I have a kid in high school that will be off to college soon and I'm looking at this cauldron from a deeper perspective.
I have 2 best case scenarios right in my immediate family.
Case 1:
- High school education only and then went to a trade school and worked with a plumbing company for 2 years. Left company, opened his own business with one commercial van. In 2 years, he's set up a small business with 3 vans, has 5 people working under him, his wife now runs the admin/office/payroll and he spends more time on vacation than most people. I'd guess with this small business, he's somewhere in the $300k+ net profit. Owns house and drives a Mercedes SUV.
Case 2:
- College degree in medical field (similar to mine). Knee deep in college debt and graduated and did base line externship in a junior role and only paid under $20/hr. Finally got a permanent position as a salesman and now makes $140k a year but still lives in apartment and still paying off college loan. Has long term college girlfriend but they haven't married due to financial reasons and both are not ready yet.
Both of these relative are similar age and went to high school together. One without a degree is living the dream while the other struggling to make ends meet and still paying off college loan.
So why the fuck do people and society always say that kids should goto college to make a better future. To make colleges and our banks richer?
