn’t their fault and I really do feel sorry for them. I can’t imagine how it must be to have a disorder like that (though, someone very close to me is on the spectrum), so I understand he probably isn’t being insensitive and rude on purpose (though he has literally said he likes saying things to piss people off.) We as a class have talked about it with the teacher when they weren’t there, and they said that they understood it was hard to deal with sometimes, but that we were doing a great job at tolerating it and that it wasn’t the students fault.

So yeah, I feel like a giant jerk for feeling annoyed, but the whole class is super fed up at this point. Does anyone have any sort of advice they can give? I would greatly appreciate it.

As a little disclaimer, I had no idea which flair to put this under so my apologies if it’s not the correct one.

How to advocate something should be added to the curriculum?

I am a college student writing a paper on the importance of financial education and financial literacy. Part of my paper is arguing that a financial education class should be added to public school curriculum. If one was attempting to lobby for something like this, how would one go about it and what questions arise for the school district?

Do I go to community meetings?

Talk to the superintendent or school board committee?
