Looking for ideas for MS Humanities Summer School lessons

I am part of a summer school team helping incoming sixth graders get the feel for middle school. We are doing rotations each day with each group getting math/science, social studies/ela and team building. As the social studies teacher on the team I'm taking on the SS/ELA class. I've got roughly 45 minutes per class and want to split it up between the two subject but keep them connected. I've been giving free reign to teach what ever I want. I'm wanting to do some short stories and analysis for the ELA time.

What I'm hoping you can help me with is some ideas of some short stories I can use. I have three groups of students I'll be seeing. One is on level, one is above level, and the third is significantly lower, like 2nd/3rd grade reading and writing skills.

Anyone know of some good short stories, especially ones that might have equally short video adaptions that I can show?

So far I've got one I really like: The Fun They Had by Issac Asimov. Its short and I think it will cause discussion and provide some good writing prompts.

Thanks for any help you give!
