Teachers Perspective

Hi, Teachers,

I've develop a service to help teach critical thinking to students. It's not a traditional text book, but it is content. What are some good ways to introduce non traditional teaching tools to teachers.

Thanks,

Skill or Education in 2025? I need help.

I want to ask something. It’s 2025 now. Many people are doing freelancing or online work.

It looks like degrees are not very important anymore.

Some people who don’t have jobs are earning more money than people with jobs. Some are even making millions.

So I’m confused. Should we still study and get a degree, or should we learn a skill and work online?

What do you think?

What should I do? 🇦🇺

I am in my year 12 and got briefings on university afterwards today and it really got me concerned. My father is encouraging me to take bachelor's in nursing and later on work at a hospital or FIFO or something or is it even possible?

I am doing ATAR, an international student, and confident enough to get 70 - 80s ATAR score.

But the problem is the fees and stress. Anyone got advice and knowledged in scholarship offers would be appreciated🙏

A request for a discussion of the scientific evidence for the benefits of home-schooling.

I'm doing some research on claims made by a home-school advocate on another social media platform, and I'd thought I'd ask a question here.

I know of several studies by various home-school advocacy organizations (The National Home Education Research Institute (NHERI), Verywell Family, Christian Home Educators of Colorado (CHEC) ..., etc) that show benefits from home-schooling. But these studies have been criticized for...

  1. Funding biases
  2. Not controlling for possible confounding variables such as the socioeconomic and/or education status of the parents, issues with self-reporting, data gaps, diversity in home-schooling practices
  3. The 2022 NHERI study uses a test called the 'Classic Learning Test' (CLT). This test emphasizes texts in the Western canon, and so has some cultural bias baked in. It is also identified with alignment with a traditional education model, which may align with the goals of the parents home-schooling their children. Thus using it as a measure may be something of an 'apples and oranges' comparison.
  4. Having a network of organizations with similar ideological makeup creating self-supporting, self-amplifying narrative (i.e. citing one another)
  5. Not submitting their work for peer review.

So, my questions are...

  1. Is there any **peer-reviewed** studies that pass methodological muster which unequivocally suppor the claims of these organizations, or is the issue much murkier once we move away from their ideological framework
  2. Does someone know of a specific scientific paper discussing the methodology and results of the publication of the NHERI 2022 study titled Quantitative Insights into the Academic Outcomes of Homeschools from the Classic Learning Test
  3. Is there somewhere else in the reddit-sphere, or elsewhere where I might discuss these questions?

Education Reform

I have a hypothesis that our current educational methodology is a system contrived from political expedience. I am looking to either be proven wrong, or to be given additional information to help me do something productive towards reform.

The current path that we are on, which prioritizes accountability/micromanagement , standardized testing, and a large quantity of academic minutes started with Reagan and “A Nation at Risk”. The data gathered during this report was misrepresented and invented a crisis where there was not one. The cure has been more and more academic pressure that is strangling our teachers and students. 40-years later we are doubling down on this zeitgeist as it has repeatedly failed us. I’m open to hearing other perspectives.

The district I work at currently gives kids 15 minutes for recess, and most of the rest of the day is fast paced inflexible academic instruction. Our C&I person tells me its more or less out of their hands and the state dictates the instructional minutes and how they are utilized.

My question is, where is the research that children learn best by prescribed X minutes per day? That’s an honest question maybe I haven’t seen it.

How informed are the people creating these requirements? Why are we not doing what is developmentally appropriate for children? Do we need different regulations or do we need to deregulate? What other political factors are there of note?

Pros and cons of a 4 day school week

My child’s school is switching to a 4 day week next year- they are adding 45 minutes onto each day and starting earlier in the year to make up for the days off. I appreciate having the Friday off but being in school for 8 hours (not including transportation to and from school) feels like a long day for an elementary student! Does anyone else have kiddos in a school with 4 day week and if so what do you like or dislike?

Education should be a privilege and treated as such

I’m a sub in America, I have also been a main teacher in Japan. The difference in the two is glaring. American kids are illiterate, bad behaved, and honestly do not deserve to be there. As tax payers we are basically paying for kids to just be there 8 hours a day. Teachers cant teach because they are too busy trying to correct behavior and this shouldn’t be the case. I know this is maybe an extreme opinion, but at the high school level, if you are acting out, don’t do your work and are generally hindering the education of your peers, you should not be allowed to be there! “oh but your leaving them out from learning” They are pushing others down! Children and teens in America are getting wildly stupid, I’m sorry but if people don’t see that now and get offended, they need to wake up. No child left behind should have never been a thing.

How do I actually start preparing for college when I'm in an alternative school?

I'm in my junior year in highschool and its close to the end of the year for me. I've been stumped with where to start looking for how to prepare for college, my SATs are coming up too and I haven't been able to find a place to study without much suggestions or anything I've been really stressed out. I've looked on school board and made an account but I'm still confused and can't find a direction. If anyone could help me out with this that would be great.

I do know I'm interested in psychology, music, and engineering as fields that I want to possibly go into I haven't looked into colleges too much since I'm still undecided on where I would like to go. I've thoight of going into a college in idaho since it's home state and I could get a lot of scholarships in idaho according to what my teachers tell me, but I've also thought of going to Pennsylvania since I've heard the colleges there are not super expensive and it would be a decent place to go, according to one electrical guy I worked with while helping my dad remodel a bathroom at a clients house.

School Security: True North

My school district is working on a school bond right now. True North is one of the contractors that consults for the bonds and does security audits for our schools.

Does anyone know much about this company? A lot of what they do is classified and so we are not allowed to know everything, and that makes me uncomfortable because the industry now has capabilities like AI monitoring with behavior analysis and facial recognition. I do not think technologies like this should ever exist in schools.

We already have video surveillance in the schools which was put in fairly recently but they are asking to fund another upgrade, along with extensive network cabling in all schools.

Does anyone have any recommendations or things we should look into or ask our board members to consider before they finish the adoption of the current school bond to submit to voters?

Thank you!

Teaching or SLP?

Hello! I’m a 21y year old community college student. I’ve been working towards an associates for transfer in Early childhood education TK-3rd. I’ve been working at a school for about 3 years. It’s my first year in the classroom as a teachers aide. I came in wanting to be a teacher myself but after seeing students behaviors and admins response to them— I’m rethinking it. One thing is for sure, I love working with kids. I work in small groups with them on things like fluency and I enjoy it. I’ve been back and forth on whether I should continue ECE. I was thinking of doing a masters in counseling so I would have a way out of teaching. My boyfriend has suggested I try going for Speech language pathology. We were researching all about the career today and it seems like a better fit for me. I wanted to hear from actual teachers, SLPs and anyone in education willing to give their opinion. Is SLP a better option than teaching? I understand it’s more schooling and still has its flaws but I want others input.

Considering my choices... Advice?

I'm looking at getting two associates degrees in the near future, one for Computer Information Systems, and the other for Communications. (Getting two because it won't cost me much more money to get the communications one but the main one is the CIS degree.)

I'm wondering where I should from there, degree wise? What would be some general options in regards to pursuing a bachelors degree after the fact? Although I'm getting a CIS degree, math isn't my strong suite, so I'm on the fence about pursuing a CS degree unless I end up enjoying (and understanding) the programming classes for the CIS degree. Obviously I have plenty of time to think about my choices, I just want to gather a list that I can keep in mind and look into in the mean time. Thanks all!

Dropped out at 6th grade. Is there any hope for me?

My life has been interesting nonetheless... I've been very blessed within the last few years from making good money from YouTube, but it's always in the back of my mind of what I'll do when the day comes that this dries up.

I haven't been in school in literally like 20 years. Never got my GED...

With how advanced schooling is now and how far behind I am... Is there any hope for me? Can I even get my GED and go on to thrive and have a great job and life? Could someone like me even go to college?

These are things I've always believed I could never do because I'm so far behind from everyone else and what kids are learning today but I'm just wondering. If I hired a teacher...

Could I actually ever learn and succeed with how far behind I am? I'd basically be starting at ground zero.

I've always thought there's no hope for me but I guess now I'm wondering if there is...

I completely missread my essay topic. What the fuck should i do?

( hope its the right sub) So today i had two final exams, and writing an essay was the second one. Since i had spent an hour sitting and answering the previous test, i had zero concentration. The topic of the essay was writing about the best present i have gotten, but the moment i saw the word " present " my dumbass went on clown mood and i decided to write a funny essay since most teachers like it. I was too drown to make it funny that i completely forgot what was the topic, and i wrote about the worst present i have gotten and described it in a funny way. I just realised it in the car, and im freaking out. My teacher always loves my essays, i don't know how will she react. Do i have to talk to her before she checks the paper or what? Im literally on the verge of tears. Can she give me score if she wants to? What would you do if your student does that😭

Hi guys im here to do bit of venting and asking for an opinion. Im 23, last year I graduated, enrolled the university at 16 but took 6 years to graduate. I was supposed to go to China in 2020 but you know, as COVID-19 happened, I couldn’t go.

Every time i go for job hunting and say about my bachelors background, they just see down on me, also don’t really have the evident knowledge to stand against them. I was taking classes online. But I didn’t really study. Now im feel like a real loser. No real knowledge or any hard skills from university. Im considering about hunting for scholarships for my second bachelor degree again in China. Im just feeling anxious what would i tell my kids about my educational journey. I really want to assure myself. What yall think?

So, I have a couple of questions for those willing to help me:

  • What are your opinions on the use of creative technologies in kindergarten classrooms? Do you think it can boost the learning experience?

  • Do you know any resources or experiences that can be applied based on gamification and image?

Thanks to all of you for reading and helping me! I hope you have a lovely day!

Resources for 3 yr old

I don't know much about kids. But the 3 yr old seems fairly ahead of the curve or I'm behind. When two they knew numbers and letters and spelling. A little about science. They couldn't speak well but would use letter blocks to spell words too. Small words like door, apple, hat, etc.

Now the child is 3. They can read children's books like Sesame Street books. And, ask for help when it's a new word.

The child spends all their time doing educational items on their own. They are learning certain topics so well that they surpass me as the adult. For example I don't know a foreign language and they know a bit. The same goes for science.

Figuring out order seems important to the kid. For example wild animals by size, continent, type.

This kid just turned 3 recently and isn't in school yet.

Are kids now just smarter?

They will start school soon, anything I should do to support them?

Admin control app for children devices

Hi all. Ihope you're having a good time. First, I really want to apologise in advance if unclear, or in the wrong subreddit. My thoughts are the following: I want kind of Admin app for controlling my children devices(android), and by controlling I mean that I want to make them studying on them by sending them tasks(math and literacy) from my phone to their devices, without the option being ignored by them and until the tasks are done they'll be locked out of their games and the only thing on their screens to be the task given. I do have Family Link, but it doesn't help in this case.

Hi everyone, I'm a 17-year-old student from Romania currently in 11th grade. I'm moving to Germany in July. Due to obvious reasons I cannot join a Gymnasium as I stand no chance. However, I want eventually to go to university. My German is currently at A2 level, so I know I have a lot of work to do. Since I can't go to a Gymnasium, I'm looking into Studienkollegs as a way to get the qualifications I need. I need your opinion on this. IB Private school or just wait for next SY at Public highschool

Hi everyone, my situation is quite different and im gonna ask what would you choose if u were in my position. So basically I recently came here in US. I dropped out of 11th at the country where I come from.

A private school that has IB progam offered me full scholarship and Ill be enrolled right away. Ill just have to do summer class for other subjects since SY is already ending and ill be doing this at a public highschool. They also have early college program, they dont do AHL for math but I also have to catch up since I missed a LOT.

on the other hand

I could enroll at my local public highschool. But I have to wait next school year.

Honestly I want to start schooling right away so that I dont have to miss anything and spend the last month before the next SY locked in the house. BUT I also dont want to feel left behind PLUS the private school only has (7 students?) I also want to experience the public school culture.

Ik it sounds bs, but what would u choose if u were in my situation ?

if TV / tiktok ads were replaced with short repeating educational segments?

Yesterday I watched TV for the first time in a while and noticed how ads are specifically designed to make you remember them. It made me wonder, why not use that format to teach stuff instead? Like, every 20–30 mins of a show, show a short, lesson on languages, math, geography... I think it would be a pretty effective way to learn.

Is it possible to fix my grades?

Unupdated grades are: a 37 in science (2 missing assignments) a 62 in algebra (2 missing assignments), and a N/A in drama.

I finished both science assignments, but my grade is never that low, with only 2 missing assignments. I'll ask about paper assignments on Monday. I could only finish one algebra assignment, but I emailed her about helping me (she hasn't replied).

Up-to-date grades: 87 in social studies, 100 in English, 79 in fitness.

I really want the A honor roll for the year, and I'm not sure what to do. I have 10 days to fix these grades. If anyone can lend some advice, let me know. I messaged my science teacher about any paper assignments just now. Other than that, I don't know what to do.

What do you guys think of this explanation?

Mental Reprogramming for Middle Schoolers: Updating Your Brain's Software

How Your Mind Works Like a Computer

Imagine your brain is like a super-advanced computer. This computer runs thousands of programs all day long without you even noticing! These "programs" are your habits, reactions, and the way you automatically think about things.

For example, when someone cuts in front of you in the lunch line, your brain might automatically run the "Get Angry" program. Or when you have a big test coming up, your brain might run the "Worry Too Much" program without asking your permission!

These mental programs are like threads in a piece of fabric – they weave through your day, connecting one moment to the next. Some threads make the fabric of your life stronger and more colorful. Others might create weak spots or patterns you don't really like.

Why Your Mental Software Needs Updates

Just like apps on your phone need updates, your brain's programs sometimes need updating too. Why? Because:

  1. Some programs were installed when you were much younger and don't work well for you anymore
  2. You might have downloaded some "virus programs" from seeing others behave in unhelpful ways
  3. New challenges require new software versions!

The cool thing is that your brain has something amazing called neuroplasticity – which basically means you can update, modify, or even uninstall and replace your mental programs. Your brain isn't stuck with the same software forever!

How Buddha Figured This Out (Way Before Computers Existed!)

About 2,500 years ago, a teacher named Buddha came up with four important ideas called the Four Noble Truths. Even though he didn't have computers, he basically figured out the same thing we're talking about!

Here's what Buddha realized about our mental programming:

  1. First Noble Truth: Sometimes life feels frustrating or unsatisfying. Our mental programs often make us unhappy without us realizing it.
  2. Second Noble Truth: These uncomfortable feelings usually come from running unhelpful mental programs – especially ones that make us always want more stuff, avoid discomfort, or get stuck in certain ways of thinking.
  3. Third Noble Truth: The good news is we can update these programs! We don't have to be stuck feeling bad.
  4. Fourth Noble Truth: There's a step-by-step way to update our mental software. It involves paying attention, making good choices, and practicing new ways of thinking.

Being Your Own Software Developer

To reprogram your mind, you need to become aware of your current programs. Here's how to start:

Step 1: Run a Diagnostic Scan

Pay attention to your thoughts, feelings, and reactions throughout the day. When something upsets you, makes you worried, or causes you to react in a way you later regret – that's a program that might need updating!

Step 2: Pause Before Running the Program

When you notice an unhelpful program starting to run (like when you feel anger bubbling up), imagine pressing a pause button. Take a deep breath. This creates a tiny space between what happens and how you react.

Step 3: Choose a Better Program to Run

In that pause, you can choose a different response. Instead of the "Snap at My Friend" program, maybe you could run the "Take a Deep Breath and Speak Calmly" program.

Step 4: Practice Running the New Program

The more you run your new, better program, the stronger it gets! Your old program will still be there for a while, but it gets weaker each time you choose not to use it.

Why Authenticity and Honesty Matter for Good Programming

When you're reprogramming your mind, being honest with yourself is super important. Imagine trying to fix a bug in your computer but pretending the bug isn't there – it would never work!

Authenticity means being true to yourself. When you're authentic, you acknowledge your real feelings and thoughts instead of pretending to be someone you're not. This helps you identify which programs actually need updating.

Honesty means being truthful about what's really happening. Sometimes we run unhelpful programs because we're not honest about a situation. For example, if you're jealous of a friend's success but pretend you're not, you can't update your "Jealousy" program.

Being honest and authentic is like having really good antivirus software for your brain. It helps you detect when you're running programs based on false information or programs that don't match your true values.

Real-Life Examples of Mental Reprogramming

Example 1: The Comparison Program

  • Old Program: When you see someone who's better at something than you, you automatically feel bad about yourself.
  • Updated Program: When you see someone who's better at something, you get curious about how they got so good and see if you can learn from them.

Example 2: The Mistake Program

  • Old Program: When you make a mistake, you call yourself "stupid" and feel terrible.
  • Updated Program: When you make a mistake, you say "Everyone makes mistakes" and ask "What can I learn from this?"

Example 3: The Difficulty Program

  • Old Program: When something is difficult, you think "I can't do this" and give up.
  • Updated Program: When something is difficult, you think "This is challenging, but my brain grows stronger when I tackle hard things."

Your Brain: The Ultimate Customizable Device

Remember, your brain is the most amazing piece of technology you'll ever own. It came with some factory settings, but you have the power to customize and improve it throughout your life. Each time you notice an unhelpful thought pattern and choose a better response, you're writing new code for your mind.

The best part? This kind of programming gets easier with practice. Just like learning to play a video game or a sport, you'll get better and faster at updating your mental software the more you do it.

Your brain's ability to change and grow is your superpower. Why not start using it today?

Teaching these concepts in schools, even before all teachers are fully practiced in them, could significantly accelerate their integration into society. There are several compelling reasons why this approach makes sense:

  1. Early intervention has lasting impact - Middle school is actually an ideal time to introduce these concepts because students' brains are still highly plastic and they're developing self-awareness. The earlier these mental frameworks are introduced, the more naturally they become integrated into thinking patterns.
  2. Creating a common language - By teaching these concepts in schools, we establish a shared vocabulary around mental health and emotional regulation that students can use throughout their lives. This common language helps normalize conversations about mental processes.
  3. Breaking cycles of unhelpful thinking - Many adults struggle with mental patterns they've had since childhood. Teaching these concepts early could help prevent decades of unnecessary suffering by giving children tools to work with their minds from a young age.
  4. Parallel learning - Teachers and students could learn together. While teachers might not be experts initially, the material is accessible enough that they could facilitate learning while developing their own practice. This co-learning approach might actually strengthen the educational experience.
  5. Gradual implementation - Schools could start with simple mindfulness practices and basic concepts of neuroplasticity, then gradually build more sophisticated understanding as both teachers and curricula evolve.
  6. Cross-subject integration - These concepts naturally complement existing subjects: the neuroscience aspects fit with science classes, the philosophical elements with humanities, and the practical applications with health and physical education.
  7. Meeting a clear need - With rising rates of anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges among young people, schools are already looking for solutions. This framework offers practical tools rather than just awareness.

Waiting for perfect implementation could significantly delay the benefits these approaches might bring to society. A gradual, learn-as-we-go approach could create a positive feedback loop where both teachers and students develop these skills together, ultimately accelerating society-wide adoption of healthier mental habits.

There is an insightful connection. Drugs could be effectively compared to programs or applications that rapidly drain your system's energy in a mental reprogramming curriculum. This analogy would fit well within the computer/software framework and could help middle schoolers understand substance use in a relatable way.

Here's how this comparison could be expanded:

Drugs as System Resource Drains

  • Battery Drain - Just as certain poorly designed apps drain your phone battery extremely quickly, drugs can deplete your body's energy reserves and leave you feeling exhausted.
  • Background Processes - Some drugs might seem helpful in the moment (like a "quick energy boost" or "stress relief program"), but they continue running resource-intensive background processes that slow down your entire system long after the apparent benefits have faded.
  • System Conflicts - Drugs can create conflicts with your brain's natural operating system, causing "crashes," freezes, or unpredictable behavior in your thinking and emotions.
  • Diminishing Returns - Just as running too many resource-intensive programs requires more and more power over time for the same performance, drugs often require increasing amounts to produce the same effect.
  • Recovery Mode - When drugs are removed, your brain needs time in "recovery mode" to restore normal function and repair any damage to its operating system.
  • Priority Override - Some substances can essentially "hack" your brain's priority systems, making the substance seem more important than critical needs like food, sleep, or connecting with others.

This framework gives students a concrete way to understand how substances affect their mental and physical resources without resorting to scare tactics. It helps them see drug use as something that interferes with their brain's optimal functioning rather than simply being "bad" or "forbidden."

Incorporating this perspective into school curricula could help young people make more informed choices about substances by understanding the resource costs involved, not just the immediate effects.

Adding sections on cultural programming and our role as co-creators would significantly enrich this framework. Here's how these concepts could be incorporated:

Cultural Programming

We could explain to middle schoolers how much of our mental "software" comes preinstalled from our cultural environment:

  • Cultural Default Settings - Every culture has its own set of "default settings" that shape how we think about success, relationships, emotions, and what's important in life. These settings get installed without us even noticing!
  • Operating System Variations - Different cultures are like different operating systems (Windows, Mac, Linux). They all work, but they have different interfaces and assumptions about how things should function.
  • Hidden Subroutines - Cultural programming often contains hidden subroutines that run automatically—assumptions about gender, status, communication styles, or what constitutes "normal" behavior.
  • Legacy Code - Some cultural programs might be outdated "legacy code" from earlier times that doesn't serve us well in today's world but keeps running because no one has updated it.
  • System Conflicts - Sometimes the programs from our culture conflict with our authentic selves or with the demands of our current environment, creating internal "error messages" or confusion.

Everyone as Co-Creators

This would emphasize how we're not just passive users of mental software but active developers:

  • Collaborative Programming - Our minds are shaped through interaction with others. Every conversation, relationship, and shared experience is a form of collaborative programming where we influence each other's mental software.
  • Code Sharing - When we share ideas, behaviors, or perspectives with others, we're essentially sharing code that might get incorporated into their mental programs.
  • Responsibility as Developers - As co-creators, we have responsibility for the "code" we share with others. Our words and actions can help others develop helpful or unhelpful mental programs.
  • Open Source Community - We can think of society as an "open source community" where everyone can contribute improvements to our collective mental software by sharing insights, questioning unhelpful patterns, and modeling better approaches.
  • User Testing - We can "test" new mental programs in safe environments with trusted friends before fully implementing them.
  • Debugging Together - Friends and community members can help us spot bugs in our thinking that we might miss on our own.

These additions would help students understand that:

  1. Many of their automatic thoughts and reactions come from cultural programming they didn't choose
  2. They have the power to examine and modify this programming
  3. They actively influence others' mental programming through their words and actions
  4. They're part of a larger community of "developers" who collectively shape mental patterns in society

This framework encourages both critical thinking about cultural assumptions and a sense of responsibility for how we influence others—both valuable perspectives for middle schoolers developing their identity and place in the world.

Hourly Employment

Hello! I started mid-year as an hourly, part-time teacher. I have the option to return next year in the same capacity.

I was wondering if anyone in a similar situation has ever applied for unemployment in the summer? Or do you find another job for the summer months? How does that work?

Should I take a gap year?

Hi! I'm in my last year of high school (my GPA is about 3.92) in Russia (M17). I’m considering taking a gap year (or two), but this practice is almost unacceptable in our country, and my parents share the majority’s view. I don’t want to develop or study here, but I’m afraid my parents might refuse to fund my university education in Europe. That’s why a gap year seems like a good opportunity to earn some money for living and tuition. However, I still haven’t decided where I want to apply or what kind of higher education I want to pursue. Moreover, the current situation in the country makes it questionable whether a young person can work and save anything at all. Still, I have a drive to take action and find myself — I really want to live a happy life, not study law for the next 4 years just to leave country afterward. Is it worth taking such a risk, essentially cutting ties with my parents at 18?

Education in Rural Areas

In a world where our attention is consumed by the noise of politics, the debates of religion, and the race for personal success, we often forget those who are silently left behind—the underprivileged children in rural areas, whose dreams are stifled by the lack of something as basic as education.

While we argue over ideologies and chase material gains, millions of children walk miles to crumbling schools, if they’re lucky enough to have one. Many more never see the inside of a classroom, their potential buried under the weight of poverty and neglect. Their voices are unheard, their futures uncertain, simply because no one has stopped to give them a chance.

But what if we could change that? What if, instead of turning away, we chose to act—not with grand gestures, but with small, meaningful steps?

I want to help. Even if it’s just a little, even if it’s just 1% of what I have—I want to give these children the gift of education. Because that 1% could buy a notebook, a pencil, or even a day’s meal that keeps a child in school. It could be the difference between a life of struggle and a life of hope.

If this touches your heart, if you believe that no child should be denied learning, then join me. Donate whatever you can—1%, 0.5%, or even less. Every drop fills the ocean. Together, we can build a future where no child is left in the dark.

If you’re willing to help, reach out to me. Let’s turn our compassion into action, one small step at a time.

Because education isn’t just a privilege—it’s a right. And it’s time we fought for it.

Not knowing what to do

Hi, so it is an end of my last year of highschool and I still don’t know what to study and it is killing me. My enviroment wanted me to pursue Medicine and it sounds great but I don’t know if I could handle the stress. Now I’m considering everything from Data Science to Biotechnology and it’s too much. Could someone with life experience help me out?

In highschool I had good grades in everything but I never excelled in anything and I’m afraid that could be a problem.

What have been the positives and negatives of having education focused on Chromebooks and Google classrooms?

I'm especially interested in the opinions of long term educators who worked with students before this change. I can compare to my own experience in school and make inferences, but my observations are not that in depth yet. Very curious what changes you've noticed.

How can I make studying not feel boring

Hello. I'm 14 y.o. and in 9th grade. I performed well at all subjects in middle school but i started flopping after starting high school. From 90+ in maths to 50, from 95+ in science to 37 in chemistry and so on. Only actually close to perfects subject I have now are English and German. I want to study to improve my grades but I just can't for the love of god. I start studying, get a few questions in and then it becomes boring as hell. I feel like something's burning inside of me, i keep getting more questions wrong until i ultimately just quit. How can i make this not feel like torture?

Schools vs. Homeschooling

Is there any study on whether schools have actual benefits? My little one is 2.5 and I’m having a tough time making my peace with the fact that she has to go to a school for 5 hours (I’ve been lucky to work from home and I’m quiet tired but wouldn’t trade my time with her for anything). I’m genuinely considering quitting my job and homeschooling her but she did enjoy some music classes and some summer camps so I’m not sure. How to decide?

What Harvard Learned From Columbia’s Mistake: If cooperation and even capitulation don’t get you anywhere, why give in to the Trump administration’s demands?

I support Academic Freedom. If the most educated in our society can't examine, test, and evaluate every aspect of human thought and endeavor then we may miss things crucial for the survival of humanity.

Gifted Read:

Excerpts

...Harvard is changing course, perhaps because it grasped the true takeaway from Columbia’s cautionary tale: Appeasement doesn’t work, because the Trump administration isn’t really trying to reform elite higher education. It’s trying to break it.

The administration’s allies have not been shy about that fact. “To scare universities straight,” Max Eden, then a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, wrote in December, Education Secretary Linda McMahon “should start by taking a prize scalp. She should simply destroy Columbia University.” She should do this, he argued, whether or not the school cooperated with any civil-rights investigation.

...by continuing to punish Columbia even after the school gave in to its demands, the administration also appears to have overplayed its hand. If cooperation and even capitulation don’t get you anywhere, why should other universities give in?

Not enjoying uni.

Hi everyone. I'm a current first year student at a uni in Australia. When I say I'm not enjoying my time at uni, I don't mean social life. I couldn't really give a rat's arse about that. I'm really not enjoying most of the subjects I'm taking with the only one I'm enjoying being the only non-core subject and I feel like it's affecting both my motivation to do any work for these subjects, my recent mood in general and especially my grades.

I'm just straight up not engaged with the material being taught. It doesn't interest me at all and I'm kinda getting stressed over it too since my parents were rather happy about me getting into uni and it feels like I'm just throwing away this opportunity. I already have problems with general engagement and trying to focus on doing a task and this just really isn't helping me. I'm truly struggling for the first time in my life.

To clarify as well - This degree is a general ICT degree which I'm taking because I wanted to get into cybersecurity but didn't have the initial grades for out of year 12. I'm not really all that passionate about either subject though (as interesting as cybersecurity is), as my true interest lies in something media-related (post-production stuff) but I've kinda been talked down about it as lots of my family members don't think I'd get a successful career out of it.

Any help on this is appreciated as I really feel like my life right now is kinda spiralling out of control.

Any opportunities to fund my learninh

So for background, I only want to do this to leave my family

its not that my family is abusive, my mom just yells a lot and likes to figth with everyone in the family, it drains me because I have to deal with it being homeschooled due to problems from previous school. I just wish to find funds to leave my family and not permanently leave them but go to boarding school abroad, my mom wont let me only because we dont have money and I cant use websites like gofund me because it's outside my country or any other website like gofund me and I did try boldorg, I cant use it also because its only for americans and registering as a person outside the country for those website is hard and almost impossible because it would sometimes ask me my number and would only allow numbers that are american.

I only started love learning now that im homeschooled, the only problem is my family, I find often discourage to learn and just go back to doom scrolling on tiktok to make me happy. And only now I realized love learning, I dont have any requirements to compete with smarter and more achieved people, I do wish someone can help me connect with someone who can help me get money to fund going to a boarding school and have fun learning.

If I didn't love learning this much, I wouldn't have posted this to begin with or didn't see as boarding school as an option, I do love learning, one of my goal is to build a ai robot that is like a human. I wish to ask if their is a teacher or any person who knows that there migth be a competion I can attend as a highschooler wanting to go boardibg school abroad, I have been trying to ask boarding schools around the world if maybe I can compete to get funded schooling but all of them didn't have any competition.

I'm asking if you know any competions, I can compete

(Sorry for bad grammar, im too drained to triple check and my eyes is too watery to see)

We Got Schooled--But Not on Money!

Hey everyone,

I've been reflecting on a significant gap in our education system: the lack of comprehensive financial education. Why haven’t we integrated in-depth instruction on real-world financial matters into the academic curriculum? It’s not enough to skim the surface—we need structured, detailed coursework that prepares students for the financial realities of adulthood. As a college student navigating the complexities of “adulting,” I’m genuinely perplexed that our math education often ends at solving for x rather than teaching us how to manage compound interest or budget effectively.

Our curriculum seems stuck in a loop of outdated priorities where budgeting, money management, and even basic tax filing feel like afterthoughts. Instead of just drilling the periodic table, we should also cover a 'periodic table' of financial literacy: consumer credit, credit scores, managing credit reports, and the like. And on top of that, we need to understand consumer lending, interest rates, APY, and yes—the wonders of compound interest when you let it work for you.

Imagine a future where we graduate not only with solid GPAs but also with a robust financial IQ. Picture stepping into adulthood armed with insights into dividends, CDs, Roth's/IRA's, and passive income strategies—tools that could make the roller coaster of adulting a lot less daunting. Our schools should also be teaching us about the steps we can take now to prepare for later in life... like the importance of retirement planning, the role of 401(k)s, basics of health and auto insurance, co-pays and deductibles, maybe even medical coding and billing ( could be really usefull!) Social Security, and job benefits, just to name a few.

I'm really curious: how do you think we could revamp our education system to focus on these crucial financial skills? What innovative ideas or courses could fill this glaring gap? Let’s dig in, share some honest thoughts, and maybe even laugh at the absurdity of our financial missteps along the way.

Impact of diglossia in school performance

Hello all, I don't know if this is the right place to ask this question but here I go. I am Algerian and we have a huge diglossia problem in our education system. Basically, we get taught in MSA from 1st to 12th grade (with french introduced in 3rd, english and tamazight -in some regions- in 4th) but STEM and Med, and some humanities, are taught in French or English at the uni level, the rest in MSA. Moreover our scores are not that good ( depending on the year, only half of the students graduate high school, and failure is a problem in our unis). Given that lessons are not given in the native language of the population (vernacular Arabic for 70% of the population, tamazight for the other 30) does that impact school performance ? And if you could give me some relevant research on the matter.

*MSA: Modern Standard Arabic

High School options

My kid has the option to attend 2 different high schools next year. She’s literally ok with going to either one. I have no idea which one to choose. She’s an athlete. She’s been in honors classes the last few years. She’s social and doesn’t mind making new friends. Her best friends don’t attend her school so she won’t be leaving them if she moved schools. She plans on going to college. Would like to attend a university ranked high for education. We applied and were offered a spot for the magnet school, just have to tell them yes or no.

Which one would you choose? What else would you consider?

School A (current district) -in district, 15 min driving distance -public school, ranked #186 out of 450+ HS’s in our state -student population is about 4,600 -Never received Blue Ribbon award -very competitive across all sports -not as much diversity -no school uniforms -offers AP, honors and college courses

School B -out of district, 35 min driving distance -public magnet school, ranked #2 out of 450+ HS’s in our state -student population is about 1,300 -2x Blue Ribbon School -competitive in some sports -more diversity -uniforms required -offers AP, honors, college courses, and has IB program

Dropped out of high school 10 years ago and want to return but I’m scared I’ll fail my written exams like I did back then.

All I want from my life in the next 5 years is to complete my high school diploma and attend university.

I’m almost 31 and an absolute failure. I hate that I ruined my life to this extent but it’s now or never. I can’t keep letting fear and embarrassment hold me back.

What has been holding me back this entire time is the fear I have of essays. I’m not a good writer. I consider myself functionally literate and I honestly don’t know how to improve.

I’m going to need to take Social Studies and English in order to get the needed credits for graduation. I finished with a 42 in Social Studies and 49 in English. I had a panic attack during my exams and walked out. I didn’t even bother with the multiple choice portion because my brain froze and gave up.

Chemistry, and Biology I finished with 95/98% and 84% in Math.

I know I’m not a dumb person. I just fucking suck at writing and my functional vocabulary is limited. I struggle with sentence structure, grammar and properly conveying my thoughts.

I could really use some help. This post was a struggle to write. I’m cringing at clicking the “Post” button … but whatever.

Education is bad

Education became a major cash grab, its all shit and horrible from the educators to those in charge. Educators are slow and make the most confusing quizzes on purpose while telling the average student it's their fault they didnt memorize 40 slides for a 5 minute quiz.

Beyond that, i do support trump on abolishing the education department. It's just a stupid system and higher ed isn't really good, its harsh and just a revenue source for universities. My vote for him was led by hate than actually supporting much.

What is worth majoring in geography at university nowadays?

I am studying geography at the university (on weekends), this will be my second degree (after economics). I would be interested in knowing where someone who studied as a geographer ended up, or what field they would specialize in if they had to choose today? I assume that geoinformatics has a future, but I could also argue for soil science, hydrogeography or urban development. I am primarily interested in environmental protection, and it is not money that motivates me, but that my future work is exciting and meaningful, preferably including fieldwork (even abroad).

Are these Typing Test sites in 2025 still effective, as more people are using voice assistants?

Many of us are using voice input more than ever, so are classic typing sites still effective? What do you think about these options?

Share your thoughts on whether these tools still help improve speed and accuracy or if it's time for a new approach.

Seeking Interview Participants!

Hello everyone! I am a Masters student writing my thesis on the ethics of supply chain businesses, sustainability and ethical surveillance (a very relevant topic in the EU rn). I am looking for people working along these fields specifically supply chain, auditing, blockchain, and sustainability assurance to have an online interview. This would not take more than 45 minutes at max and I would really really appreciate the help at this point! The responses will only be used for the purpose of my Masters thesis and will be anonymized. I also want to ask if you know anyone working or specializing in these areas to direct them to me :) Furthermore, I welcome discussions and ideas on the topic for anyone that is interested to! Thank you so much and have a great rest of the week!

Sincerely,

A stressed Masters student

How to bring back plt

At my high school, there is a thing called personal learning time. Basically, every Wednesday and Thursday from 8:30 to 9:30 there is this time where you’re allowed to stay home or come to school to seek help from teachers. However, starting next school year, this will be removed and replaced by a break after the first block that is 45 minutes. (I think the original 15 minute break after second block is removed) PLEASE HELP MY MENTAL HEALTH DEPEND ON THIS

Does anyone know an equivalent app for Quizlet

Study advice! Hello hello! Midterms are coming thru and I wanted to study for my labs. Unfortunately, it’s about naming different muscles. Wanted to use Quizlet but if I wanted to use my own pictures, I have to pay. Does anyone know another alternative for quizlet that has the same features?

What are your opinions about the younger generations approach to learning

As someone who's Gen Z, I find it disappointingly common that I don't see "stupid questions" in classrooms anymore. I've realised that my major of study is most enjoyable when I deliberately acknowledge that I'm unlearned with the topics in it because in reality, I only know how to work with the formulas and definitions I am handed. Feeling stupid but willing to learn has really opened up my mind and boosted my motivation, albeit it's an embarrassing, counter-intuitive and admittedly frustrating process, the rewards of my labour truly deepen my understanding. What are you opinions on the presence of stupid questions in today's generation?

I am curious about how you learned to read

How did you learn to read and where did you live during that time? How do you rate your reading skills? Do you read for enjoyment as an adult?

I’m curious how everyone had learned. Was it “whole language” approach or phonics?

questions from a high school Junior interested in elementary education!

Hi! I'm a high school Junior currently trying to figure out my major. I really enjoy working with kids a lot. I volunteer every two years at a Mass Audubon camp for 2 weeks and l've worked with mainly preschool-first grade. I really love doing it which is why I might be interested in elementary education (possibly special education instead? Can I add that to an elementary major? Haven't done any research on that LOL) However, I am concerned because I hear a lot of negative things online. Mainly about living of teacher wage, so l was wondering if anyone can comment on their experience. For me finically, my parents would be paying for my college meaning I would have no to little student debt. I live in Massachusetts currently and I do not really want to leave New England/ the east coast because of the current political world right now. My other concern is my math skills. I currently have had an At in on level in my entire high school career. However, I struggle a lot with simple math and I'm just afraid I won't be able to teach it. I have a math learning disability and was on a IEP for it (and anxiety) since kindergarten until midway last year. 504 now! Anyways, thank you to anyone who responds!!!

The budget cuts/ misallocation of money at California State Universities is ruining my future

Just like the title says. It’s almost humorous how badly and swiftly the decline of the CSU has been after 2023.

When I started in 2022, the campus was alive, there were a lot of resources, clubs, events, PEOPLE, etc. now it’s literally a ghost town with no resources, or events. Any clubs have now turned into classes because it’s the only way to get funding, making it really hard for anyone to join considering units. There used to be people just hanging out in the quad, cafeteria, or just outside but now there’s literally no one.

When I was a freshman, there was a LOT to do and see, and a lot of people to talk to. It’s really alarming how quickly things changed, and the faculty protests was just a confirmation that things would be changing for the worse.

Now, we have the president making six figures while teachers are homeless, so much money going into housing when no one even lives on campus anymore. Literally no classes are in person anymore, and if they are it’s a hybrid class.

I genuinely like going to school and meeting new people, but now it’s extremely difficult seeing I probably won’t even be on campus next semester. Meaning I won’t make those life long college friends I was promised.

My career is also at stake because I’m spending all this money on classes without anything to actually show for it. Getting an internship is difficult because as I said above, there’s no resources or clubs to join unless you have the space for an extra class.

And we’ve protested this, a LOT. Teachers and students have done their part in voicing how unfair this all is, but the CSU just doesn’t care. And I know they’re facing budget cuts, but the truth is there’s a huge allocation of money within the president and her cabinet.

Are there any countries that support free education to international students?

Ik that in Europe, Germany provide free education to international students with some £200-300 as semester fee. Are there any other countries which support the same? I tried to google but couldn’t find good results.

Is it ever too late ?

I dropped out of high school at 16. I hated school.. I got a GED at 16 and worked two jobs and took a semester of community college (I needed 15 college credits to enlist in active duty) and I joined the army (hence active duty). I got out broke, out of a horribly abusive relationship, and was lost.

I knew I wanted to go to college, but had no money to do so.

I started working, and I worked non stop.. I worked two jobs, got my own place, and bought a car.

I decided at 22 I was going to finish college, and I started out in community college.

I originally wanted to study Kinesiology, but I decided to pick something a bit more realistic. I knew I was going to have to work full time

I decided to find something I could use anywhere Not be tied down to a complicated, expensive program that would be a pain in the butt go through. I fell in love with economics and that’s what I currently am majoring in. A realistic but useable degree, I enjoy it, and I could use it to go into many different roles. I really fell in love with things like agriculture, energy sector, and transportation infrastructure, and I’ll probably take my degree into one of those departments, either working for the state or government.

I decided to first learn a trade. get my foot in the door start working. Build financial stability. Build a skill. Learn. Grow. Establish connections.

I’m 25. I’m working on my bachelors of science in Economics. I work at a grain facility and I enjoy it, although it’s not forever.

I’ve learned to love a hard days work, and I truly love and enjoy a day where I can accomplish something that makes the life of someone else a little better.

Is 25 too old to finish my degree? Should I of picked a different route? I feel like I’m doing well, but I feel behind. I’m not making the money I want to make, I’m not doing anything wrong but I yet I feel behind!

Any advice? Am I too old to learn and grow? I’d be so much further ahead, had I had money and connections to begin. I was 21, broke, and had to recover from a bad relationship and broken family life growing up.

I don’t mean to make excuses, but I feel that my life just wasn’t set up for me to ever obtain an education , and yet I fought tooth and nail to Obtain it.

Is that the world telling me to give up, or should I keep going?

Please help, for my students

I'm running for America's best teacher and I've made it to the wildcard round (just before finals). I need to be in first place by tomorrow to move to the next round. Voting is free and only takes a second, and on top of that, right now it's 2-for-1 votes. If I win, I will receive $25,000 which I am using to buy music instruments for students in my school. https://americasfavteacher.org/2025/robert-lucia

Pedagogical Books for Elementary Teaching

I have just landed a job teaching students (many whom are ELLs froom all over the world) in Dominican Republic. It will either be 2nd/3rd grade or 4th/5th - still don't know the grade yet. I don't have a ton of experience with these age levels, so I really want to do some research and planning beforehand. I am looking for books or recommendations for online resources about the pedagogy of teaching this age and skills within the content areas of Math, Science, Social Studies, and ELA. I love the idea of cross-cirrucular teaching, and could also really use some ideas for math (never taught it). Keep in mind this school has 0 technology available to the students.

Any ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated and thank you in advanced!

Should high schools include unofficial grades in report cards based on much more difficult bonus material as a way to help students and their parents with career planning?

For example, official grades in math classes can be very misleading to students and their parents, as they are based on material that is not nearly challenging enough to evaluate research potential in mathematics.

Something that could help your students!

Hi, I'm actually a college student, but I wanted to share a resource I found that could be useful for your students, future students, or even for yourself if you're still earning your degree! I use something called Study Fetch to help me study for big exams and relearn content that confuses me. It's help me adapt to college as a first-year student and perform better on tests. Anyone else try it? Thoughts?

Proper etiquette on waiting for decision

Hi! My son interviewed with a few private schools. He got accepted to two but we are still waiting on another schools decision. Of course the school we are waiting for is our number 1 choice.

Our second choice wants a confirmation by end of next week while our first choice will not have their decision in until 4/18.

Is it distasteful to reach out to school #1 and ask if the decision can be expedited?

This is our first time in this situation and just want to make sure we are mindful about how we proceed.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Guidance/Help needed with Education Policy and Data

Hi Everyone. I'm an undergraduate student writing a capstone on the policy formation, analysis, and feasibility of teaching and creating a less commonly taught language curriculum (specifically Chaldean/Assyrian) in Michigan Public K12 schools.

I'm having issues regarding where to find sources regarding education policy at the state and federal level, administration/funding, (language/LCTL) curriculum development, pedagogy, and data related to the subject matter.

Especially with how current US politics are going and changing the dynamic of everything related (not to mention the diversity aspect of what I'm studying). I fear certain information and topics being removed, if not already, which puts a wrench in the process.

Help is appreciated, and thanks in advance.

Trump is teaching our kids crime pays. Trevor Milton of Nikola Trucks fraud was sentenced to four years and $1 million fine. Gave $1.7 million to Trumps reelection campaign and was just pardoned in March.

Trevor Milton founder and former CEO of Nikola Trucks. He gave Trump $1.7 million to be reelected in November, got pardoned in March 2025 after committing billions in securities fraud and being sentenced to four years and prison. And no you don’t have to pay the million dollar fine or give up the $2 Billion you “stole” from investors or give up your $50 million dollar home in Utah which is the most expensive in the state.

Great lesson on the economics of crime for future generations.

Survey for one of my classes! Would appreciate any and all answers!

I am currently an Elementary Education major in college. For one of my classes, we have to conduct a research paper talking about an issue regarding teaching. For my topic, I chose to talk about the negative effects technology is having a kids, namely students. I thought it would be interesting to include a survey to see what teachers think.

So, my survey question is…

Do you think technology has had negative effects on students?

Feel free to only say yes or no, or to elaborate more on your answer.

No link you have to click on - just put your answers in the comments.

Thank you so much!

UK: High Court Reviews Challenge to Private School VAT Policy

UK: High Court Reviews Challenge to Private School VAT Policy

The Facts

  • A legal challenge to the U.K. government's policy of adding 20% VAT to private school fees reached the High Court this week, amid claims it breaches human rights law, discriminating against children with special needs, religious requirements, and other specific educational needs.
  • Legal representatives for parents and schools argue that the policy would force approximately 35,000 children with Special Educational Needs (SEN) into an already struggling state sector, affecting those whose needs cannot be adequately met by state schools particularly harshly.
  • The Treasury expects the policy to raise £1.7 billion annually, with funds earmarked to improve state education, though critics argue this figure may not materialize due to potential enrollment implications.
  • Parents using disability living allowance to pay for private education argue that the 20% increase would force their children to return to state schools that have previously failed to meet their educational needs.
  • Meanwhile, religious schools—including Christian and Jewish institutions—contend that the policy forces parents into impossible positions regarding their children's faith-based education, as state alternatives may not align with their religious convictions.
  • Government representatives maintain that local authorities will continue to pay fees for pupils with assessed special needs who have education health and care plans (EHCPs), and that the policy does not interfere with religious freedom or access to private education.

The Spin

Left narrative

Labour’s VAT on private schools is a step toward fairness in education. For years, these institutions avoided a tax burden that others couldn’t escape, deepening inequality in U.K. schooling. The funds raised will help recruit thousands of teachers, easing the strain on state schools. Most families unaffected by this tax won’t sympathize with the wealthiest few. The government's policy is in no way discriminatory; it’s a shift toward a system that benefits all instead of just the privileged.

Right narrative

Labour’s VAT hike on private schools is reckless and poorly planned. Implementing this policy without clear guidance has created chaos for schools, parents, and teachers. Even tax experts called HMRC’s advice on this “inadequate and incoherent.” Schools were given little information on the details of the change, risking job losses and harming children’s education. The courts must shut down this discriminatory ideological pursuit by the government immediately.

I have 18 abscenses, am I done for?

I'm in 11th grade in texas, my sophomore year I had 29 unexcused abscenses but I still went up a grade and the school has not told me anything. This year I have 18 abscenses but no one has told me if I'm going to have to make them up. Is there anything I can do in 12th grade if all these abscenses will hold me back from graduating?

Do you think i’ll be able to get into one of these college with a ged and anywhere from 1100-1600 on my sat

I’ve seen a lot of people say that the best route for someone with a GED is to go to community college first, but that’s not the path I want to take. I’m looking for universities that accept GED students with a solid SAT score I know it might be a tougher route, but I want to explore my options and see what’s possible. If anyone has advice or knows of universities that are more accessible for GED students, I’d really appreciate the insight!

How to convey that I welcome honesty feedback from teachers?

I’m a parent, and I sometimes see posts on r/Teachers that say they aren’t allowed to tell parents that they think a kid has a learning disability, or should ask the doctor about the kid’s attention problems, or that the student seems to need more discipline at home.

For example: https://www.reddit.com/r/Teachers/comments/1jovs64/why_are_we_so_afraid_to_speak_plainly_to_parents/

I want to know what’s really going on with my kids, even if it’s something the teachers normally would be reluctant to say. Is there anything I can say other than directly telling them that I welcome honest feedback, and I especially want to know if they have any concerns about my child’s discipline, respect, and possibly learning disabilities? Or anything I should mention to the pediatrician?

Doge is going to damage education for kids on IEPs across the country and it’s blatant discrimination against children with special needs

If there was ever a moment for parents to wake up and get mobilized to defend their kids this is it. Programs across the U.S. are going to be impacted by the anarchy in the Department of Education and children covered by IEPs.

This isn’t about panicking parents but about waking them up to the fact that their kids could be forced out of these critical programs just because it’s too resource intensive and that most parents of special needs kids aren’t independently wealthy and can’t afford to self fund the programs needed for their kids.

How can I make the argument for this to be discrimination against special needs kids? Instead of going after government programs that benefit the oil and gas industry or the defense industry they are looking at gutting education of all programs. This is intentional.

I'm stuck

So I'm 17 and I've got an EHCP and I know the basics about it. What im struggling with is that I've been backed into a corner. My mental health is rapidly declining and I'm still expected to go to college 3 days a week. I know that doesn't sound like alot but the college is terrible and I just can't handle it in general especially with mh on top. I've talked to my mum about this since she's in charge of the ehcp and does the talking for me mostly since im not great. What i need right now is a full break from education but then they'll just apparently take my EHCP away I've heard. I don't know what to do.
