I have the unfortunate 7–10 split where I would really like to study both of these, but unfortunately, they have jack shit to do with each other. Literally one could not exist and the other would have no idea. I know engineering is already exceedingly hard to double major with anything else already, but I’m really not sure what cognitive science entails as far as courseload.
In about a year I am going to start college and I don't know which one of the two courses I should take. So what are the similarities and differences?
As a student who can see the need for a college education in this job market I’ve been worried about student loans. I would love for college to be free and have the government spend less on the military. I was wondering about educators opinions on this matter.

Hey Reddit, Im currently one year through college and I just wanted to ask. Is getting your associates in science so that you can transfer to a 4 year university worth it? From what everyone's told me, if I get my associates of Science at a 2 year then I wont have to worry about my prereqs in university and can focus on my degree plan. Is this true? Is this worth it? Should I have just gone straight to a 4 year? And does anyone have experience with this?
I'm looking for a good way to learn French by myself since I will have a lot of free time now that there are summer holidays.
I usually prefer to be taught by a teacher because I'm not very good at self-learning and I did in fact start learning with a teacher, I've had a total of 10 lessons, 45 minutes each (so I know the very basics), but I wasn't that satisfied with those and in addition to that, the place I was going to doesn't offer lessons during holidays and there's kind of a lack of French teachers that are known to be good so I'm a little bit scared of putting money and time into something that won't work anyways. Even if I found a teacher, I would still appreciate some tips and tricks because I'd want to study regardless of the lessons I'd attend.
I'd like to find a way different than just learning from regular textbooks since I attended German at school and that way of learning without other things to support it didn't get me anywhere and I started actually hating the language and lost all motivation. On the other hand, I learned English kind of "naturally" and I'm looking for a way to maybe try and do a similar thing with French but I have no clue how to start.
In terms of other perhaps useful information, spending money on learning aids is not a problem whatsoever, I have a French-speaking friend with whom I can most likely talk a little bit to improve speaking skills but I need to learn more basics first (and it's sometimes a little awkward to do things like these with a friend that is the same age) and I'm living in Poland so pointing me towards very specific books and whatnot may not be a very good idea since they may not be accessible.
tl;dr: I have a lot of free time, don't have a teacher, need suggestions for effective learning of French
(btw. I won't be able to answer questions and suggestions for quite a while because it's very late here, but I'm posting this now to get to people in NA, hope that isn't a big problem)

The Pre matric scholarship form is only available online on the government scholarship portal. Students are required to register on the portal with their details. Specifically asking about the entry requirements regarding grades. I'm from another country with an undergraduate degree. Some universities say they have entry requirements based on your grades in your undergrad years.. like this for example " with a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of at least 65% in the best 50 points in appropriate discipline studies at third year. " How does that work if I didn't study undegrad in aus and basically have a different grading system for my grades from my country? Is there some sort of exam I can take?
I'd like to note due to fucking around and depression in my early years my GPA is pretty shit and my applications would be less than impressive if that is all I have to offer..is there any standardized tests (science related, I have a bachelors of science in biology) I can take to show that those grades aren't an accurate reflection of my current capabilities?
First of all, yes I gotta vent a bit.
I study in the netherlands (bachelor) and had an internship for the past 6 months. Everything went right: teachers gave feedback and seemed satisfied, colleagues gave an advice score of 9/10 and I engineered my ass off to make a beautiful product.
The result: didnt pass due to not enough research documented. The feedback was good everytime but this small detail was lacking for the jury. This will cost me 6 months and an entire year of school fees while the school offers nothing. Im this close to having a diploma and finally earning a living but I feel like I just got shafted and there was little I could do.
It's clear to me that school is just for a paper and what you learn is hardly needed in the real world. Every company would love to have a hard working employee like myself but Im forced to abide by the logicless rules from the education system and spent another fortune and time so I can get a fine loan.
Doing everything by the book is fine and all but if the book is dated I see no point in this system. Another discussion I love to have is how you get pushed in doings things like school expects which hinders all creative spirit, but that another thing.
Tl;dr education is not preparring people for the real world, even internships have pointless rules so schools can grade you. (and they expect you to figure these rules out by yourself)
Sry for writing an unstructured wall of text but its mostly to vent a bit. Still think its a discussion and problem many educational systems should think about/deal with.

I am 17 y.o, currently going from second year to third year of high school (sorry, I do not quite understand the grading system in US or similar one). First, my last semester went horribly wrong, because of some family and economic things which caused a huge impact in my personal life, causing my grade to drop so low. Usually I get A's and B's with only 2-3 C's in my grade, but this time i only get 3 A's with maybe 5 B's and C fills the rest. This huge drop adds more pressure in my earlier problem, and I really can't move on from that. Maybe some peoples say that grade means nothing, but it's not true for me because I'm looking for college scholarship, and in my country, one of the best way to get scholarship is from your first until last semester's grade.
So, this is the end semester holiday and I'm planning to do some preparation for the next semester (and my redemption too), but I still can't get motivated enough because of the failure feeling. Is there anything I can do?
Also, I study in a state school, and my particular school is not even a good one, like the teacher don't teach properly and only the one with additional tutoring outside school passed that teacher's subject, lack of facility, and the average annual score of national exam is 4.8/10. I came from an A school standard (annual average 8/10) to this school because of the distance from my home because my family thought that it's easier to go to school if it's closer, and that is a huge mistake of my life and it is unchangeable. I even felt like my learning standard dropped, I cant even do my friend's homework from my previous school. Thus, this add more and more pressure every time I wake up to go to school. Can't escape to any other school, because economic factor. I understand that I took a part of this mess, I don't completely blame my situation, but I feel like I can't really keep going. Like no matter if I reach the 1st place in my entire school, some good university scholarship is still going to choose the 1st place in other better school. So, even with this kind of situation, what should I do to efficiently fix my next semester and maybe ace it? Any reply will be appreciated! Thank you.
TL:DR a student messed up his grade so much with some personal problem while feeling hes not on the right school and situation, trying to figure out something to fix the problem and want to do it from current holiday session to the upcoming (last) semester.
This year was really rough for me,family issues and drug ODs plagued my school year and I ended up being retained. I got myself back on the right track in the last quarter and I didn’t fail every class. Is there anyway to prove that I can be moved on? I’m an AP student who normally has A’s and B’s and I feel that this was just a really rough patch for me.

So recently, I dropped out of my college for reasons that included travel, distance and just ease of access. I was studying a BTEC in Level 3 sport, and found it challenging but had distinctions in almost all assignments, with a few merits.
So the other day, I held an interview with another college looking to do the same course, just this one was closer and easier to get to. The interviewer asked to see my GCSE results (got 9 GCSE's A*- C and the numerical equivalent) and upon seeing how well I done, recommended an OCR over a BTEC for more acidemical students - which I was fine with.
Just then, I just got off the phone with my previous college to explain the situation, and the head of the course said that an OCR course is for students who struggle acidemicaly - can someone tell me what the difference is between a BTEC and an OCR and what i would be better off with as I can't find anything on Google? Thanks in advance.
Would just like to k ow why everyone thinks about going to a night school or college for qualifications, I work in a factory currently and just think I have more potential, is this a good way of finding a better career or are there alternatives
I remember talking to my old first grade teacher about how now they can't even do the "walk*" or give out numbers* or something, which I recall doing back when I was in first grade. Instead she said they could only do positive reinforcement which while positive reinforcement is usually ok I don't see what's bad about walking around a bench for like the whole recess. Ofc, at that age it's bad, but looking back it wasn't so bad.
Come to think of it, I remember how my first grade teacher's assistant reminded us kids once about how good we had it; when she was young they'd give her such a whooping she couldn't sit down for a week. I added that in because it shows how we've changed over the decades.
*walk-had to do a walk around something like a bench for like half an hour or something. *numbers-this was if we didn't do homework or something we would get a number circled and not be able to participate in fun activities or something.

We have in our society two types of publicly supported institutions whose explicit purpose is education—schools and libraries. How different they are from one another! The primary difference is this: Schools are places of forced education (or forced attempts at education) and libraries are places of voluntary, self-chosen education.
I'm having trouble finding good organizations to donate to. Ideally, I'd like to support research (especially) and implementation of early childhood education/development/welfare programs internationally. I find a number of organizations that seem to be doing cool stuff (American Institutes for Research, High Scope Educational Research Foundation, National Institute for Early Education Research, Annie E. Casey Foundation, Caplan Foundation for Early Childhood), but to my surprise, none of them seem to be asking for any of my money!
I'd much rather rely on organizational-level expertise in spending resources than, say, picking through sites like DonorsChoose for individual projects to support. No offense of course, just not what I'm looking for.
The only decent option I can find so far is good ol' UNICEF. But I'm sure there must be some smaller, totally rad organizations worthy of support.
Can anyone point me in some good directions, please? Would really appreciate it!

I've been thinking about this scenario lately and I'd love to get some perspectives on it:
You're the principal of a large elementary school, and one of the decisions your school faces is what to do with young students who aren't challenged by their class' mathematical work. For example, in your school there is currently a 1st Grader who does math above grade level, e.g. he performs long division in his head. His parents initiated contact with the teacher after hearing their child complain that math at school was boring. They're concerned that he isn't being challenged. The classroom teacher knows that he is above grade-level in math, and is trying to meet his needs in class. The parents, however, do not think the current situation is working. The teacher reports that the student is difficult to engage during math class, and that sometimes he misbehaves during math. As principal, what policy would you want your school to do for someone like this 1st Grader?

I'm trying to put together a report, but I'm having difficulty finding some resources that may be beneficial. My school offers a peer-led study group program for students who are either repeating the course or are in "near-passing" status (40-50% generally). I have found lots of research on how these types of study groups are beneficial for first time students in the course, however, I'm having trouble finding ANYTHING about repeat students.
Even searching for "At-Risk" only brings up articles usually based on the students' financial / minority status.
Has anybody come across any kind of quantitative research papers about repeating students at a College / University level?

I attend a high school in Melbourne, Australia just for context, in case this isn't common anywhere else. Sorry if I'm making basic mistakes, we're not examined on this topic this year so I'm a tad rusty.
In Year 7 I think we learned the order of electrons as 2, 8, 18, 32.
In Year 8 we learned 2, 8, 8, 18 or something strange like that
In Year 9 we learned 2, 8, 18, 8, but the third shell gets stuck at 8 until the fourth shell gets to 8 too or something. I think this is an attempt at simplifying subshells filling in non-intuitive orders?
I have no idea what people get taught in year 10, I skipped that grade
Throughout all of this there's all this weird misnaming with calling shells orbitals and vice versa.
What exactly is the point of all of this? I understand not throwing 12 year olds into the deep end withthe Bohr model, but at least keeping the naming of orbitals vs shells correct would help. In Year 7 they even teach us the correct 2, 8, 18, 32, only to throw that down the drain until Year 11.
This doesn't even seem like an attempt to simplify things, it's just creating pointless confusion. We dedicated a bit of a class in Year 11 chemistry to unlearning all the incorrect info that we got taught before, and I just don't see why this kind of thing has to happen.

I had a bit of a shower thought, since my girlfriend is sick and doesn't want to go to class tonight. Imagine if college lectures set up a camera before the lecture and privately live streamed their lectures for students who are either sick or have some sort of engagement that makes it unreasonable for them to physically be in class. This way you could avoid sick students showing up to class and getting others or even teachers sick.
The only negative I could see is maybe students abusing this and just not showing up to lectures only livestreaming them to and not even paying attention for minimal effort for the class, but at the same time, some restrictions could be made. Maybe students only have X amount of livestreamed lectures they are allowed to watch and if they are really sick with proof for a prolonged period of time they could apply for extensions of this privilege.
I think it would be a pretty effective way of making lextures more accessible. If take to an extreme it could be interesting to have hybrid online/in person courses with recorded lectures that are also in person.
I read an amazing article on wired.com today about how one school has used digitalization to turn its teaching methods around. The effects are amazing. The concerned school is Discovery School in Arlington, Virginia. They use solar power to power the school and the kids learn to explore the system and learn by doing.
The school has to keep its curriculum in line with state requirements while following their own program of digital teaching. They manage to weave them both, seamlessly. This is so innovative and exciting.
There is an urgent need to upgrade the education system. Digitalization will have an enhancing effect on the education of children, giving them a more hands on experience. Chalk and talk is already a thing of the past. Education should be updated, sustainable and use fewer resources. Discovery School seems to have done that.

Let them draft their own kids. I'm only being half-serious here but imagine if you got to select your own students the way sports teams select their players. They look at all sorts of data to try to get the best mix of personnel available to them. Classrooms could be the same way. Of course we wouldn't TELL the kids where they were drafted, but I think that'd be interesting.

The deeper I get into my teaching career the more I think that this is something just about every school should implement. The cries of "taking away creativity" only speaks to the fact that students believe that the only creativity they have can be purchased.
