What do y'all think? I know that in my district, it has been a focus (or laser-focus, as my CS would say) on the standards - with no regard to the actual content. I can't count how many times we have been told that it doesn't matter what the kids read, as long as we focus on the standards -- something I absolutely disagree with. (But in the same breath, we are told what they absolutely have to read, and there is no time to supplement the materials with teacher-curated readings because of our strict curriculum guide.) I'm seeing more and more 9th graders unable to read "on grade-level" because they don't have the background knowledge or vocabulary to navigate the texts.
